I wanna go!!! ;) Costermatt??? Anyone!?

Greetings from The Mutaytor. We hope this note sees you doing well, and that you are having a great autumn. We have something special coming up, and we’d like to ask your help to please help us spread the word.

After a crazy year of national touring, we are bringing our show back home to Los Angeles, and we’re shooting our first concert DVD. We never dreamed that we’d be in a place where we’d be bringing our show to the rest of the world, and now we get to shoot our first DVD…it’s very exciting, and a little bit scary!!! Our date is for Friday, November 17th at the Fonda Music Box in Hollywood.

We are very proud to announce that we’ll be welcoming some amazing musical guests for the evening for some musical magical mutaytions: From legendary LA icons Oingo Boingo, we’ll welcome John Avila, Steve Bartok and Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez and from Jane’s Addiction, we’ll welcome superstar Stephen Perkins on drums and percussion!! Holy crap…the sounds that night will be off the charts, and we look forward to melting your brain with amazing sounds.

We have a great home base audience in L.A. and we’d like to ask all of our friends and family to make this concert our biggest and best ever, and we’d really like to ask your help to do your best to attend the show, and reach out to your friends, lists, groups and tribes to help us promote this event. With the DVD shoot, we have the chance to show the entire world what Mutaytor is all about, and we promise you we won’t disappoint!

We’ve never released any live recordings of Mutaytor before…we have 4 studio CDs, but that’s it. We are crafting a special fans-only bootleg CD of our favorite live Mutaytor tracks, and we’re going to give a free copy of this CD to the first 300 paid admission ticket holders at The Fonda on November 17th!

Part Cirque du Soleil…part Flaming Lip…part Vegas revue….Part Bowie…The Mutaytor will be featuring their giantl production spectacle at the Fonda: 50 drums, dual djs, 3 piece horn section, fire dancers, aerialists, martial artists, burlesque, interactive video displays, and musicians and dancers from Oingo Boingo, Supertramp, Rippingtons, Lucha Va Voom, Cirque Berzerk, Madonna and Pink.

SO, here’s my little review of THe MUTAYTOR show that I went to on Friday November 17 at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood.

A little background first. I saw them first at Universal Horror Nights back in OCtober. They had a huge set up and I was very impressed with the music and the theatrics. Not only is it amazing drum rhythms, but horns and a totally psychotic bass line throughout their “orchestrations.” There’s really no singing or lyrics, just a rhythm and that’s what you get on their CD. Their stage shows include, fire, dancers, acrobatics, puppets and lots of dancing girls. So I then heard they were playing locally and filming a dvd. I wanted to go, but no one could (Until I “persuaded” CM to go) and my expectation were pretty good. But seeing this show just took my expectations and shot it thru the roof. It went beyond all I expected.

So, Matt and I got there and lined up with a pretty freakish crowd. Lots of wild outfits and big hair and makeup. I was a bit let down because in my jeans and t-shirt, I really stood out! So, with CM suggestion, I went and got my light up Mouse Ears. The other initial let down was the crowd was pretty small. Maybe 50 people were waiting to get in.

After the let us in we wandered the theater, which was an old movie house. Their web site has alot of info on it, if you Google it. It’s quite swanky. But the upstairs has seating, like a theater and downstairs by the stage there is just an open floor and a bar in the back. The stage was set up with about 1000 pieces of equipment. Lights everywhere, cameras and the such.

The opening act was Stolen Babies. An interesting goth type act consisting of a female lead singer on the Accordion, and bass, drummer, guitarist and a keyboardist that had a large metal drum that he’d beat during the show. Most of it was screaming so I didn’t catch any of the lyrics, but I thought they were pretty damn good. The good part was that there weren’t many people there initially, so CM and I got up against the “barricade” against the stage and on the right side. So a great view.

The Mutaytor show is tough to describe, so I will be brief about it. Its something everyone should see. Its incredible. Their press release says it best:

Part Cirque du Soleil…part Flaming Lip…part Vegas revue….Part Bowie…The Mutaytor will be featuring their giantl production spectacle at the Fonda: 50 drums, dual djs, 3 piece horn section, fire dancers, aerialists, martial artists, burlesque, interactive video displays, and musicians and dancers from Oingo Boingo, Supertramp, Rippingtons, Lucha Va Voom, Cirque Berzerk, Madonna and Pink.

Guests that night included Steve Bartok and Johnny “Vatos” Hernandez from Oingo Boingo and from Jane’s Addiction, Stephen Perkins. John Avila who was the Basest for Oingo is part of Mutaytor now, and was also there.

Some highlights:

A large “Character” dog comes out on stage and starts h umping the dancers.

-- Lots of fire. Dancers with baton touches. One twirling in the air and then they would eat the fire. They had hula hoops of fire.

-- They had a belly dancer that you just couldn’t take you eyes off.

Like I said, so much you see and its tough to describe it all. I'm sure CM will come in with more details of all the goings on.

Check out their site, check out the music, which CD really can’t totally bring the the whole experience and I know they’re playing locally in December. I will be there. YOu all should too!!

PS, I have some pictures and will post them here soon!

It was a big freakin' fun FUN FUN party...
There were lots of freaky people (and Erik, you should have been there - acres of cleavage).
There were people in fun costumes - A guy in a NASA jumpsuit, a girl in a gold dress with leds around the bodice, the dude to my left in the big shag carpet green thing with a plush snake at the end...

It felt like a mini version of Burning Man - just a big creative blast!
There were upwards of 20 people onstage at times, just jammin' along - and when Steve Bartek and John Avila got a chance to let go and rip during their second set, I was just in a state of euphoria.

My voice is all crackly today from whoopin' and hollerin' so much, but it was worth it. My legs are sore from jumpin' up and down like a kangaroo on speed, but it's alright.

December, 16 2006 at Island of Misfit Toys - www.hipgenesis.com
Virgin Location - Downtown Warehouse Location, Los Angeles, California
Cost: $15/$20
Broken glass twinkled like ice as he wandered, walking alone through the multicoloured shadows. How much longer, how much further? he wondered. Then suddenly, something caught his eye. A scantily clad plastic figure with a half-shaved head and sharpied eyes. She was following a tin monkey in a tassled fez. It toyed idly with broken cymbals as it waddled drunkenly on rusted feet. Were they discarded? Were they misfit as he was? His heart lept as dreams of kinship washed over him. "Hey!" he called out excitedly. She turned to look but before she could answer, the monkey grunted as he yanked on her leash, pulling her into a crack on the wall of a dilapidated warehouse. He could see nothing through the darkness, but heard strange music faintly emanating from within. Was this it? he wondered. Gathering his courage, he stepped on through. Beyond the crack was a frantic scene. Lights twinkled all around. Stringless marionettes danced freely as patchworked animals frolicked. Raucous laughter filled the air. A pile of cracked porcelain dolls and wound up clockwork creatures tangled themselves atop a playing field of brightly coloured dots. Raggedy puppets beat upon raging drums as hundreds of bizarre and curious toys capered all about for as far as the eye could see. And all of this beneath the shadow of a great, wonderful, and twisted Christmas tree. There was magic all about. The Lost Toy smiled. Finally, he had found his way home... I really am interested in going to the next one - it looks like you guys had a hell of a lot of fun... HOWEVER... I think I have tickets to see a friend of a friend sing in a charity chior - and it's some kind of huge deal, and it's on the same day.

Let me know if they do something on that date, or weekend, I'm sure I'd love to go and bring a friend!
