Since Disney isn't doing anything to celebrate Epcot's 25th this year (I hear that Spaceship Earth will be down on the actual anniversary), I figured I'd start an Epcot appreciation blog.
I launched it yesterday, 100 days before the birthday, with the idea that I'd post one cool Epcot thing per day, whether it be a photo, a podcast, a memory, a factoid... whatever.
Today's post is a memory from our very own flippyshark.
You can check out the site here (http://mousepod.com/epcot).
If you want to contribute, you know how to find me.

Cool... If I can get down there, I'll record Dave...
By the way, today's post is a podcast from The Meandering Mouse - it's a great retrospective on Horizons and Spaceship Earth.
...and Steph, I want a big picture of that hat (and any memories that go along with it) - PM me if you're game.

Ooooh, I am the most excited.
I will likely dig up several -to- many contributions.
I heard yesterday that Spaceship Earth might open November 1 - - one month too late.

Ooh, I'll be in Florida in time to catch that - however - I doubt I'll have the time to head to Orlando. :(
ETA: I'll have to see if/where I have any pics... though I don't think I have them anymore.

Spaceship Earth was so cool. I have bunches of photos from my trip that I am still sorting through.
And I suppose I'm the only one who liked the magic Mickey wand over Spaceship Earth.

You are certainly in a smaller demographic. I know a few others who like it (and who were around before it went up, so they are favoring the wand even though they remember SE pre-1999) But by far the majority of Disney-phans I know are looking forward to its disappearance. (as am I)
I'm just wondering where they plan to store the darned thing.

Well I never saw it without.
Spaceship Earth was really neat. I did find it a bit humorous that they tell you to remain seated as your car turns. Never heard such an announcement before.

Permanecer sentados por favor.
I haven't been following its remake, will Spaceship Earth still be a mostly slow, mostly quiet ride?
It has always been my favorite attraction for taking a nap. I don't think I've ever stayed awake through the whole thing (generally I am pretty sleep deprived the first couple days I'm in Florida).

I still think Spaceship Earth was creepy, though I enjoyed it for the same reasons. Sort of an all-pervasive Big Brother world the animatronic residents were living in, or am I the only one that feels that way about Spaceship Earth?
Couldn't say, so far as I ever experienced, technological improvement in communication ended with the invention of papyrus.

It's not your standard remain seated announcement. During the ride as cars are in motion they start to turn and the announcement says to remain seated as the cars turn (and are still in motion).

If I remember corectly (and I am in the same darn park, I could go over and ride it to check), the recording tells you that your vehicle is about to turn around as well as to remain seated. I don't have the full story, but, this recording was not always there, and there was apparently an incident that made it necessary. (I think someone tried to get out at the top. Others may have the full scoop, I sure don't.)
I'll have to take my camera on a ride-through sometime in the next couple of weeks, before this version of Spaceship Earth rolls away.

It's been around since 2002. There's an old thread discussing it at MP (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?t=5022&highlight=spaceship+earth).
