Maybe it is the stress, but I've had terrible wanderlust lately. I really want to hop on a plane and disappear in a unfamiliar (or even familiar) city or immerse myself in somewhere silent and calm. So far, I've almost justified trips to:
Japan
New York
Seattle
And I'm doing my best to justify New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Alaska.
If the dollar didn't suck so much Scotland, France, Prague, Berlin and Ireland would be on the list too.
Where do you want to go?

Wow, you have major wanderlust!
I just have been dreaming of getting away up the coast {I know, my major next deal is into the forest...} and enjoying some fog and the smell and sound of the ocean.
I'm stressing, but for other reasons {even as I sit here on this site ignoring all of my issues...} and want to hop in the car and go somewhere. Anywhere at this point.
But, I really am dreaming of heading up to Monterey for a few days, never been to Asilomar and looking forward to that. Also, never been away from home for the fourth of July, this will be interesting.
Thinking of getting away is what holds me together.
Flying? I'd love to go and explore more of the US. Dinosaur digs, digging for emeralds/diamonds {whatever, just for fun}, Mt. Rushmore, New England. Alaska...beautiful.
I can take the family with me because they ditch me a lot so I do end up with a lot of quiet me time.
Ooo!! Morri! Your pics remind me of Samatha Browns' trip to a town in Italy...that is where I would love to go. Looks like your first picture....

New Zealand next year almost definitely (got to visit the world's cutest nephews).
I want to do surf camp somewhere warm, like this (http://venussurfadventures.com/?gclid=CO6riuq9towCFQGPWAodt0RGRQ).
France - I would love to visit during the Tour de France.

Me, too!
Next year I'm going to Dorset for a week with my best friend. I'm dreaming mostly of that.
But I may also make a somewhat impromptu trip to Alaska in November, to live out my life long dream of being a fisherman groupie.

OMG, now that I am actually saving for a trip....dying for it to be tomorrow.
Italy (anywhere and everywhere I can be in 2008)
France (mostly Paris and Disneyland in 2008)
Scotland (and if I work it right, I can stay with my boss's family in and about Dundee) and the Highlands
Ireland
London (for the bookstores, that enough would get me there, even if there were not great theatre, music and art)
India
Egypt to see the Pyramids and the Cairo Museum (but I think this is likely not to happen in my lifetime) I would have loved to go to Egypt circa 1910.
Alaska
and for the more local and more budget realistic
Another tour of the Pacific Northwest, flying up and driving down
Hearst Castle (it's been years)
Monterey Bay Aquarium (never been, shameful)
Bodega Bay
In the meantime, in my quest to become healthier and drop pounds as well as build up an exercise regimen, I've started walking (easy and free) and my goal is to do the walks in this book (http://www.amazon.com/Stairway-Walks-Francisco-Adah-Bakalinsky/dp/0899974295/ref=sr_1_1/002-9946697-7252845?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180549235&sr=8-1). It's daunting, back in the day and many many pounds lighter work cronies and I would walk on our lunch hour and often would climb up to Coit Tower and back down through North Beach and back to the Financial District. The thought of this now makes me sweat and wheeze just thinking of it, those stairs, yikes, my knees. This will also give me an excuse to re-learn the city I call home, so much changed in the 7 years I was gone and I don't know it any more.
Can I go to Italy now? Pretty Please?

Snowflake,
If you want to go to London for the bookstores, you'd better bump it to the top of your list. Brick and mortar media outlets (that includes book stores, record stores etc) are dying just as fast on that side of the pond as they are here.

Have you looked into Argentina? From what the travel pro's are saying it's a great destination and a great deal vs the US dollar right now.
Right now I have booked:
June to Anaheim/Vegas (probably not your top get away spot)
Sept to Dublin, Ireland
With a tentative Paris for Summer '08

When you go to Seattle, let me know. It would be fun to have a PNW meet, and Seattle has some very uber-swanky meeting spaces!
I really want to go to the following:
New Zealand
UK
Germany
Antarctica (failing that, the southernmost tip of South America)
Iceland
Australia
Russia

I can't decide right now if I want to do that - or get my SCUBA certification and do a couple Caribbean/Bahama's like trips.
But I"m doing PNW for 4th of July (gotta see the new nephew - he was born May 1!) and Orlando in October.

But I'm quasi-planning the Japan trip for the same reason I went to Paris .... double advantage of nation I want to visit and Disney Park I want to visit. Alas, if that Lotto win doesn't come up, I seriously doubt I'll be able to afford Japan in '08.

And just as I was thinking that I don't like visiting countries where I know nothing of the language (it seems both uncomfortable and disrespectful), the spousal unit spent about 20 minutes drooling over a mall kiosk of rosetta stone software. Which includes Japanese. Which wouldn't make me fluent or even conversational, but might let me at least be able to say hello and thank you and where is the bathroom.

I think you need to visit Montreal for the Anarchist Bookfair (http://www.anarchistbookfair.ca/en/).
Heh heh... I lived this bit on the Anarchist marquee:
"The main space is wheelchair accessible. For more informaiton or to inqiure about other accessibility needs, see our accessibility policy [here...] or contact the collective. Free on-site childcare is available."
Aside from the typos, what self-respecting anarchist cares about these things? Besides, we all know this is just a front for the Liberation de Quebec group.;)

Yeah some anarchists sound more like communists, with odd notions that in the absence of government we'd rally to the common good. Mind you, I am not that kind of Anarchist.
wendybeth
05-31-2007, 11:41 PM
Whew! I must admit, I was a bit worried there. I mean, it's been a few decades, but things surely couldn't have changed that much! Anarchists gone soft- the thought was pretty frightening.

I hear ya, I would give my left arm to be able to go lay someplace warm and sandy near the ocean for a good week or so. *sigh*
Alas, this year's vacation will be a three day drive to Ontario to visit the husband's ailing parents. 5,000 miles in the family van with kids in tow... not exactly my idea of relaxing.
But at least we have lots of fun things planned for the next couple of years! Next spring we're finally taking our honeymoon (5 years late, but better late than never!) And in 2010 we're going to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, although that'll probably be more like a couple of weekend trips as opposed to an extended stay.
If nothing else, at least we get to live in a vacation area year round, so even if we're not on vacation ourselves, this time of year always feels vacationy. :)
There's a Dali museum in Paris as well.
Closer to home but still pretty good is the Salvador Dali Museum (http://www.salvadordalimuseum.org/home.html) (I'm not a fan of art museums but enjoyed my afternoon there) in St. Petersburg, Florida.

I visited the Evergreen Flight Museum and saw the Spruce Goose.
Spent a day in Lincoln City to enjoy a rare sunny day on the Oregon Coast.
Spent another day touring my second favorite Theme Park the Enchanted Forest near Salem.
