For the first freaking time in my life we have a comet sitting at a brightness of magnitude -8.8 That's 40 times brighter than venus! Bright enough to be seen in BROAD DAYLIGHT!

and of course it's been totally overcast here for the last week. ARRRRRRGGHHHH!!!

Go out and look for it (http://www.spaceweather.com/)if you are lucky enough to have a clear sky (http://www.spaceweather.com/images2007/15jan07/skymap_north.gif).

This is truly one not to miss.

I don't see it, but I'm sure it is there and am not being patient enough.

Have you tried looking outside?

I looked for it yesterday but I only got a headache. I'll have to look later. The skies are crystal clear at the moment.

Almost too clear, I just went out for a look and was quickly blinded no matter how much shading of the sun I did.

Ditto. Nice day, though.

The link Moonliner referenced said the best time to look would be at local noon, and that the comet would just be to the left of the sun, about 6 degrees. Since the sun moves at 15 degrees per hour, I think the sun is currently blocking the comet. I'd wait until after local noon, and take another look.

Are you sure those are the lyrics? (http://youtube.com/watch?v=r6U29S--wn8)

Do a lyrics search. I found at least 3 different "translations" - none of them were correct (as I know it.)

This is how America will get conquered-with everyone half-blind from staring up at the sky looking for comet hoaxes. Hello, Kohoutek.

It's "cut loose like a deuce another runner in the night" on the Springsteen original

I looked at a daytime picture of it online. That's good enough for me. A bright dot in the middle of blue. It brings portends of doom, I'm sure.

(I'm a weird fan of astronomy; I love the subject and am very well read on it but have very little interest in actually looking at the stuff; I don't believe I've ever looked through a telescope...at the sky anyway).

I am not kidding when I say that I thought the lyrics were "wrecked up like a douch..."

I grew up with four older sisters. It gave me a feminine perspective to everything.

Gee, my friend in Scotland hasn't had much luck seeing the comet either. I wonder why...

I didn't realize the deuce is referring to a deuce coupe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Model_B_(1932))

Woohoo!! The clouds are finally gone! Nothing but sunshine and a clear blue sky. :)

Comet McNaught is no longer visible from the northern hemisphere, but it should remain a spectacular fixture in sunset skies of the south for weeks to come. Stay tuned!

Oh - we saw the comet clearly. "There's the comet," BT said on the way home from work last week.

It's not really sour grapes, in this particular case you SoCal'ers were a bit latitudinally challenged. While up here in the great white north we had a shot.
