While searching for a particular image, I ran across a plethora of Hello Kitty items. Is there some contest that I am unaware of to see who can come up with the most ridiculous Hello Kitty item?

I like some of this stuff, actually.

I saw the toaster and other items in the line at Target. I wanted the personal water cooler. I didn't get it, though. Ooo, or the waffle maker!

The camera is cute and the muffler piece, aw, what will they think of?

I am in need of a trailer hitch cover.....

But heck, I won't put anything like that on my car. Every freakin' Mickey head I put on my car gets stolen. I already want to kill for that. {oo, do kill and hello kitty go together?}

Meet Christine Yano (http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:qobF1VdirN0J:www.anthropology.hawai i.edu/faculty/yano/+anthropology+of+Hello+Kitty&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us), Associate Professor of Anthropology, Univ. of Hawaii at Manoa. Prof. Yano studies Hello Kitty, among other things.

I am interested in the topic of "cute culture" in Japan, in particular as a consumer item through the business practices and goods of Sanrio (e.g. Hello Kitty). These goods, sold to children and young adult females throughout Japan, package cuteness and its cultural values as an aesthetic, a set of morals, and a prescription for action (or passive inaction). My focus is on Hello Kitty as a global product, and I have been conducting surveys in Honolulu on the consumption of these goods. I have also conducted interviews at corporate headquarters in Tokyo and South San Francisco, investigating some of the marketing strategies that have enabled global sales. My research is further enabled by the company's website, which has availed me of hundreds of pages of company literature of their business practices and goods, as well as access to chat rooms of Hello Kitty fans. Through these internet links, I have conducted on-line interviews with fans. I believe that cuteness provides a fertile ground for exploring issues of gender and power through global consumer culture.

When I was a kid, I had a few Hello Kitty things I was given as gifts (by people who obviously didn't know me very well) and as far as I know at that time it was very very uncool. It was dorky stuff you bought at the drugstore. When did it become popular here?

Capt Jack
05-30-2007, 11:22 AM
dunno. I'll ask the folks at the local 'Hello Kitty" store. (oh, how I wish I was kidding)

You rang? :D

Why yes, Wendybeth, I am one of....them. The ones who come out at night, ripe with kitty lust and the neverending quest to turn the whole world into a brighter & pinker place. When the world spins, and only spins, on a rhinestone-encrusted axis, our job will be done. Until then, we'll continue to force our will upon you & spring that darling Kitty at you in all shapes and forms. :D

Such as the personal massager.

Puh-leeze! Like some of you wouldn't masturbate with the Hello Kitty personal massager? C'mon. I know some of your sins and they ain't pretty. And you know it, too. ;) :p

Regardless, it would have earned you a playground smackdown, had you displayed it publicly.

I love the Twin Stars! I am so happy they are coming back. And Bazu Bazu. I looooove him. I love the Hello Kitty store still; though now I see my my mom rarely bought me stuff from there (DANG it's expensive). I still have a super cool pencil box with the Twin Stars. I had an even cooler one with buttons that opened up different compartments and had a book holder too (did anyone else have that??)

I wonder if i can get Mr. S to go in there. I did get him to go into Sephora... :evil: I think that's my next mission.

Every freakin' Mickey head I put on my car gets stolen. I already want to kill for that. {oo, do kill and hello kitty go together?}We have a Mickey silhouette trailer hitch cover. I bought a big ol' beefy lock (a standard trailer lock) to make sure I didn't loose it (had it about three years now). Unfortunately, I am afraid that Susan will break the darn thing off from backing into things.
Dude, the upside down house is awesome!Yeah, I kinda dug on that too. I wonder what it looks like on the inside.

Have you seen the Sanrio amusement park? They have a Sanrio Family Boat Ride (http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=112015#112015)
If you register at Theme Park Review, they have video of the ride - freakin' hilarious stuff.

And if you have that Hello Kitty "Personal Massager" - then you'll want to get an appropriately discrete case for it:

I do want this. Or else the one that says 'Escape' or 'Ford' and lights up.

I didn't know you could lock it on!!! Well, this makes a big difference.

{totally ignoring the kitty massager talk...}

I do want this.I bought it as few years back from Charming Shoppe (http://www.charmingshoppe.com). I did a quite search but did not see anything there now. I did find one on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LAST-Licensed-MICKEY-MOUSE-TOW-TRAILER-HITCH-PLUG-COVER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33653QQihZ012QQit emZ220117202788QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW), but there are other flavors (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=mickey+trailer+hitch+cover&category0=) there as well.

I also can't remember the size of our hitch....

Thank you for your help. :)

{I really really still want one...I think my car is going to become a Mickey Mobile....}

I work with a girl who loves Hello Kitty anything. She'd love this thread.

I loved the upside down house.

I've bought a HK massager for someone. She tells me it's not a good idea to actually use it.

Pink overload!!! Run away!!!! You are missing the HK Darth Vader pic. It is a photoshop but it's still crazy.

As a kid, I loved to go to Indonesia because we stayed there for at least a month AND my thrill in life was to get school supplies for the following year.

I had the same pencil boxes of which you speak. It's AWESOME! I hated when they broke and either:
1) the item/drawer would never stay closed and you could never use it again
or
2) the item/drawer was stuck and you could never use it again

yeah. I'd pay money to watch you walk into that store.

But, I think it was cool a long time ago. The issue is, when did they get stores.

It was cool when I was in grade school to have sanrio things, but that was a few years before Pru.
Hardly anyone has them, and they were hard to find. You almost had to have a friend that traveled frequently or oriental relatives in order to get anything.

Right, when I was a kid you couldn't get any of it just any ole place so it was a big deal if you had any.

Growing up, there was an Sanrio store near me. It was a huge treat to get stuff.
Then it closed and I was sad. Then one opened in the Westminster Mall and I was happy again.
