I'm not sure if anyone's found/linked this before - but whilst doing some researching, I came across this funny little thing.

www.wikimapia.org

It's as though Google Earth and Wikipedia had a baby - and this is what it looks like. Go to just south of the Huntington Beach Pier to find some tasty waves (http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=33654776&x=-118004456&z=17&l=0&m=a&v=2).

I could spend days on this. Har har.

It didn't take off like they hoped but you might find this interesting as well: Paceopedia (http://www.placeopedia.com/). It is user supported and connected specific locations in Google Maps to appropriate articles in Wikipedia.

I've been going through the town of Vancouver, Washington, and labelling all the homes where I or family members used to live.

I'm sure somebody will find the little corner house labeled with "My great-grandmother used to live in this house. But she's dead now, so my uncle and his family live there." very helpful.

Oh, believe me, that is all too easy to do. First you look up your hometown, then you check out Disneyland, then famous cities, then obscure cities...

It's dangerous...

It doesn't seem to be working for me. All I get is the "Loading Map" page, then it hangs.

Yeah, it gets hung up a lot. The hybrid mode isn't working for me.

But I did find this place (http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=34259815&x=-118599215&z=19&l=0&m=a&v=2)

Interesting, not exactly next door, but not too far either. I found this place (http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=34213923&x=-118587466&z=19&l=0&m=h&v=2).

I also noticed that the DLR entries are rather sparse. Perhaps we should take it upon ourselves to spruce them up. I hear the AP lounge has new carpet for example....

I don't know, I could see the real estate market seizing onto it if it lasts a while and address have a chance accumulate a history of entries.

I labeled the house I used to live in "Just don't dig up that lump next to the garage" :D

That's cool! Yes, I found my house, the house I use to live in, and then Disneyland. I noticed one of the entries was marked with a "Garden Groove". Very funny.

Actually, this being Vantucky and all there's not really much that's noteworthy, so your previous haunts could become something like tourist attractions. It'd be like The Clark County Map of The Stars.

At least people will now know where the IGA on St. Johns is.

I went and labeled my place of work (the photo is over two years old and doesn't show the expansion). In doing so I noticed that almost nothing in my town is labeled. As I've worked for the Local History dept, I could spend a lot of time working on this. Too bad I've got so many other things to do. I also found out that my town has no wikipedia entries...

Those Rosemere locations (Grandma's House, etc.) wouldn't be yours, would they? I used to live in the house at the corner of 29th and U, just kitty corner to Grandma! Small world, huh? (Congrats on surviving Rosemere, by the way. That's a feat in and of itself.)

Yes.

I don't think any congratulations are in order. Growing up there it didn't seem all that bad. But it is now going on 15 years since I lived there. When did you live there (my grandparents just moved to Arizona from there about a year ago?

I think I'll go put a notice on the bridge where SR500 goes over Burnt Bridge Creek (just east of St. Johns) telling the story of the time my sister caused neighborhood wide panic during its construction.
