Today is National Bologna Day!

Of course, this does not look terribly appealing, so, perhaps not.

My Bologna

Ooh, my little hungry one, hungry one
Open up a package of my bologna
Ooh, I think the toast is done, the toast is done
Top it with a little of my bologna

Never gonna stop, eat it up
Such a tasty snack I always eat too much, then throw up
But I'll soon be back for my, my, my, yi, yi, woo
M-m-m-my bologna

Spreadin' on the mustard now, show me how
Spread it on a litle of this bologna
Hopin' that we don't run out, don't run out
If we do I'm sure that I'll miss bologna

Never gonna stop, eat it up
Such a tasty snack I always eat too much, then throw up
But I'll soon be back for my, my, my, yi, yi, woo
M-m-m-my bologna
M-m-m-my bologna

(belch)

Goin' to the market now, market now
I'm the city's biggest bologna buyer
Walkin' down the shopping isles, shopping isles
Filling up my basket with Oscar Meyer

Never gonna stop, eat it up
Such a tasty snack I always eat too much, then throw up
But I'll soon be back for my, my, my, yi, yi, woo
M-m-m-m-m-m-m-my, my, my, yi, yi, woo
M-m-m-my bologna
M-m-m-my bologna
M-m-m-my bologna
M-m-m-my bologna

no lie! that looks to be about as dry a lunch as I could imagine!
little mayo and some french's yellow would be a huge help to that puppy.
maybe some tomato soup to go with?

It's not just me! :D I could really go for some fried bologna right now. (the chicken and lentils is tasty, but it's not FRIED!)

I'd prefer some fried Spam over fried balogna but that isn't the problem with the sandwich.

What right thinking person would let American cheese into their home?

I'm having a fried bologna sandwich with blue cheese and garlic for lunch - I'd rate this about 3 Altoids.

National Bologna Day? Who so decreed it? The Lunch Meat lobby?

True, they carry a lot of weight in D.C. (especially in the pre-schools) and they've become even more powerful since they saddled up to the potato chip, white bread & mayo lobbies -- but good heavens, what an atrocity of scrap meat and sawdust!

Still, it is mighty good.

Mightygood.

I always detested bologna out of the package, ala Oscal Meyer and still think it is foul. However, we used to get it fresh from the deli in NY (It may have been Boar's Head brand) and it was much, much better. The best way I could describe the difference is: imagine a package of sliced turkey loaf compared to fresh sliced turkey breast from the deli counter. No comparison.

Wake me up when it's cheeseburger day. :)

Coming soon, sort of:

National Hamburger Day--December 21

then there is:
National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day--November 12
National Pigs-in-a-blanket Day--April 24
Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day--February 11
National Caviar Day--July 18
National Escargot Day--May 24

and if you overindulge:
National Bicarbonate of Soda Day--December 30

I have no idea who the arbiters may be who decide on what food/drink/whatever is what day (other than the food companys themselves)

Then there is this fun site (http://www.twinkiesproject.com/)

Am I the only person here who HATES bologna?

Since it has been half a lifetime since I last ate bologna I can't honestly say. But I don't see why I would. I always figured bologna (of the Oscar Meyer variety anyway) was just a 4"-diameter hot dog cut into slices.

It's been an equal amount of time since I hate a pork/beef hot dog but the turkey ones are similar enough that I figure bologna would still be ok as well.

I'll wait for National Head Cheese Day.

CoasterMatt

Prudence
10-24-2006, 04:06 PM
Anchovies can be good in things! And they're yummy atop a salad. Haven't tried the menudo, though.

Capt Jack
10-24-2006, 04:21 PM
good menudo is hard to come by short of home made. even then its hard to find it where I would call it 'good'.

'chovies...its been so long since I had any I've forgotten if I liked them or not. I seem to remember liking them, but clearly remember being in the minority even suggesting it as a pizza topping.

other 'I like it, but no one else I know does' items include

chorizo
smoked eel
turnips
ham hocks
pickled pigs feet
nopales (cactus)
liver & onions
bratwurst
kippers
(the list goes on and on)

Turnips are good. The rest of your list...your sodium levels must be off the charts.

eh, its not like I get to eat those glorious culinary delights that often. :(

as far as the brats..the folks Im usually around are the dullest eaters on earth. pretty much, if it doesnt start with "mac n..." or end with "...helper", they're not interested.

Alex

Yeah, none of the things on that list are all that uncommon except nopales.

But then there are very few things I won't try at least once. Natto being the only thing that comes immediately to mind.
