Hello all !

Here is a google map of where (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=333+Fulton+Street,+San+Francisco,+CA+94102&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=15&ll=37.780755,-122.422285&spn=0.015094,0.043001&iwloc=addr) we're staying in SFO (Inn @ The Opera)

How close is this to the Tenderloin (that we've been told to stay away from - I've never ventured near the civic centre as yet).

Cheers,
Nervous Bear & Stoat

You're not in the bestest part of town or anything but it isn't horrible. You'e on the opposite of Civic Center from the Tenderloin. Keep in mind, though, that the Tenderloin really isn't that bad except maybe in the middle of the night. During the day it is fine, if obvious about its seedier side. I've been in the Tenderloin late at night many times and never felt endangered.

Sixth and Mission, however...

Here's a map (http://sfgate.com/traveler/acrobat/maps/1999/civic_map.pdf) of the area.

Where you are is not so bad, although you wouldn't want to leave anything in plain sight in your car. You're about a block away from the opera house complex. If you go up towards McAllister, Golden Gate, Eddy and Turk and head east a few blocks, you'll be in the thick of the Tenderloin. If you head west on these streets a half mile or so, you won't be in the Tenderloin. You'll just be in a dangerous neighborhood. If you go down to Grove and particularly Hayes and head west a few blocks, you'll be in a gentrified neighborhood with a lot of cool restaurants. Citizen Cake on Grove is good for eat-in and take-out desserts. If you keep heading west on these streets, you'll be in a bad neighborhood again. If you're coming back late from some outlying neighborhood, you'll probably want to take a cab back to your hotel rather than public transportation and walking.

LB, Inn at the Opera is okay, it's right across the street from the Opera House and then City Hall, as you make your way through Civic Center is gets seedy and loads of homeless, but in the day, as Alex says, it's fine. You're a few blocks from Hayes Valley (some good eating there) and you are about 10 minutes from me, how bad can that be I ask you???? :D

I can't wait for you to get here! Since you're so close, we might be able to dinner at Cafe Della Stelle, Italian in Hayes Valley, I've always been fond of it. But, in SF, so many choices!

Hey, you'll be pretty close to The Jazz Bistro (http://www.jazzbistrosf.com/) if that all interests you. Great little place.

Oh, I thought you wanted to visit Carol Doda's Breasts.

I actually saw Carol Doda perform in the early '80s. Big hair and manic as hell, she flew around the stage. She didn't throw off the boa and show the goods until she was halfway up on the killer piano. I believe she also kicked off her panties, which would have been illegal since the Condor sold alcohol.

After the Condor closed and became a sports bar, she owned/lent her name to a lingerie shop on Union Street. If you walked by, you would often see her standing around. I don't know if it's still there.

As far as visiting her breasts today, I believe they're being used to anchor the new Bay Bridge span.

I don't know if it's still there.I was curious (actually, I had to search for her as the name wasn't ringing any bells). It appears that Carol Doda's Champagne & Lace (http://www.unionstreetshop.com/pages/StorePages/carol_doda_s.html) store is still around. Maybe the Lash's can visit and provide a report.
