View Full Version : Vegimite- an acquired taste! [and Lashes in SD]

Ok, so I tried the Vegimite that Lashbear gave me. I did a little research on it first.

It's made from brewer's yeast spent after the Beer manufacturing prossess.
It came from beer, how bad could it be? The Men Down Under romanticized it. It sounded good to me!

I found a recipe on the Kraft website. Toasted bread, with butter, spread Vegimite on thin (Rob said use sparingly!), then add avocado.

I'll try anything once, I've had Bar-B-que Rattlesnake (tastes just like chicken-really!), chocolate covered ants, snails, squid, tripe, and sushi. I'll try anything once just to say I have. Now I can say I tried vegimite.

But if anything I have ever eaten tasted like it shouldn't be eaten, it was that. I like things spicy, salty, pungent, you name it. I've had stinky cheese that tasted like sweat socks. But this made me come up with a new name for it because of how I felt after I ate it:

Vomite ( I Mite Vomit)

Am I sorry I tried it? Not at all. It was worth the experience. Thanks again to Rob and Greg! I know millions of people must enjoy it (though I can't imagine how) but it's a taste that's not for me. Please don't let it stop you from trying it.

So, did you try it? What did you think? Inquiring taste buds want to know!

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:

Vegemite should NOT be used with Avocado under any circumstances.... anymore than Sardines should be served with Strawberry Ice-cream

I can't think of anything more disgusting myself, and I'm really sorry you did this. THe taste by itself should be OK - but Avocado with it is just wrong.

I am writing to Kraft to complain that they are creating negative relations with overseas customers. Seriously. :(

If you DO want to use it with something, I highly recommend spreading it (thinly) on ThinKrisps™ They seem to be made for each other !!!!!. :snap:

Actually, the taste with avacado wasn't too bad. It truley was the flavor and odor of the Vegimite it's self that was the turn-off for me. But I'm sure there would have been a better complement to the flavor than avacado.

Perhaps it was my dad's beer and wine making days making days, or the fact that I use yeast in bread making and am familiar with it as an ingredient that shouldn't be consumed by itself. Whatever the cause, I still ate the whole plate of toast to give it a fair try. It wasn't so bad that I couldn't eat it, but bad enough that I said to myself "Well, there's something I never have to do again". And I did feel sick afterwards.

Perhaps I should have gotten some ideas from you first, huh? My mistake. And again I do appreciate that you gave me the chance to experience something I've been curious about all these years!

So, take heed from Lashbear every one! Spread it [very] thinly on ThinCrisps!

And please post your experiences here!

Well, a quartet of folks tried it on official LashPair-supplied crackers during dinner at the Sunday Meat ... so perhaps they'll chime in.

I tried it once, back in 2002 ... and I never need to go there again.

I tried it the morning after the Friday night meet-up at the Lost Bar.

I wasn't too hung over or anything and toasted a couple of slices of sourdough bread, put some butter on top, and then opened the miniscule packet Lashbear gave me the night before. It smelled somewhat, uh, "earthy" I guess you would say.

Undaunted, I scooped out a tiny bit and spread it (thinly) over a bite-size corner of the toast. It wasn't too bad, really. It just tastes vaguely of wood rot and locker rooms. I went through half the packet like this - putting on just enough for the next bite - before I broke down and got out the strawberry preserves.

I then did a Wikipedia search for Vegemite and discovered the history of the stuff, a little about how it's made, and some rather amusing Pop Culture references & lingo. The term "drilling for Vegemite" was especially amusing and I was very glad I hadn't read that before trying it.

Last Sunday, I was applying sunscreen to myself at The Hub at DL and two couples from Australia were getting their pictures taken in front of the Walt statue and castle. They looked to be youngish middle age and very boisterous. I, of course, asked where they were from and started chating with them and one of the ladies said she was a Mousketeer in her youth in Australia. Like on Telly and everything. Said her name was Sheila (but don't they all?).

I mentioned my recent introduction to Vegemite and Sheila's husband, Richard, made a horrible face and proclaimed the stuff to be somewhat awful (in his own colorful way). They mentioned it being a beer product and I replied I would rather have the real stuff, to which they gleefully concurred. Then they asked where the beer was and I had to give them the sad news about having to go across the Esplanade for that. They were shocked that no alcohol was served at DL! I mentioned Club 33 and it's severe exclusivity and Richard replied that Sheila "has her ways" of getting whatever and wherever she wants.

As they took off looking for the Ruddy Teacups, I mentioned that they should return at noon to meet one or two of their hemispherical bretherin but they only sounded half-hearted on the idea and I did not see them at the Mega-Meat. Although I did wave to them later when they passed me going the opposite direction on the Casey Jr. Train while I was on a Storybook boat. God only knows what their stories will be of me when they return to the Outback.

I suppose this has turned from simple Vegemite discussion to a full-fledged Aussie-palooza.

I tried vegimite in the 80's and don't care to relive it again, but thanks for the offer. What I found amusing was all the Australians I met were as turned off by peanut butter as I was by their veimite.

I miss the meat pies and sausage rolls though! Nothing like stopping in a billabong for good old meat pie!!

I don't know if I'd be brave enough to try vegemite. And I would never put any exotic meats in my mouth (go ahead, please joke for me. I'm stale today). I'm really the most pickiest eater EVER. I almost don't like anything that doesn't come from a Starbucks, gas station or convenience store, and that's pretty icky in and of itself. Beef jerkey & power bars, we love thee.

Having said that, I like icky things like caviar & salmon roe, but I feel guilty eating it as it pops on my tongue (more innuendo-laden material for you all to enjoy). ;)

Everytime I think of vegemite, I think of it being in sandwich form ala the Men At Work lyrics. :)

Now, first off, I was happy to meet Capt. Jack. Ponine was quite more relaxed than the last time we met {when she was event co-ordinator extraordinaire at Comic-Con} and it was nice to spend time with her in this state.

The Boys shared with us their adventures so far in San Diego. The Gaslamp, the Del, and Mt. Helix. They found these places with their Fisher Price map. :D Their excitement over my little city really was good to see. Living here can take the shine off sometimes.

Tomorrow Ponine heads off with them to TJ. I wonder if they'll take a picture on a donkey? Hmm....

1. The fact that someone has taken the effort to enjoy Vegemite, or

Hey, Lash, where the heck are you? How was your trip down to TJ? I was downtown earlier but I figured you were still across the border {I was there between 12:30 to about 2}.

I saw some things I thought you might like~ have you been to Seaport Village yet? Well, agh, I don't know if I can esplain' it right but at the Hyatt they have a bar/place on a high floor that is the toast of the town to go up and have a drink or at least a look. I can find out more if you are interested.

Have you done Seaport yet? Totally within walking distance of your place. I also checked at Arts Tix for discount Triple Espresso tickets but none. AAA does give one, though.

If you do Seaport and walk along Harbor Drive, there is also the Midway, the floating aircraft carrier museum.

Man, we went walking all over this afternoon {instead of running} and it was windy. Very much so.

Hope to see you guys soon, if not Saturday {oh, and too bad about the shortage of Vegemite, you are really going to have to hold on to that to keep you until you get home.....}

March 12, 2007

After a stressful and hectic morning, at least on my part, Lashbear, Lashstoat, and Ponine boarded a tour bus to take them to picturesque Tijuana, Mexico.
What we didn’t know, is that we were boarding a bus, to pick up other people, to take us to another bus. So with that in mind, we’ll skip over the first hour of the adventure and let you imagine it for yourselves.

Once we boarded the OFFICIAL bus, we were treated to meeting our driver whom we decided should be affectionately called Uncle Manny.
Uncle Manny was a bit unsure of how his microphone dealt with feedback, so we were treated to a good five, to ten minutes of feedback noise that made us all crazy. Yes, I exaggerate, but trust me, it felt even longer.
Then once we were on the freeway, Uncle Manny told all about what time we had to be back on the bus, and what we could and couldn’t bring back, but, in a voice so quiet that even over his microphone, and the speakers amplifying his voice you had to strain to hear him, and even then only caught half of it.
Okay………… that was… something about no ammunition or guns, he said no knives like three times… and something about an amount liquor per person, but he said that we could each have a bottle..and no live animals. Is that what everyone else heard?

Uncle Manny drove us across the border, and took us on a mini tour to our off load point, but I didn’t hear most of what he was telling us about the river since, again, you couldn’t hear him.

We left the bus, and headed into shopping nirvana. Or something similar. Greg was the first one to get reeled into a store. Eventually we followed him. I think they were trying to convince Rob that he needed a leather coat or some such silliness. Or a poncho that resembled the Mexican Flag. Which he did actually try on. Luckily, he bought neither.
Both men were enlightened to the experience that is Ave Revolution very quickly. People begging you to come into their stores, asking them to come look at stuff they didnt need.... etc. I think Greg was even asked if he wanted to sit on a Jacka$$. Which made us all laugh.
They found some tequila that was to their liking, and they found kitschy souvenirs for the folks back home……..
And they got coffee from a Mexican Burger King!!!! Tres swank! ;)

We did not stop for lunch till around 12:30 at which point we ate at once of the restaurants that Uncle Manny recommended on the drive in. As we stood on the sidewalk debating where to go, the man standing outside looked at Rob and said “margaritas – two for one”! Well that was it.

We over ordered, two combinations, guacamole, and jalapeńo surprise (poppers). The men each ordered a margarita, then after sampling the jalapeńo surprise, ordered another.
Lunch was finished, mariachis sang to us, and we were stuffed. When I returned from ladies room I found that they had ordered shots of tequila! Okay okay, they couldn’t leave TJ without a shot… so I grant them that.
Rob and I taught Greg the finer points of drinking a tequila shot, and then when finished they needed a margarita chaser. ...Let's see... thats one shot and three margaritas in one sitting.

We did a few more shops….Rob needed to buy a Frida bag. Bless him. With no idea of who she was, he needed a hot pink meican shopping bag for a friend back home. We then got our pic taken with a ‘zedonk’ after I begged, and then we headed for the bus.

Alas! We found the bus at 30+ minutes before our scheduled time, and he was ready to go!!!!
So when checked in, and I went onto the bus with our many treasures, and they went to find another bottle of tequila. Beucase at the first store we only bought one, we were allowed one per. (Hell, they should have bought two more... I didnt buy any)

We then got to experience walking through customs at the border, without very long lines and without very many people waiting around. And without hassles I might add. Really, not a true representation.

We had a nice bus ride back to the hotel, and made it safe and sound.
They did invite me to the room to test out the new tequila that was just purchased, mixed with the margarita mix they had in the room. (They had previously been using vodka!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Everyone enjoyed a nice relaxing margarita, and then I left them to their peace and quiet.

Well, we may not have shared Vegemite with the Lash's, but it seems we may have something else: Tori and I have horrid colds, and Bobbie is starting to feel a little ill as well. If we start start in with any Aussi lingo, we'll know where they came from.;)

It was worth it- meeting the Bear and Stoat was too much fun!:snap:

We're still under the statutory limit of 16 Lash Threads per month, so I don't see why we are discussing their San Diego adventures in the thread devoted to talking about their vegemite.

It's too late now, but i expect no less than 3 NorCal Lash threads for their San Francisco-based adventures.

Spent a lovely day with the Lashes at Belmont Park. MouseWife and family were there for a bit. Then Ponine & son and Capt. Jack joined for the rest of the day. Much fun was had by all. More later and photos, ten times through on the Big Dipper has got me beat.

Only 10 times on the Dipper? Wow, lightweights ;)

Just kidding - I hate those Morgan trains to all hell, and they make things even worse by having an original lead car in the museum for the ride.

What's really fun to try the next time you ride that ride, is to see if you can scare the people at the Jack in the Box across the street (I can).

Just to get Coaster Geeky for CoasterMatt for a minute...

The lead car in the museum made me really sad that I wasn't riding the coaster "as it was" so to speak. The new cars are very narrow in the hip/butt region (having sub-divided seats) and I again had to be stapled in, owing to my (moderate, in my opinion) girth.

The original bench style seats looked red-leather-sexy, padded, luxurious and bouncy, and I would have loved to ride in one.

BTW: the ride was quite rogh front and back, but the dead middle of the car was quite a smooth ride.

BBTW: I totally pwn the Tilt-A-Whirl. Yes, I am the carriage spinning champ of the world on that ride. Ask Ponine & son.

BBBTW: I will start another thread for the Adventures of Us starting with the trip tomorrow up to Pismo. I may be on dial-up for that , so no pics.

*hee hee* I don't know what the Hubster is doing. Probably telling me my hair looked a fright {that is what happens when you wear a baseball cap most of the time}.

I only rode the coaster once. It was enough! For me.

I have to say, and my family agrees, these Aussies are the nicest and most fun fellows we have ever had the pleasure to meet. Positive spin all around and it sure is lifting to be around that attitude. Will surely miss them.

And, look what a nice thing they have done, brought together quite a few of us that may have not met otherwise.

I wanted to thank katiesue, Ponine & Son, and Capt. Jack for sharing their time with us. It was really fun. :snap:

Oh, Lashbear, the museum, I am glad you went inside {well, a store/museum}. I agree about the old car, it was a beaut. I am sure you saw the old pictures, from the opening in 1925 and then the reopening, dah, when it was. :D

I need to find info on when a local radiostation promised a car to whomever would stay on the coaster the longest. I can't remember how long it was in the end but it was a long time. I think it went so much longer than expected that they gave away more than one car.

{oh, and to make this thread relevant...Thanks for the Vegemite!! :D }

Ah, so you, the Hubster and myself did one run. We are not alone.

Ponine, how about your son? Did he ride it? More than once?

I was torn. He did look sad, and very bored, but some of the other zedonks, and zonys were much more so. If he was going to stand out in the sun and look ridiculous, the least I could do was make sure he got fed this week.

Ponine, how about your son? Did he ride it? More than once?

I believe that he ended up riding five times, by his count. I knew that whatever the guys did he would try.
The only down spot in his day, other than me not giving him $100 to play carnie games, was the Chaos ride.
We're not talking about it. I didnt like it either.

The highlight? As previously stated, "Lashbear is KING of the Tilt-a-Whirl" !!!!! My son will be eternally grateful, and NO ONE will ever surpass the memory of Lashbear.:snap:

True, I bet the zedonk that gets the shots gets better treatment.

Five times? Wow! *visible mojo for the Boy*

Chaos...yikes, avoid at all cost....

Oh, I don't think the memory of the Lashes' will fade any time soon.

Real is relative.
Was it a flesh and blood animal, yes. We pet him, he was alive and breathing, or at least a very good animatronic.

Were the stripes real? Real shoe polish or paint yes, but they did not naturally occur on this particular animal.

Oh shush!!!
I didnt include the highlight of wandering OFF the main path and seeing a dead rat!

Oh.. and before I forget! Lashbear wanted to make sure that I mentioned in his opinion they were very weak margaritas.
I think we just had so much food, it would have taken many more margaritas to impair their judgement.

Taking this thread back on topic for a brief moment, I met a family from Australia today. Not surprisingly, they were a jovial, pleasant lot. I featured their kids in my Kodak show, and at the end, I asked the three children (about 4, 6 and 8 years old) if, in fact, they liked Vegemite. "We LOVE it!" the oldest exclaimed, and the littlest informed me,"we had it for breakfast today." So, there you go. I let them know I had tried it and was slowly developing a taste for it.

To derail with a couple quick CoasterMatt Ultra Geek thoughts...

The Chaos at Belmont Park is run so piss poorly, it's next to impossible to get a good flipping ride - that isn't a great ride anyway, but it's really not the ride's fault (although, you'll be happy to note, that model was recalled and retrofitted after a couple model wide "uhohs")

For those non enthusiasts - PLEASE, PLEASE, don't judge the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk's Giant Dipper by the Belmont Park's Giant Dipper - THEY ARE NOT THE SAME RIDES!!!!
SCBB's Giant Dipper is a spectacularly well maintained (they have a crew walking the track and doing inspections every two hours, while the ride is running), very fun, thrilling coaster.

Belmont Park's Giant Dipper is a good trip to the chiropractic clinic :)

Both Giant Dippers run Morgan Manufacturing trains, but the ones at Santa Cruz have comfier seating, and are better suited to the track design.

This I can vouch for, yesterday I felt like I'd been run over by a mac truck.

Still was one of the funnest days in a very long time. Lash is the king of the tilt-o-whirl that I can vouch for. And the look on Stoats face when he realized Chaos would spin him upside down, and we were already strapped in starting the ride - priceless.

Next time we'll all suit up and ride the waves, that thing looked cool.
