I can hear the cringing on LoT now.......

For a limited time (from January 3 through April 26, 2007), guests will experience Space Mountain like never before. The high-speed interstellar adventure, that has captivated Disneyland guests since the 1970s, will temporarily have an all-new twist. Rockin' Space Mountain fans will find the attraction sporting new technology that features illuminated dancing rock fans, more than 200 lights brightening the track and a brand-new, customized soundtrack by Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band's famous song,"Higher Ground," which was a 1989 hit version of the Stevie Wonder original tune, will create an out-of-this-world rock adventure. Along with new technology and lighting, all systems are a go.


Personally, I can't wait to see the "dancing rock fans"! :rolleyes:

But lots of flashing lights and projections I can do without. However, I insist on flashing lights and projections for California Screamin' just so I can see where they'd flash them from and project them onto.

I'm into trying something different at all times, and I will probably check it out before it goes. What disappoints me, like the others have said, is the musical selection. I used to like the Chili Peppers - that is until Southern California radio stations decided to oversaturate the airwaves with their latest craptastic album. If there's anything positive, the ride might bring me back to a time when the Peppers were listenable to me, though chances are I will become instantly agitated at the first moments of Anthony Kiedis' voice.

I guess I am in the minority because when I read that I was quite excited.
I don't know about their song selection, I'd have gone with a couple of other songs.

I love the Peppers and their latest album is actually quite good. To me. I was just thinking about that today {how ironic} that I think that may be the best cd I purchased all year. Tops with She Wants Revenge.

Anywho, I was wondering if RHCP might show up for some kind of ceremony? Anyone know?

But, I don't ride those rides so I won't experience what ever it is they've done.

I think what bothers me about this, is it's a poor-man's Rock and Roller Coaster. That's a fun ride in itself, and would be a great addition to DCA. But I can't help but think when I was young, in the single digits how cool Tomorrowland was, for being Tommorrowland and indulging all my sci-fi fantasies of space travel.

I'd be okay if they camped it up a la Dick Dale, but it sounds like all the detailed theming that you are in an actual space port gets thrown out the window as you are launched into a disco.

It's a fine grad-night gimmick to pull out every now and then, but to run it like that for months? No thank you.

NA, sadly, I haven't heard too much from Hoobestank. I have their latest cd's but I haven't heard anything be picked up.

3-11 has some pretty 'hip' tunes. I also heard a 'Muse' song that I thought would be cool.

I, personally, am glad it isn't one of the bands I won't mention. A lot of groups are, to me, boy bands diguised as rock bands.

They had me crying with laughter one day in the HM queue. (All the music is by dead rock stars, if I recall correctly). Their stretch room, in particular, would alone be worth the price of admission to Disneyland!

I'm cool with the concept in abstract. When I first heard about "Rockit Mountain" (which is a much better title than "Rockin' Space Mountain") I thought it would be like Space Mountain only with the asteroid lit up, some flashy red lights maybe, and a new soundtrack.

This, though, is probably the worst decision they've made at the parks in years. I can understand the context on Grad Night. I loved grad night, especially as a Disney fan. Seeing the park lit up with gaudy spinning lights and hearing Nelly in New Orleans Square was fun and a great way to see the park differently.

Rockin' Space Mountain as an all-day, several month fixture, though. Oh my gosh that's a horrible idea. I can't get too upset because I think my schedule doesn't even allow me to see it, but I really hope this isn't going to be a trend.

Rockin' Splash Mountain, where the animals sing hits from Green Day's latest album in the crossover event of the season!

Rockin' Fantasmic! where Mickey defeats the dragon by playing guitar solos from U2's classic hits!

I mean seriously.

It's as if someone said, "Well, we spent the money to put this stuff in durring the overhaul, so by god we're gonna use it!" Doesn't matter that there are other guests who aren't teenage hard-rock fans riding. They will force everyone to witness this crap that they tossed in thinking it was a good idea.

Well, you know what? If it's such a good idea, then why is it temporary? Are they just making it go live for a short time to warrent the expenditure? Or are they going to see how the response is, considering weather or not it will become permanent?

This just in: zapppop reports Rockin' Space Mountain is CRAPTACULAR! It is, as many suspected, a poor man's Rockin' Rollercoaster. He thought it was entirely stupid.

And, hehe, they don't use the cool Rockit Mountain sign (now) hidden (forever) behind the Space Mountain sign ... they merely pasted a cardboard "Rockin" above "Space Mountain." Grad Niters were the only ones to ever see the cool sign.

(If only they could have been the only ones to experience this lame overlay).


Gemini Cricket's early report was even more dire and disappointed.


Oh well, I'm looking forward to finally being able to see the Space Mountain track as I ride.

Oh yea, there's a Rockin' addition to the sign, and ... unlike the one for Space Mountain ... the Rockin' actually lights up.


Other than that ... absolutely no change other than the music. No lights, no effects, same old launch countdown. Bleh.

But at least the ride is not a travesty of itself ... since, ahem, it's the exact same ride with a different song playing.

Despite “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” being the highest grossing movie of last year and despite the fact that Disneyland’s numbers are up, Disney still insists on "cheaping out" on Disneyland and its attractions. And riding Disneyland’s Rockit Space Mountain will prove it to you.

Promoted as a “cool for teens type of experience”, the ride proves itself to be nothing more than an ill-conceived overlay brought to you by a bunch of Disney businessmen who have long forgotten how to be cool much less how to identify what younger generations might find appealing.

After a tedious 70-120 minute wait for the attraction, the queue and the loading area do not hint at all of the horrors that await guests. The sign out front, near another poorly thought out “attraction” Cosmic Waves, touts the ride as “Rockit Space Mountain”. But that is the first and last time you will see any sort of visual billing for the ride. This makes one feel that the concept was tacked on shoddily without much thought involved.

As you start your journey, you will notice that the soundtrack for the attraction has changed. Gone is the hip retro sounding score. What replaces it is a DJ’s voice who welcomes you to Rockit Space Mountain. It’s far too cheesy and out of place for this ride. The DJ seems to be doing a commercial for himself and the Red Hot Chili Peppers as well. The announcement can be compared to the news broadcast that interrupts the awful Starship song, “We Built this City”… and what is to come for the riders is equally as horrid.

The launch tunnel is now laden with special effects that one can easily find on their iTunes set up on their home computer. (Just click on View and then on Visualizer.) After you pass through Visualizer tunnel, all hell breaks loose. While the speakers are blaring an over modulated Flea and friends in your ears, you realize that you are riding Space Mountain with the lights on.

The fun of riding the January 2, 2007 Space Mountain is that there is an illusion that you are floating and flying through space. The track and the warehouse that houses the attraction are hidden from view. This ride was in the dark for 30 years because it should be. The ride with the lights on is hideous. You find yourself in the dusty, gray “Rhythm Nation” warehouse that Janet Jackson danced around in clad in a military uniform. The building is cold, industrial and blah. Unlike that video, one doesn’t get to look at good dancing. What a rider gets are projections of shadow people that look like renegades from an iPod commercial.

Add a few strobe lights, a couple of spotlights and a number of chaser lights that illuminate where the pedestrian handrails are for the ride and you have Rockit Space Mountain. There are long portions of this ride that has nothing for you to look at while you zoom by.

The best part about Rockit Space Mountain is that it eventually ends. The only thing a die hard Disneyland fan will enjoy is riding Space Mountain with the lights on. But gone are the surprise turns and that nice unexpected dip somewhere near the midway point of the ride. And speaking of surprises and dips, gone are the days when Disneyland could truly surprise with attraction offerings but clearly present are the corporate dips that continue to do Disneyland on the cheap who then become stunned to find out that no one likes their tripe.

I guarantee that somewhere in Burbank sits an Imagineer’s concept drawings for Rockit Space Mountain that could have made this overlay fantastic. You know, something pristine and magical… that is, before the suits, accountants and lawyers shredded it apart. Who knows, maybe we’ll see it ten years from now hanging in a frame at the Disney Gallery or at the Disneyland Hotel. We’ll look at that and say, “Wow! That would have been way better. I wonder why they didn’t spend the money and do it that way?”

It’s time for the leadership at Disneyland to start listening to their guests and give them rides and attractions that aren’t shoddy, half-assed and cheap. Many of us have had enough of these lightly magical ideas that make us as disappointed as a Disney’s California Adventure guest.

Rockit Space Mountain will get the curious into the park to improve the numbers during the usually slow months between New Years and summer, but it’s as unappealing and unrepeatable as the miserable and similar sounding Tomorrowland attraction: Rocket Rods. Let’s hope it rockets away just as fast.

Despite “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” being the highest grossing movie of last year and despite the fact that Disneyland’s numbers are up, Disney still insists on "cheaping out" on Disneyland and its attractions. And riding Disneyland’s Rockit Space Mountain will prove it to you.
To be fair, that wasn't the original plan, and the reason for it being super-cheap is a good one. When Ouimet took over before the 50th, he decided that it was absolutely imperative that Space Mountain be reopened by the summer 50th kick off. By that time, it was too late to completely axe the Rockit Mountain idea, so he did the next best thing: slashed it down to the bare minimum to save time and money to accelerate the completion of the ride. And by golly, he did it.

The stupid decision was, even after slashing it to nothing, to open it to the public like this. They were stuck for Grad Nights because they had already advertised it. But they were under no obligation to do anything beyond that. I guess they are doing it as an attempt to justify even the scaled-back expense, as well as a cheap way to create advertising buzz without spending further money.

My thoughts:

I enjoyed it, I liked it but I didn't love it. I loved the coaster ride, which seemed slower and it was cool to have the chance to let my inner-geek out and actually get to see the track and surrounding areas -made it worth while. If anything goes on the "should stay" side, I love the launch tube so much better now than the one in regular Space Mtn. I won't miss "Rockin" when its gone, but I will enjoy the attraction while its here.

Matt made the right choice in my opinion by sacrificing Rockit to get Space open in time (accepting the fact that completely pulling the plug wasn't an option). So I don't think you can add this to the "they cheaped out" mistake list with Pooh and Pirates. Doesn't mean it's not a mistake, just a different kind of mistake.

Went on this thing last night with lots of aggressive, in-your-face suburban types that seemed excited by the changeover. Zero change to the outside of the building (it's now a building), queue, loading area, or employee uniforms. Half the lights in the upstairs queue area were not funtioning, dozens of people wandered around the painted "launch pad" smoking, talking on cell phones, and literally climbing the walls. The ride itself seems slower, the wall projections are lame, the music choice is in no way clever (or even loud,) in short, it's exactly what you should expect when Disney tries to be "edgy." And yet we line up for it. In droves. We line up for pirated Pirates. We line up for the Princess Fantasy Faire and Pocketbook Pillage. We are giving truth to the lie of "If it's good enough for Magic Mountain."

Every year I buy a premium passport, last year I bought a So Cal. This year I'm likely to do the same. I used to love Disneyland. Disneyland always gave me so much in return for my time and attention. I never felt badly for spending money. Now, I feel like Disneyland has turned into the opportunistic date that knows they're pretty, and knows that there are plenty of other guys who'll shell out cash if I won't.

Well.....

I just got home from beautiful Anaheim California. {technically Garden Grove...}

And, where was the fire? I could smell it from the hotel and it was nasty. :p

But, back to the topic.

The Hubster and Boy rode Rockin' Space Mountain and they loved it. They said it went well with the ride.

As I was waitingfor them to get off of the ride, I saw a dad walking with his son, probably 5 to 7 {height wise, I can't tell the age}. He was crouching down to talk to him at his level "That was the Red Hot Chili Peppers...they are a famous rock group.' :snap:

And, while I wouldn't moan about it or send e-mails, yes, I am glad they aren't using Hannah Montana.

AND we didn't get to ride Rockin Screamin' but we stood by where they take off from and that was cool to hear the music take off when the train did.

My son said he hopes they never take it off of Space Mountain. :D

And, we didn't get to ride it at night because, yep, no more fast pass.

Also no 9:25 fireworks or 10:30 Fantasmic!. Bummer 'cause my son hasn't ever seen it.

We gave it a shot. I even sat in front (which may have been the problem), but while it was neat seeing the track, it made the ride seem INCREDIBLY slow. There was not one iota of the fear factor left in theis ride that still has been wanting to grab on to something. The DJ at lift off was beyond lame and caused uncontrollable eye-rolling. Interesting concept and, of don well could've been wonderful, but it really did disappointment me - at least on the first run. I choose not to go back for a second run later in the evening.

It's interesting to ride once, and see the stuff you normally don't see - but for any notion of simulated space flight - nah, it's just a coaster with music and a rather lame light show. Put some hot CMs in go-go cages, hang a few gobos, anything. I think this is fine for a grad night change up, but as a makeover? eh build a real rockin Roller coaster.

I enjoyed the ride. I dug seeing the track. I've always liked the song, it was plenty loud, and I felt it went well with the ride. Uncle Joe Benson doing the countdown made me laugh in recognition. I would totally ride it again.

The projections were lame and the lighting was crappy. It could have been so much better. But that's what we were told - they cut the budget on this in order to have it open on time for the 50th.

I agree that it's unnecessary, that they shouldn't have done this stupid Rockin Both Parks crap, and especially annoying that Lashbear is getting screwed, but I'm really glad they didn't go with Hoobastank. As it is, I can enjoy it just fine until they pull it out again.

I know I'm in the minority. Guess I'll have to ride it with Nirvanaman and Babette. :D

As prepared to hate it as I was, it was beyond my lamest expectations. A rollercoaster ride through Spencer's Gifts. I have better concert lighting in my apartment.

It's very hard to top the Paris' version of Rock'n'Rollercoaster for stupidity, but this one takes the prize ... lacking as it does any semblance of actual modern-era concert lighting effects. The effort was so unbelieveably lowball, and this is one of Disney's saddest efforts - - seriously looking to have cost about $4,000.



That said, the geek in me loved seeing the layout and inner structure of Space Mountain, and gazing on other cars speeding (well, moving slowly) along other parts of the track. But why on earth they would entirely eliminate the brilliance of the outer space concept that utterly transforms it from an ordinary coaster - - leaving but a poor man's lamest rock'n'ordinary rollercoaster - - is beyond me.

We went Saturday for the Munchkin's birthday. Both she and her pal LOVED it. Thought it was the best ride ever (they're 11). They were willing to stand in line for over an hour to do it again, I wasn't. Fastpasses were gone around 1 PM.

It was ok, not the worst thing ever but the DJ part was pretty lame. And it does seem slower plus the lighting is just crap. Why not just put up winky blinkie christmas lights?

I rode it Friday. I tried to take it with an open mind. I was actually more excited to be able to see the track than I was to listen to the ride audio. That said.

I rode it alone, and as such was stuck in a rocket with a bunch of teenage girls. They actually had a genuinely good time, as the music played (which I wasn't really listening too.) They were just rockin out bobbing their heads and throwing their hands up to the music. They'd either ridden before or knew the song well cause they were singing along and having a good ol' time.

I actually enjoyed being able to see someone enjoy the ride. Do I think the ride will be able to maintain it's longevity, not really, it's just a marketing gimmick at this point. I do miss regular old space mountain, but I thought it was cool to be able to see the track and how slow the vehicles really actually move. I wouldn't mind riding it a couple of more times, but I'm not going to go just to ride it.

The factors in common are simply that there are two separate tracks in the same facility, and the ride vehicles have single-file seating like the bobsleds (especially like the upcoming bobsleds after the next Matterhorn refurb).

I went on it today...it was...interesting to say the least.

I had an idea on what to expect from grad night, but it was still weird to ride SM thinking I was on Rockin' Roller Coaster at MGM Studios. I didn't like how ALL THEY DID was repeat the SAME RIFF from Higher Ground OVER and OVER. And the blue and yellow stop lights just hurt my eyes. I did, however, like the running blue lights along the top run.

Did anyone else think they could have done more in the line to...I don't know...hint at what you are riding? A lot of people were confused as to why they just heard RHCP on Space Mountain when they got off...like my sisters. They, however, loved it and wanted to ride it over and over.

It was fun. I had fun on the ride. There! I will ride it again and again. Just forget the word "space", go in with no expectations, feel the music (I love RHCP) and have fun. I actually think they did a good job of mixing the music to match the movements of parts of the ride.

I judge things on my personal fun-factor. I understand that seeing the track, cheap lights, different music, etc. may not be fun for many of you. No worries, it will be over in a couple months people. Lemme (and CP & NM) enjoy it ;)

It's always been one of my fondest desires to ride Space Mountain once or twice with the lights on, just to see the track layout ... and frankly I like the current version better for that than I would the white warehouse look of a real "lights on" experience.

But it's never far from my consciousness that Space Mountain works precisely to the extent the track is hidden, and the feeling of flying through star-filled space is achieved. It's always been one of my fondest desires to ride Space Mountain once or twice with the lights on, just to see the track layout ... and frankly I like the current version better for that than I would the white warehouse look of a real "lights on" experience.

But it's never far from my consciousness that Space Mountain works precisely to the extent the track is hidden, and the feeling of flying through star-filled space is achieved. Rainbow Glasses TM both obliterate the track and prismisfy the stars, and I love them for both qualities. I'll not want to see the track again.

So, I finally rode Rockin' Screaming tonight. I thought it was better than the old version.

So, I finally rode Rockin' Screaming tonight. I thought it was better than the old version.

Space can go to hell, but Screaming works.My feeling exactly. Just rode it on Friday and I enjoyed it quite a bit, even though it intensified an already-there headache. I love that song and I think it matches the coaster much better than the old music, which tried to make it seem more thrilling. This really is a comparatively laid back coaster and it needed laid back music. I hope they keep it!

I really liked Screamin' but it no longer likes me. My friend said I looked like Casper when I got off of it :(. I loved the new music and I may go on it once more before it is supposed to glow away. I hope it stays though.
