[Ghoulish Delight]

I'm sure there was a thread before, but I can't find it.

So, finding KRCW and NPR's treasure trove of free podcasts is threatening to be a very expensive discovery for me. They are doing an excellent job of keeping me abreast of new music that I must have. I'm holding off on purchases for now because it's almost time to renew our KCRW membership and there's a better than good chance that several of the selections I'm interested in will be acquired as membership rewards.

BTW, for a really good rundown of what was new and worth it this year, check out this episode (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6557143) of All Songs Considered. I can't agree with everything on that top 10 list, or the top 10 lists of the critics on the show, but it provided me with a great variety of stuff to check out.

So here's what I'm eying right now:

Tom Waits: Hard to get enough Waits, and this 3 disc collection sounds fabulous. Any hesitation I might have had evaporated when I heard that it ends with 6 consecutive spoken word tracks. *drool*

Black Angels: The band name comes from a Velvet Underground song, and the live up to their namesake. Someone on that All Songs Considered show described their new album (Passover) affectionately as, "loud and droney". It's just good old psych-rock, I ain't complaining.

Jim Noir: Trying to single handedly bring back harmonies. Directly influenced by the Beach Boys and the Beatles and not ashamed to admit it. In this world of emo, fake-punk, and prog-rock, it's refreshing.

Lilly Allen: I don't think her album's out in America yet, but her voice is incredible and dynamic. I tend to be overly picky and judgmental about female vocalists. She quickly met my standards with a great variety of sound.

TV On The Radio: This is a maybe at the moment, I need more time with it. I've heard the name floating around, and I think I've heard some of their stuff, but I just really listened to some samples yesterday and I think I like their sound.


And that's just after my first pass. I suspect my list will only grow.

Meanwhile, I know what I don't want. The Decemberists. I'm apparently missing something. I've heard several different tracks, studio versions and live versions, and I think they suck. Everyone else in the indie world is drooling all over themselves for them. They seem to be enamored with the IDEA of them and missing the fact that they sound like crap. I mean, they've got a clever angle in that all of the lyrics are based on world mythology and folk lore, and they pretend to be musically interesting by using a lot of different instruments. But in the end, they are loud and droney (and I say that with none of the affection used for Black Angels) and sound like an even more boring Green Day (I know, who knew that was even possible).

Ah KCRW is evil in that way. I haven't been listening much since I've been taking the train, but maybe now that I have DSL again I can subscribe to some podcasts.

I'm with you on the Decemberists, I hear a lot of hype, but what I've heard so far from them haven't inspired me.

I liked Lilly Allen at first, but I got really tired of her brand of pop pretty fast.

I, too am droolong about the 3 CD Tom Waits anthology - I started a thread about it with an NPR interview a while back. I't actually in my car at Amazon, but the total is now almost $500 and I just can't afford it and can't figure out what not to buy.

I still haven't gotten the latest Scissor Sisters or a REAL copy of the latest - and magnificent - Koop CD.

Interestingly, my CD list isn't all that long - but we have made some very recent and expensive trips to both Tower and Fngerprintz.

I've got a few "must haves" added to my list recently. Sadly, some haven't been released yet.

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

Fantastic old-school jazzy and soulful music from a very young Brit performer. She also has another first album out that I may need to pic up. The tune "I'm No Good" is incredibly fun. She reminds me of Shirley Bassy.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

I haven't heard much from their forthcoming release but I am looking forward to this none the less.

Forro in the Dark - Bonfires of São João (already released)

Fun, experimental Brazlian inspired trio who somehow has gotten David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto and Miho Hatori to guest on songs for their first album. The Byrne song alone is enough for me to buy it.


Fugiya & Miyagi - Transparentthings

Not Japanese but more Brits. The song Photocopier got my attention (I think they use the riff from Life During Wartime) but the other things I've heard intrigue me.

re: Arcade Fire. I've heard a handful of cuts from the new album and I was kinda meh about it...until I saw them on SNL. Just as I was kinda meh about Funeral until I saw them live at Coachella, their stage presence just sells me on them. Too bad their only SoCal appearances this year seem to be Coachella and a Thursday in San Diego.

Meanwhile, I'm eying The Good, The Bad, and The Queen. I'm just a sucker for anything David Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). And this project has Paul Simonon (bassist from the Clash) and Simon Tong (guitar from Verve). It distinctly sounds like yet another Albarn project...which is exactly what I want.

Pacha Massive is another one on my radar.

History Song is getting some airplay and I like the song, but I get sort of dulled-out by the rest of the tracks I've heard. It's sure nice to see Paul has a job though. ;)

The Kinfe (http://www.theknife.net/o0o.html) - I love a band with a persona, and this Swedish brother and sister act has that. They refuse to perform live until recently, and whenever they appear in public they wear costume-ball masks. And I really like the tracks I've heard.

Dälek (http://www.amazon.com/Abandoned-Language-Dalek/dp/B000MGVCIG) - (thanks SM) I rarely like hip-hop, but every once in a while something hits me right. This is one of those.

Oooh ooh! I'm seeing The Books in Porltand. I love them so much. Word is that they sync their songs with video live for an all inclusive experiences for the senses. So far, Lemon of Pink is my favorite album. Japan fans, check out their song Tokyo.

I'm not usually in the habit of buying single tracks preferring full albums. Generally, if a band can't make more than one or two songs I'm interested in, then forget it.

But I might make an exception for Portobella (http://myspace.com/portobellauk). We heard the track "Say What You Wanna Say" on KCRW and loved it. So we checked out their MySpace page. Most of the other tracks seem to be pretty uninteresting, but for some reason I'm really really digging "Covered in Punk" despite myself. So I may have to spring for those two tracks if and when they become available in the US.

There was an earlier post about Justice. I check them out and it landed me over with Simian. Took me a while to track them down, but I found them. And I love, love, love them. Found the album on Amazon. Love. It.

Klaxons Not totally in love with them yet. Only picked up Golden Skans on iTunes. Need decision making time.

Fratellis - Yum.

Finally got loaded up on Guillemots.

And Combichrist. Definitely not for everyone. To me, they're sort of a cross between KMFDM, Ministry, with a hint here and there of Benny Benassi.

Last, but certainly not least... I really need to thank € & NA for putting on Wire in the car the other day. Good stuff. Very, very, very good stuff.

I like this quote from their MySpace bio. How come they're called "Adult Movies" when the only thing they show is people making babies filmed up close? I'm feeling so much better since I learned to avert my eyes: now it's Disney Time.

I've long awaited the next Arcade Fire album. Found it was released yesterday and am now giving it a first listen. Not disappointed at all. Different from their first but still very much their distinct sound. Dig it. Snaps up all around.

Also bought Amy Winehouse and was blown away. And Blonde Redhead. Very cool listening this afternoon.

Though I put quite the dent in my food budget for next 10 days.

Indeed - disappointing show at Coachella this year, equipment problems and poor set-up delayed their set and was ultimately cut short. Their last show though - divine. Rumour has it they may make it back to LA later in the year.

I like them in films. I think they often provide the perfect soundtrack, in The Virgin Suicides for instance.

I don't care too much for their standalone music. I find myself missing the accompanying visuals and feeling more than a bit sleepy.

Aww!! When I read Crossroads, I was keeping my fingers crossed that you were refering to the Britney Spears movie, or rather vehicle, of the same name.

That movie not only was a young, curious teenage girl's coming-of-age tale entering into love and adulthood, but more importantly, it featured Britney as the valedictorian of her high school graduating class. Yes, valedictorian.

It also brought us a hit song in the form of I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman.

Oh Crossroads, why you never make it onto the list of cinema classics I'll never know. However, you were fortunate enough to make it into my DVD library- filed under "guilty shame that my loved ones can never, ever know that I chose to purchase".

Ok, how bizarre. I was going to revive this long-dead thread today, but a change of information caused me to delete my post.


Two weeks ago I went to Amoeba with my ex, Kelly. She works for a small record label, New West Records, and was on the prowl for some music related to artists under that label.

So I figured I might as well look for something, too. I pulled up this old thread and scanned for some recommendations, and - when I came across some posts about Ghostland Observatory, I remembered that Ghoulish Delight had also relayed an in-person recommend about that group.

So I look all over Amoeba for their CDs, but come up empty. I ask at the Information Desk, and they tell me they've got nothing by Ghostland Observatory.

Well, if you don't have your CDs at Amoeba, you are in music nowheresville.




So today Kelly calls me up and asks what that band was called that I was looking for at Amoeba. And then tells me her record label just signed Ghostland Observatory for their future releases.


Hahahaha, I love coincidences. But as I'm posting that cool story in this thread, she emails me that New West is not signing them, simply releasing a DVD centered around the group's performances last Spring at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin.



Still a coincidence, but less awesomely so. I deleted the post.



Then I see that someone else (Prudence) has decided to revive this thread today. That's a coincidence worthy of me posting my less awesome coincidence. :cool:

I swear I saw that Ghostland Observatory was going to have their albums available on iTunes, but only the live album is up there, which was there before. Neither of the stuido albums are and I can find no trace of where I might have seen that. Apparently their minister of misinformation is working over time.

None the less, they continue to rock and I may have to make a trip to Vegas in October to see them.

And while we're on that subject:

It's struck me that Ghostland Observatory is playing on Sunday at Vegoose, while every other act I'd want to see is playing on Saturday. :mad:

Meanwhile, I've learned that GO is playing in New York...on the night of the 19th, which is the day we had planned to do an early morning drive to Boston. At this point, I'm seriously considering sticking around, catching the show, and doing a late-night drive up to Beantown. It might be a bit ambitious, but it's just the kind of ill-advised scheme that befits a trip to New York, no? Especially considering that mousepod will be joining us (he says while still on IM trying to convince him of this fact).
