California-based Diedrich Coffee has agreed to sell most of its company-owned stores to Starbucks Corporation for approximately $13.5 million in order to focus on its wholesale business.

The move will see Starbucks acquire 47 Diedrich Coffee and Coffee People outlets, although Diedrich will retain the brands for its wholesale and franchise operations, including Gloria Jean's Coffees.

Sad, but not surprising.

Starbucks is opening a shop in my breakfast nook.

Just one? Doesn't your breakfast nook have four corners?

Hmmm as a wholesaler, I wonder who they will be providing their beans to

Good riddance. I've been very disappointed with Deidrich's over the last few years, which saddens me because I used to adore their coffee. They are pretty far removed from the quality they used to provide though, both in the taste of the coffee and in their service.

Luckily, Peets has filled the void for me.

Damn. This means there'll probably be ANOTHER Starbucks in the Plaza of downtown Orange.

One detail: this change only affects the COMPANY owned stores. Franchisee owned stores are not affected. I tried to find info about how many/which of the stores are franchisee or company owned and was unable to locate such info.

There is a longer story here (http://www.corporate-ir.net/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?ticker=ddrx&script=410&layout=-6&item_id=905662) (from the Diedrichs web site).

BTW: I was unaware that Diedrichs owned Gloria Jeans brand as well. That is where I had my first candy coffee (a mocha) many moons ago.

Thank GOD Martin Diedrich has opened his own store. I wish for continued expansion on his part and that he NEVER accepts another corporate buyout - EVER.
