Any fans of Spike Jones & The City Slickers, here? I have loved their unique brand of musical humor for a long time. What is amazing is that they could play anything put in front of them and that all of them were actually excellent musicians. Not only that but when doing their funny songs, no sound was out of place musically-it all fit in.

Ya dig Hep'Cats and Kittens?

Spike Jones was one of my first loves. I can still remember listening to him for the very first time -- it was "My Old Flame" and I was about four years old. Mind altering good stuff.

Tref sez, checkitout.

Though HTHBellcaptain is scarce around here these days, I know that Spike Jones is one of his favorites, and thanks to that, one of mine too.

Hello? You don't say. You don't say! You don't say...
Who was it?
He didn't say!

Did you know that Joel Grey (father of Jennifer Grey) is the son of Mickey Katz, the "glugger" for the Spike Jones Band? In an interview on Downstage Center Joel went into his dad's old bit without missing a beat!

Count me in, too. I just watched a couple of hours of old Spike Jones tv appearances last week.

I don't know who you're talking about so I'm in the "no" column.

For those of you who don not know who Spike Jones is. You owe yourself to go investigate him. Without even investigating him if you remember Disney short "Symphony Hour" that is pretty much what Spike Jones did, but with a little mroe style and flair and everything flowed well without becoming a cacophony.

Beforehand do a study of music from the Big Band era of the late 30's and 40's because that is most of the material Spike Jones would lampoon (along with familiar classical pieces).

Spike Jones' "Der Fuehrer's Face" was turned into a Disney short subject so you may have seen that if you have the Treasures DVD it appears on but I think it can also be found on youtube...at least I have seen it there in the past.

Ahh, we did a Disney Oscar Shorts screening not too long ago, during which we saw "Der Fuehrer's Face." Good schtuff.

I don't listen to any music so that's ok. I'll just go on being unfamiliar with Spike Jones (odds are that if I heard things I'd recognize them, I just don't have a name attached to them).

Also, is there a reason, beyond a stylistic choice, that you shout everything?

BDBopper
04-10-2007, 07:24 PM
just a style choice and I can read it better afterwards. If you prefer I'll just keep it regular. I didn't think I was shouting.

I THOUGHT THIS WAS SHOUTING

Ah HA! Thos of us with correctable vision wouldn't even think that it might be able to see if the text is bold. Thank you for "opening our eyes".

ALL CAPS IS SHOUTING. Bold is dramatizing. And Spike Jones is hot stuff. (I'm not familiar with a lot of it, but I like a lot the stuff I know.)

oh, and small text is an aside.

BDBopper

Thank you for the explanation. I will refrain from bolding my text here. The last thing I want to do is send people the wrong signal. Sorry about that.

Alex

Don't change just because of me. I was just curious. Personally I find bold text in large quantities harder to read (but then I also prefer white fonts on black backgrounds).

No, no BDBopper ... no need to mask your style. Bold is in no way frowned upon.

Avoiding constant posting in ALL CAPS is, as far as I know, the only netiquette widely practiced on message boards. Here on the LoT, we value free expression ... so if someone wants to shout once in a while, they are free to express themselves loudly.

We are also free to express ourselves Boldly if we're feeling bold.

Well, I think it is very helpful to BD if he posts in bold since, as he posted in his intro thread, he's legally blind. So, whatever works is fine. We old people can relate in a way....right?

blueerica
04-10-2007, 09:56 PM
Ahh, I didn't even realize he was legally blind after he posted about it being easier to see afterward. ;)

At any rate, didn't bother me a bit. Bold Away!

I don't know who Spike Jones is either. :( However, I can name all 4 members of the now-defunct band N*SYNC, and that's just sinful. Justin, JC, Joey & Chris, we miss thee.

Okay, I know that Disney short you mentioned, BDBopper! Whew! I feel better!! I'll need to check Spike Jones out. I thought this thread was about "Spike Jonze" at first. I was going to contribute with the informative post that "he's now hooking up with Drew Barrymore". If it's not in Star or Us Weekly, I'm out of the loop. :p

Oh, and I *heart* your bold font. I've been posting in georgia font since way back when. I do everything in georgia font, except birthday posts, which I do in size ginormous text, and delightful pastels. I look like I'm screeching birthday joy, which, in essence, I am. It's my style. :)

Any actor will tell you that comedy is harder than drama. Comedy is always best when done straight. What I've always loved about Spike Jones is that while the arrangements were funny and the performances were funny the Musicianshipwas straightforward and incredible.

First and formost this was an incredible band! What Spike and his arrangers did was unique and original and has never been duplicated, although it paved the way for Weird Al.

see you at the zoo

Not a big N*Sync fan at all...they are/were just not my style of music. I'm more of a retro kind of guy which is why I love it here...even thought I've only been at LoT for a few days.

I had forgotten there was someone in the biz going by Spike Jonze.

I heart Birthdays and Birthday posts. Some people look down on them but to me they are a big deal. I was born physically challenged, legally blind, and without a nose to speak of (just two holes in the middle of my face). The Doctors told my parents that I would not live past six months but if I did I would be in a vegetative state. But here I am after 23 and a half years still going strong. Each day is a blessing and a new gift but each birthday is special to me. So if I overhype someone's birthday that's why-I forget that some people don't consider it a special occasion like I do.

BTW: I love your avatar it is so cute! And pastel colors rock!

Oh back on topic-Bang! Bang! Bang! Glug! Burp! Ding! Aoooga! LOL ;)

Good for you BD! Noses are over-rated anyway. If not for sun-glasses they would have been discontinued a long time ago. A belated happy birthday to you and a belated welcome to the board.

You will see that I do have a nose thanks to plastic surgery over the years. However I have no sense of smell. And that can be both a blessing and a curse at the same time.

PS: Isn't it funny how this thread has gotten way off track? LOL

LOLOL!! I had the Justin marionette!! My brother's now ex-girlfriend bought it for me!! She also gave my brother the Britney doll dressed in Oops! I Did It Again vinyl red camel toe regalia!! I think she also came with the not-so-innocent schoolgirl outfit, too.

N*SYNC fun fact: I thought Lance was just the dreamiest. Justin really never did it for me back then. I feel so bad saying this, but he always looked like he had a pack of ramen noodles on his head. :( Now he's just super sexy!

N*SYNC fun fact deaux: As soon as I received the Justin marionette, I had to "peak down his tiny dolly jeans". If I recall correctly, didn't he have painted-on tighty whities with absolutely no package? Why they made him a eunich I'll never know. Probably for pervs like me that molest dolls 5 seconds into new ownership. :p

I'm so sorry for the derail. If I discover any Spike Jones fun facts, I'll make sure to post them! :)

Well here's a fun fact! Before forming his own band Spike Jones, was the percussionist in the orchestra that played on Bing Crosby's "White Christmas"!

And now you know - Cause knowledge is power! :)

Oh BDBopper, I'm so sorry you weren't here during our inaugural months ... when most of us posted strictly in hip cat / beatnik lingo.

That was so much fun (if exhausting). Maybe we should renew the practice for a week surrounding LoTverssary each January!
