Ok, since we need to decide on a way to decide on a book here's a poll. Can this be a short poll? Shall we close in two days?

I took too long adding the poll and now it won't let me. Will a mod add the poll for me?
The selections I was going to put are:
1. If more than ten selections, each person picks top five...Alex does math.
2. Each active member chooses a book for the month on a rotating basis.
3. Limit nominations to one per person per month.

I think I'd feel more comfortable if we could first take an opinion poll on forming a task group to research the issue and report their findings to a blue ribbon panel who will then present the best options to the group for a vote.

I'm going to throw up now.

Don't throw up in front of me. I can't see anyone throw up without hurling myself.
And yes, it probably is a bit ridiculous to have a poll, but I thought that if we could just decide this once and for all then we won't have to have the same discussion every month about how we are going to decide. A stitch in time and all...

Thanks to Traci for setting up the poll. "I am not a committee!"

Isn't that we effectively just did in the preceeding thread?

I picked the 5- book method, but really, I'd only want to rank my top 3 books, my opinions don't get that much granular.

But there was no blue ribbon panel! That's the most important part!

That happend in the super secret blue ribbon panel boards behind the scenes here - you'll just have to trust me on that

I chose the 5 book method partly because that's what we seem to be successfully doing in the other thread already. Besides, it is interesting to see what others pick.

My choice is not on the poll (i.e., enough polls about polls, just pick a book already and then I'll decide if I want to play).

Oh sure, yet another clique activity from which I was excluded.

I don't really like the 5 book method, as I don't really have a top five. I like picking on a rotational basis, as I think that we will read a wider variety of books that way, but I seem to be in the minority.

No one's stopping anyone from reading the other books on the nominations lists (or from the Booker Prize shortlist, or the NYT bestsellers list, or any other list you happen upon).
Anyhow, I don't think this group is in danger of getting into a rut.

The space time continuum is stopping me as I'm a slow enough reader when reading just one book.

Yeah, this is pretty much my thought process - we're pretty informal, so I'm sure many of us will drop in or out as the whim catches us. I intend to start thread on books I read that don't make the list if it moves me in particular, but I think voting at least ensure a larger number of people will actually read and participate in the ensuing discussion (or at least watch the movie). And if it turns out that this gets monopolized by a particular genre, we can always reinvent ourselves when enough of us get bored.

So is there going to be a new thread to list all of the nominees where we will pick our five? You can set up a poll to allow multiple selections, but it won't weight the responses.
I need to read my nominee anyway before October.
