Umm, 1,000 pound chunks of stucco falling from the arches! Closed for at least 6 months. Bad news.

Not quite the PR they were looking for 2 weeks before the new Airbus lands.

Damn! That's pretty sad, but I'm glad no one was hurt.

Weird. I had lunch there not too long ago just before I flew off to Hawaii and took a Helicopter tour (http://starbulletin.com/2007/03/09/news/story01.html)....

Awww, when I read the thread title ... I thought it was closed permanently. Too bad.

I love the decor ... but the overpriced food is getting worse and worse ... so bad, in fact, that I've made a mental note never to go there again (or, if I must 'cause folks just have to .... to stick with liquid refreshment only).

I hope they fix it up, and reopen .... under new management.

(Hey, if it's such a fixer-upper .... it might not be a bad spot for the Lot Commune. Maybe they'd be willing to do a deal. Very groovy decor, interesting views, jetsetter jumping off point to swank spots of the world!)

Do you know I have NEVER eaten there? I really must put the re-open swanking on my calendar.

iSm speaks the truth in terms of quality. Though I haven't gone in a couple of years, each time it seems more expensive and less delicious. Even the drinks have moved from decent to just so-so.

However, I'd still like to go. I'm all for second-chances. With a re-vamp, they probably know this is a good time for them to strengthen their image and is a good chance for them to get new people and bring back those who haven't bothered - perhaps a renewal of their menu and various drinks?

They have food there?

Honestly, I've never considered going there for a good meal, as everything I've ever eaten there is eclipsed by the location, design and soundtrack.

I'm all for a re-opening swanking.

The last time I ate there (way back when), I loved the Duck Salad, hadn't heard the food had gone down hill. But then again, don't know many who have eaten there. I'm for a Swank meet-up, and keep my fingers crossed they still serve the Duck Salad!

Count me in. It's on my list of places I've never gone but always wanted to.

So when are the swankiest going to have a meet there?

Someone go as our canary-in-a-coal-mine, please. My experiences there have been progressively badder, and I won't go back without a positive report first.

Never been, always been curious. I can't see going to hang out at the airport though. Airports are usually the place of such unpleasantness.

Been a while since I've been there, but I've never had bad food or service.

It's awesome hanging out at the airport when you don't have to go through security and just watch the planes landing and taking off.

Never been, always been curious. I can't see going to hang out at the airport though. Airports are usually the place of such unpleasantness. But think about the pleasure of going knowing that you do not need to endure the usual airport unpleasantness!

I used to enjoy having lunch at The Proud Bird (http://www.theproudbird.com/) when I was calling on clients in the area. Not sure if it is still as good - it has been many years since I have been there.

Another, similar, restaurant is 94th Aero Squadron (http://www.the94thaerosquadron.com/VanNuys/index.html) at the Van Nuys Airport.

In looking at these restaurants' sites, I am amazed at how many of the Southern California restaurants (http://www.specialtyrestaurants.com/corporate/banquet_catering_corporate_restaurants.html#ca)of this company's that I have eaten at. All but three in California (and one of those three is in Berkeley).

(BTW: my dad is an aviation buff - hence the attraction for these.)

We were just talking about Encounter this weekend! (I had such a people-filled weekend that I don't know who the conversation was with.)

There's a newish restaurant at the Long Beach Airport (well, beside it) as well.
