I have mixed feelings about Tammy Faye. I despised what she and her ex husband Jim Bakker did as televangelists, but I have come to respect—if not admire—the person she has become after leaving that situation.

I will say I was saddened to hear she posted this on her blog (http://www.tammyfaye.com/note20070508.htm)* yesterday:The doctors have stopped trying to treat the cancer and so now it's up to God and my faith.
<snip>
I am down weight wise to 65 pounds, and look like a scarecrow. I need God's miracle to swallow.I heard on the news that she previously had colon cancer and thought it was cured, but now it seems to have spread to her lungs. And for what it's worth, Wikipedia corroborates that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammy_Faye_Bakker#Cancer).

* As of this writing, that site seems to be going down. Hopefully it will return soon.

I have always had a soft spot for Tammy Faye.

As was once said, Anybody who had a hand in designing the Heritage USA amusement park can not be all bad. That place was far-out.

Fun fact: a close relative bought part of Heritage USA when the Bakkers went down. Specifically, they bought the television production facilities. They sold it probably 10 years ago.

We visited (I'm thinking it was '93) and boy, talk about spooky. It was then a 3/4-abandoned amusement park. Spookiest part: the construction equipment was just sitting around the half-finished buildings. We walked around, had lunch at the on-site hotel. The closest comparison is the Opryland Hotel in Nashville.

I saw Tammy a couple of years ago at a book signing in West Hollywood, and she was one of the warmest and motherly people in the room.. I had figure out which one was her, there were a bunch of drag queens there..

She loves the gays...

Keep ya head up Tammy!

I actually bought a copy of her autobiography at one of those outlet mall remainder book stores. It was signed.

I guess it's time to drag out my copy of the TV movie "Fall From Grace" starring Bernadette Peters as Tammy Faye and Kevin Spacey as Jim...

Lights, camera, silence on the set
Tape rolling, 3-2-1-action

Welcome to the church of Suicidal
We'll have a service and wonderful recital
But before we go on, there's something I must mention
An important message I must bring to your attention
I was in meditation and prayer last night
I was awakened by a shining bright light
Over head, a glorious spirit
He gave me a message and you all need to hear it
"Send me your money", that's what he said
He said to "Send me your money"

Now if you can only send a dollar or two
There aint a hell of alot I can do for you
But, if you want to see heaven's door
Make a check out for five hundred or more
"Send me your money", do you here what I'm saying?
"Send me your money"

Now give me some bass, um yea that's how he likes it
Now give me some silence, for all you sinners
Now give me some bass, yea that was funky
Now take them on home Brother Clark, send me your ...money

Here comes another con hiding behind a collar
His only god is the almighty dollar
He aint no prophet, he aint no healer
He's just a two bit goddamn money stealer
Send me your money
Send it, you got to send it
Send me your money
You hear what I'm saying?
Send it, send it
Send me your money

Now how much you give is your own choice
But to me it's the difference between a Porsche and a Rolls
Royce
I want you to make it hurt when you dig into your pocket
I want you to make it hurt!
We'll take cash, we'll take checks
We'll take credit cards, we'll take jewelry
We'll take your momma's dentures if they got gold in them

So who's gonna be the next king of the fakers
Who's gonna take the place of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker?
See my momma, she didn't raise no fool
Cause you can't put a price on a miracle
Amen

Well, like SzczerbiakManiac, I sure laughed at and was disgusted by what the Bakers did, but have got nothing but warm feelings for Tammy after all these years. She's a pull herself up by the bootstraps kind of woman and I admire that. She's been loads of fun to watch and listen to over the years, she's left a rich legacy for drag queens everywhere. Whatever karma she's working out is pretty tough, so Godspeed Tammy Faye, you won't be hard to pick out of the heavenly line up, bring lots of false eyelashes with you.

No, I still come as close to hating her as I'm capable of hating someone who hasn't directly killed people for pleasure.

If there is a god and it lets her in, then that whole heaven is a sham not worth wanting.

Let's talk within Tammy Faye's belief system. Assuming she's still Protestant Christian ...

Tammy Faye knows this verse from 1 John "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Sin publicly, repent and repay publicly, as in 2 Samuel 12: 13-15. I haven't followed Tammy Faye since her public downfall so I don't know if she's done this but her repetence would have to be to God and also to those people she harmed.

If Tammy Faye genuinely repents of her sins against God, then she is forgiven and will go to Heaven.

Within her belief system I have no doubt she believes she is going to heaven. By some odd coincidence, almost everybody who believes in heaven believes they'll end up there. I'm sure that among Hitler's last thoughts (if he held any real belief in heaven) was "Jesus, here I come..."

(While I consider Tammy Faye to be a significant player in one of the most malignant American social movements of the last half-century I am not comparing her to Hitler, just saying that no matter how bad the crimes the criminals generally think they're on God's good side. That is the amazing flexibility of belief.)

Oh, Alex. You played the Hitler card. Now I can't argue with you.

And I was going to ask you for data and everything. Oh, well.

What is there to argue? We agree she believes she is going to heaven.

I am of the opinion that if she is, it isn't a heaven worth desiring for a heaven so easy to get into already exists here on earth. I'm sure you'll agree that I am of that opinion.

So, what is there to argue?
