So... did anyone catch the first episode of Mark Burnett's "Pirate Master" show last week?

Heather and I just watched it. A little silly, but we're going to watch episode 2 tomorrow.

Comments?

no, I was a little turned off by it. it seemed like a stretch. How is it actually? Survivor on a ship? I may try watching it.

So, do they actually engage in any piracy? or is pirate the new word for sailor?

It started out a little like Survivor. 16 contestants, split into two teams. Each team gets a map and has to venture into the jungle to find a treasure. First team to the treasure gets it.

So they get back to the ship and count out the treasure - it's $40K.

Then the show gets good.

The host tells the winning team to elect a Captain. Once he's elected, the host says "OK, he gets half the treasure to do with what he wants." Then he tells the Captain to pick two officers. He does and they each get $5,000. The other 5 "winners" get $2000 each. Then the team is disbanded and the Captain gets a luxury room, which he shares with his officers. The other 13 players become the crew and have to follow the Captain's orders.

The first episode ended with a vote. The Captain (with his officers) must choose three crew members to defend themselves, lest they get voted off (in a nice pirate-y fashion, they're notified that they're marked for possible expulsion with a black spot). The three marked crew members are then voted on by the 10 other crew members. The only twist: the crew can vote for the Captain, and if the officers agree to go along with the mutiny, the Captain is set adrift. That didn't happen in episode one, but the Captain is a tough cookie, so it might happen soon...

One can only hope the poor captain has a hairy back and access to sea turtles.

Visible WB mojo.

Survivor on a ship?Or Big Brother on a boat.

I wasn't impressed.

I missed this one. I was too busy shaving my back and feeding my sea turtles.

I thought it was pretty silly.

And I said this elsewhere but if the person voted off is allowed to steal things (the guy voted off in episode 1 took both of the ships compasses with him) then the next person should take the anchor.

If you played a lot of RPGs as a kid (or still do) then you'll be well aware of the level of faux-serious atrocious dialog as people try to make speeches.

Survivor twice a year is plenty for me, thanks. Besides, I've been so stuffed full of pirate antics that I'm about to vomit all over the place.

I think the faux-serious atrocious dialog is what made the show for me. Watching the "Captain" give his "The Big Dipper points to the north" speech cracked me up.
