Probably not, if P.L. Travers had her way. Here's an interesting article (http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/books/10/17/books.poppinsauthor.ap/index.html).

Frosting can make any cake look good from the outside. When one cuts into it...

We talk about that with software all the time. You can frost a meatloaf, but it's still not a cake.
Still. I like the frosted Mary Poppins

It was Walt's dream to have a musical based on the Poppins characters. But if you researched through all of the books, you wouldn't find a plot," Sherman told The Associated Press.
Disney aimed to portray a mother fighting for a cause (women's suffrage) and a father so busy at the bank that he had no time for his children. Enter Mary Poppins.
"That was our curve, our arc," Sherman said. "Travers didn't know what we were talking about. She claimed we were butchering her story. She would listen to the songs but had nothing nice to say about them.
Hehe. She's an idiot. Sherman is right, there isn't a wisp of a story in the series and it makes no sense. Mary comes, Mary causes mischief and is a b.tch about it, Mary disappears, Mary comes back in the next book. Disney turned the mess into a fantastic movie. Feh on Travers. :p

Meatloaf again??:D
Sounds to me like that negitive little woman was Mary from her books, and she was only made rich because of Walt Disney. Her books probably never would have made it to the second printing I bet.
