Well, last night was the end of my 18th season of coaching HS basketball. It was a great way to end it.

We finished 15-4, but honestly could have been 18-1. One loss by 5 we were 6/18 from the line, in a loss by 2 we were 3/9, and in a loss by 4 we were 5/14. Ick.

The other loss was....well....ugly. Got blown by 25 (67-42) this past Monday because we, frankly, sucked. No discipline, got out hustled and outworked. But last night, we had an opportunity to play that team again. In two practices Wednesday and Thursday we put in a new defense and two new offenses, and last night beat them in overtime 42-40. In 18 years of coaching, it was one of the three most exciting games I've ever been involved with.

My 5-7 125 lb point guard told me before the game he wasn't going to let us lose. He delivered. Had 19 pts and held the kid on their team (who is 4 inches taller and 40 lbs heavier) to 8 pts when he had previously scored 23.

So....thought I'd brag a bit. I love basketball. Only 9 months until the beginning of November and next season.

Thanks for indulging my overt pride.

Want to come over to our school? Our basketball team is doing horribly right now...they are 0-6 in the league.

Sounds like you are a good coach, though. Congrats on the win.

agreed. theres nothing like a coach that actually works like hes out there with them. so many are bland blame mongers instead of part of the team.

well done.

Congrats, scaeagles! :) Sounds like those kids are very lucky to have you for their coach. Well done, indeed.

And those don't know how lucky they are that you coach basketball, rather than teach US Government. ;)

No pictures this time, NA. Sorry. Even if there were I might be afraid to post them.:)

Thanks for the kind words and congratulations. I am enthusiastic. I also dislike coaches who place blame. I certainly do let them know when they aren't doing what I require - I call them "expressions of displeasure" - but they know it is never personal. I never get mad at a kid for missing a shot (who wants to miss a shot?) or for turning the ball over or making a bad pass or whatever, only for a lack of discipline or not working as hard as I know they can. I also dislike coaches who don't understand that losing to a better team is nothing to be ashamed of. Win with class, lose with class.

And MBC, liberals can't coach. There is no such thing as equal playing time and some kids are just better at basketball than others. Liberals dont get that.;)

Cool, let the conservatives coach basketball while the liberals lead the country and we will all be better off as a result. :)

Kidding aside, sounds like you are giving them some great life lessons. Kudos to you.

A family of one of my players hosted a post season party today. Teams have always given me restaurant gift cards for usually $50 or so, but this team....embarrassed me. They gave me a $500 Best Buy gift card. Wow.
