For no apparent reason, I had the old children's song "Aloutte" stuck in my head today. Singing it all day, it occurred to me that I have absolutely no idea what the lyrics mean. I know a little bit of French, but, save for a few articles and such, nothing in Alouette is familiar to me.

So I looked up the lyrics and used Google to translate them:

Lark, nice lark
Lark, I will pluck you.
I will pluck your head
I will pluck your head
And your head and your head
Lark, nice lark
Lark, I will pluck you

Lark, nice lark
Lark, I will pluck you.
I will pluck your nose
I will pluck your nose
And your nose and your nose
Lark, nice lark
Lark, I will pluck you

Lark, nice lark
Lark, I will pluck you.
I will pluck your eyes
I will pluck your eyes
And your eyes and your eyes
Lark, nice lark
Lark, I will pluck you

etc. (continuing with neck, wing, back, legs, and tail)

Wow. Who knew a children's song was so violent. Yikes!

I took French in HS and learned this long ago. I remember the lyrics, and if I recall it is actually not a children's song, it is an old song sung by loggers.

After learning what the lyrics meant I used to laugh when I'd see the old Gilligan's Island when Ginger was singing it in a seductive manner.

Now that song is stuck in my head! Most children's songs/nursery rhymes has gross 0rigins. Like Ring Around the Rosies is a warning about the plague.

Ring around the rosies (red circular shaped rash)
Pocket full of posies (to try and cover up the smell)
Ashes, ashes (you have to burn everything)
We all fall down (everyone dies)

According to Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/language/literary/rosie.htm) that's a myth.

They're all like that!

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary ("bloody" Mary Tudor)
How does your garden grow? (garden=cemetaries, with growing amounts of protestant martyrs in them)
With silver bells and cockle shells (silver bells=thumbscrews which literally screwed your thumb and crushed it, cockle shells=a genital torture device)
And pretty maids all in a row (maids=Maiden, a kind of guillotine!)

Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure -

"Put the in the Iron Maiden" (a torture device)
(Excellent!)
"Execute them!"
(Bogus.)

I hear that most Fairy Tails are based on some sort of (at the time) current news. They cleaned them up some what, but are still pretty graffic and scary for children. The Grimm Bros. are a fine example.

Tout va mieux en français. Everything sounds better in French.

It's just a fact, Jacques.

^ That's the only thing the Matrix sequels got right.
