View Full Version : Let's talk about the iPhone.

Ok, so the iPhone is out, and the reviews are in.
Apparently the interface is awesome, and it's every bit as sexy as advertised. It works well as an iPod too.
However....and this is a big however.....the call quality isn't that great. I've read this across the board. It's always in the middle of the review. Then they say "the iPhone delivers" or "the iPhone sets a new standard" or "it gets an 8 out of 10".
Um, no.
A phone is supposed to be a phone. Even if it is 10 other gadgets at once. It's called the iPhone, not the iPDA, or the iDigitalCamera. The phone part is not a feature of some other item - the phone part IS the item.
If a phone costs 500 bucks and rides a wave of hype this large, it better be The. Best. Damn. Phone. Ever.
It isn't.
God, how I hate the cellphone market. I thought that by now, all this BS of less than stellar call quality would be segregated to the lower echelons of phone purchases. Not THE phone, THE product, THE amazing apex of gadget consumerism, of which I love being a voyeuristic part.
F U, Apple. I'm disappointed. Not like I'd have bought the damn thing anyway, but I can't even be vicariously excited anymore.
I guess I should be glad. Now, when my current cell contract expires in a few months, I'll be happy with whatever gadget I can afford - because I'll know the call quality will probably be the same as the iPhone's.

My Blackberry Pearl 8100 can do EVERYTHING the iPhone can (including Visual Voicemail) and was $400 cheaper.
Normally I'm a big Apple fan, but I'm really not seeing the hype to the iPhone. There is no textile feedback, you can't sync over Bluetooth, no tethering to your laptop for use as a modem, apparently it gets hot as hell when you are using it, no GPS, and you can't use custom ringtones or alarms.
Plus, the plans are wayyy too expensive. 60 bucks for 450 minutes and 200 text messages? No thanks!

I've heard of poor call quality with other PDAs as well. That's not jut the iPhone. I would consider the iPhone in the PDA category.
I still think it's cool, but it's too expensive for me at this point and I'm generally not an early adopter of high tech.

Apple advocate though I usually am, I knew on first presentation that iphone was something I would (at best) wait a few generations on. The interface is really nifty, but it doesn't fill any particular void in my life. It strikes me as supremely gadgety for gadgetness' sake.
On the other hand, my iPod is like my portable soul. Happy happy.

I'm just waiting for the inevitable iPhone minus the phone with more storage. I'll bet it'll be out by the holidays. I'll bet it'll be called an iPod.
Well I didn't buy one Friday but know someone who did and I will say that I'm not sure where the call quality issue is coming from. He didn't buy the recommended blue tooth headset but just paired his 'existing' headset to the phone and the sound quality has been fine. We've carried on conversations everywhere we had before he switched to the iPhone and haven't had any degradation in voice quality that I have been able to detect.
I'm not to thrilled with not being able to have my custom ring tones tho...that is kind of important to me.

Ah yes, custom ringtones. I was surprised when I learned that this feature was not available on the iPhone. It seems like such a natural fit. I'd bet that it's forthcoming in future iterations. (That said, I wouldn't use them myself.)

Just for the record, that's CNET's review for nearly every cell phone out there. "It's missing such and such major feature, and this major feature doesn't work so great. We give it an 8/10."
I wouldn't buy one for one simple reason:
It doesn't use the fast digital network for Web use and that'll likely be fixed within the next year as AT&T get's the new network distributed to useful coverages.
However, the new network will require new hardware so it won't be possible to upgrade the existing iPhones. It will be necessary top purchase a new one. For the money involved I wouldn't go near a version 1.0 product with such an obvious short-term hardware upgrade coming.
I also wouldn't buy one because all of the other features don't appeal to me. All I want in a phone is: the ability to make phone calls; the ability to get around the internet reasonably well for specific information missions.
I don't want a photo album.
I don't want a fancy iPod interface (I never use anything other than "shuffle" on my iPod).
I don't particularly want the orientation of the screen to change based on how my hand moves while looking at it.
I definitely don't want it to takes six steps to start a call (as the David Pogue NYT review says it can).
And I don't want to be tied to a single carrier. I had few complaints about AT&T when we had them years ago and they may be great now. But single carrier will keep the prices high and leave you at the whims of a pretty volatile industry.
Finally, I hate the ergonomics of brick cellphones. There is something amusing (to me) about how we spent 130 years ergonomically perfecting the telephone only to come up with such uncomfortable to use cellphone. All cellphones are great when you're using a headset but I make so few calls that a headset is more trouble that it is worth. So I want something that is comfortable in the hand and against my head. That feels like I can both listen to it and talk into it at the same time. I haven't yet seen an iPhone in person so that could be a non-issue but looking at pictures of it I doubt it.

It's so sexy. And so pretty. And fun to mess around with. As much as I want one because of the above reasons, AT&T shoot Cingular I mean AT&T has horrible coverage. I'm content playing with my roommates iPhone until something new catches my fancy.

I just got the Blackberry Pearl and I've been pretty happy with it so far. Sometimes it takes a click or two to get to a phone call, but I'm sure I'll find the shortcuts and be good.

To be honest with you, I think the speed of the current EDGE network is fine. It's faster than dial up, and I don't need to have a super fast broadband connection wherever I go. I can check my email, read the news, and even browse facebook from my phone with speeds that are just fine.
Give the iPhone 2 years and I think it will be one of the most amazing phones out there, but it's just not quite there (feature wise) yet.
Like I said, I haven't seen it but the local radio guy who reviewed it said that the network speed was not faster than dial up. But he didn't give specific numbers and maybe was being hyperbolic.
But for me it is all moot. Since the only thing I want a cellphone to do is at best secondary to everything else it does.

Ditto. If cell phones are going to get bigger again, does that mean golf umbrellas will get smaller?
Ditto. If cell phones are going to get bigger again, does that mean golf umbrellas will get smaller?
If so then consider me a supporter of big phones. No bigger winter-time bane to my existence than short men (and average height women) who feel that golf umbrellas are the only adequate form of rain protection. (Because the umbrella's prongs on such a person tend to be right at throat level on me and the holder never seems aware that the umbrella is much bigger than them.)

I'm on the fence about IPhone. I certainly think its cool and has lots of bells and whistles but I think I'll wait a few years. Let it get all the bugs out before I spend several hundreds of dollars on a phone. I've been wanting the IPhone but I just cant afford an upgrade that costly. I currently have a Palm Treo 650 and it suits my needs for now.
As I'm an At&t/Cingular user, I do have to complain that I have lots of dropped calls, bad phone reception (not just cuz of the PDA already having bad reception), and a very expensive phone bill. Its ridiculous what you pay to have Web, Text, Phone, and Sync services!! So although I can't live without the PDA, I can certainly live without the huge bills and At&ts crappy cell service.

I'm waiting for the next gen, and a generation thats maybe from t-mobile since my contract like never ends with them.
In fact when my sidekick broke (and then i did something with it) i upgraded to a Wave smart phone which has many of the same features just down sized, and of course to get the best deal got a 2 year extension on moms line...
AT&T is nice and all, but its still almost just like t-mobile, EDGE is like 56k and your not always going to be on wifi. (Wave uses Edge and Wifi when available, and i can plug my Wave into my laptop and use the internet from it)

While I think it's very pretty, I can neither justify the cost, nor would I use most of the non-phone functions. Heck, on my present phone, I barely use a percentage of what it is capable of doing. All I want is a phone that works, gets a decent signal and I keep the battery charged in case there is a problem on the road and I need to call for service.
That said, it sure is pretty, as BTD would say, shiny!
Another "really, really cool except for the phone part of it sucking" article (http://www.slate.com/id/2169620/). The guy essentially has to keep his Verizon service so that he can make calls while at home in Washington, D.C.

And I, like Goonie, will never get an iphone if it is only on AT&T/Cingular.

My T-mobile wave is a descendant from your MDA (same plugs i believe) and it gets reception when the sidekick 3 doesn't, and i can have custom ring tones, imagine that, a t-mobile smart phone with custom ring tones.

I like my Verizon- I would even if Eric didn't work for them. Great coverage, reasonable plan and more features than I know what to do with. I have internet access, video and photo, GSL, Chaperone, etc. Their Navigator is great- can tell where you are at within feet, and the maps are very clear and easy to read. I just can't see what IPhone can offer to beat that, especially at the price they charge.

I am not so sure it doesn't suck anyway. What have they done to address the skin-oil problem? I have not seen that mentioned in any of the write-ups (though, admittedly, I've only read a few).
A completely screen-based interface will fail if they haven't solved the problem of human skin oils.
Also ... why do ALL cell phones put the screen where your ear goes instead of where your mouth goes? Sure, it might seem "upside down" - but you wouldn't have to clean your screen after every call.
As for the iPhone itself - - - yawn!
But the interface has promise for other devices.

I'm waiting to see what will come of the class action suit over the merger and how Cingular refused to help AT&T customers unless they converted their accounts and then charged them for new [more expensive plans], new equipment and activation fees, charging termination fees to those who were no longer receiving the same quality reception as they did with AT&T and converting accounts from AT&T into Cingular accounts with no notice and requiring new phones, plans and activation fees to be paid before they would assist you (this is what happened to me).

You should have received a letter a while ago stating that there was a class action lawsuit going on. You were qualified to participate in the merger lawsuit if you switched to a Cingular plan after the merger and had to lay out for new equipment and pay new activation charges or bought out before a certain date. I'm not clear on the specifics anymore.

I am the sort of person who ruins or loses some of my favorite belongings. I've lost almost every single sweater I've ever called 'favorite'. I recently lost Sputnik Sweetheart, my nearly new Nano iPod I purchased in February of this year. Before that, I lost my CD player. The electronic devices I do own usually crap out on me, eventually.
There is every reason in the world for why I shouldn't consolidate expensive items into one even more expensive item. Instead of losing one item, I run the risk of losing my everything-in-one item. So for that reason I'm not a huge fan of cell phones that can also be music players or cameras. Or cell phones that can be your calendar/contacts book. Or cell phones that are also PCs, iPods, etc., etc., etc. I'm the kind of person who likes to compartmentalize, for better or worse.

I've been using the calendar function on my phone lately, but I still keep a backup on paper for a lot of things. My paper calendar is my "brain" but the phone one is nice because it puts things in the order in which they happen, which my paper one may not do on a lot of days; depends when things get scheduled. Often I schedule something in the evening, write it down, then schedule something in the morning, and now it's out of order.

Since I've lately been forgetting my phone everytime I take my iPod somewhere, I'm sorta convinced that I'm a one-device man who needs a combo something.
Being that I'm not Japanese, I don't need a camera at my disposal 24/7 ... but it would be nice to have my iPod and phone be one unit. That's it, though. I certainly don't need the internet everywhere I go ... and paying to have it on a mobile basis is beyond even my fairly extravagant expense allowances.
The touch-interface seems best with a plethora-use device ... and I just feel an oldster like me is never going to have much plethora-needs on the move.
Of course, one of the downsides of screens in the digital age - cellphone screens, camera screens - is that you often can't see them in the daylight. Has Apple solved this problem?
Seems to me the base issues of daylight visibility and skin oils are not being addressed in any reviews of the iPhone. Who cares how much it does if you can't operate it in the daytime and must clean it after every use?

Ruh-roh! (http://redtape.msnbc.com/2007/07/why-was-iphones.html)
The iPhone battery will only survive about 300-400 recharges, the company says. Because the unit is sealed, consumers can't swap out dead batteries. Instead, dead phones must be sent to Apple, where battery replacement will take three business days and cost $79 plus a $6.95 shipping charge. Those who can't live without their cell phones for those three days can rent a spare iPhone for $29.

DOH!
Why, in this day and age, did Apple seal the battery inside? That was stupid!
Because, as I understand, it was necessary for getting their form down to the size it is.
And people don't seem too bothered by the similar problem on with the iPod. Hopefully, though, before long it is a job that will be doable at an Apple or AT&T store so that the 3-day wait isn't necessary.
But yeah, it seems a decision up there with that horrible round one-button iMac mouse. At least that was easily replaced.

Somehow, the battery issue doesn't seem like an issue to me. All cell phones have limited battery re-charging lives and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference if it charges at 100% or 90%. The way most people go through devices, it's not going to be an issue anyways.
I've eventually replaced the batter on every cell phone I've owned (three over the last decade). But it was never that big of a deal. I just went to a store and bought a new one and swapped it out. Since I'm going to the store regardless, if the iPhone could be swapped on site that would be great but sending my phone away for three days would be annoying (and I easily go a week without actually using mine).
As people increasingly give up landlines to go cell only (like we are) it becomes and even bigger issue.

...Back to my 30 Gig iPod Video.
*swoon* I have an 80gig....LOVE my iPod....mostly for video these days.
iPhone- cute- but not worth the $$, changing carriers, or the glitches for a new technology.

Of course, the inevitable web site devoted to iPhone hacks (http://www.iphonehacks.com/).
This post is from mine! Can't say much more than that here :-p

Researchers hack into iPhone via Web
Hackers could take control of an iPhone if its owner visits a doctored Web site or Internet hotspot, security researchers reported Monday.
The vulnerability of the vaunted device, Apple Inc.'s first cell phone, is only theoretical for now. There are no reports of criminals actually taking advantage of the security glitch to remotely access an iPhone.

Another good question, now that the iPhone's been around a while, is .... can you see the screen in full daylight? Or is the unit, um, inoperable outdoors (which I find problematic for a portable device)?
Another good question is does the thing get all mucked up with human skin oils every five seconds?
Is there anybody with an iPhone out there who can answer these good questions??

There's a security update for Safari, but I haven't been able to get an answer to the daylight/skin oil questions either.
Not a thorough test but I did play with an iPhone inside an Apple Store the other night.
So this one has been touched with by probably hundreds of people and while skin oil was discernible it didn't really affect viewability at all. Could be a completely different story in sunlight though.

Is that your sister? She's a hottie!
No, it's not her, but it's close.
She wants to be Eva Longoria.
The picture was referring back to the "Thither Thychic" thread. My sister says and does really shallow things every now and then. But I don't think she even realizes how she sounds sometimes.
There's no way I could afford an iPhone but her attitude is that because she can, then everyone should be able to...

I had this conversation with Maddy the other day as we were passing a phone store-
Madz - I'm waiting for the price to go down before I get an iPhone.
Me - oh really? And what were you planning on using to by it with? Your good looks?
Madz - No you're going to get me one.
Me -um riiiiiiight. Don't think so sporto.

I have not really been reading this iPhone thread, so forgive me if this is a repeat. I thought it was funny. This guy got this "Official iPhone Tool (http://www.flickr.com/photos/keithmuth/997674912/in/set-72157601192063020/)" in his warranty service packet. Truth or prank?

At first, I thought: this is a really funny hoax. But in a preliminary search, I see several reputable sites talking about this so it may be true.
It is nice to see that Apple still has a sense of humour (although the iPhone does require a paper clip to remove the SIM card).

Unlocking the iPhone part duex (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/09/12/free_iphone_unlocking_solution_released_for_downlo ad.html)In its current state, however, the iUnlock solution is not for the technically-challeneged or faint-of-heart. It requires a "jailbroken" iPhone, rudimentary knowledge of using a unix terminal, experience with SFTP and some patience. Some tutorials on how to apply the hack have also begun to crop up, but they're currently rough around the edges..

Nope. Just interesting to see what happens now. While it's not illegal to unlock your phone, it's not illegal for them to turn it into a $400 paper weight.

Are the software updates forced or opt in?
According to Apple, they're optional.
I think it is AWFULLY convenient for Apple that the latest update just HAPPENS to turn your iphone into an expensive paperweight, don't you? I'm sure there'll be a hack for it soon tho to undo what Apple claims are "permanently damaged" phones.
Man, am I happy I don't have an iphone or have to deal with AT&T.
