I love the movies for the eye candy, but I really do enjoy the books, very easy to get immersed totally.

I have no theory on the ending, in fact, I have not revisted the last two books prior to release (as is usual for me). I don't want to remember everything that happened before in such detail and just want to go into the book cold with no expectations.

I'm looking forward to being curled up on the couch with my kitty and turning pages as fast as I can!

I can't believe it's going to be so soon... For both. It seems like I've been waiting in anticipation for so long that I didn't see the dates sneaking up on me. I'll be catching the movie when I get out to Utah, and curling up with the book, reading with fervor so that it doesn't get too late into the late summer session by the time I'm done.

I'm with CP, in that I didn't like the last two books. In fact, I thought the last book was so bad, I'm mostly going to read the new book simply because it's the last one.

Any other such poor entry in a series as Half Blood Prince would have me turning my back on any later releases.



Hmmm, and I never "catch-up" by reading the prior books again ... but often the new book will inspire me to read a few of the old ones.

Order of the Pheonix was probably my favorite book of the series. HBP left me very blah. It just didn't seem very put together and was hard to follow everything going on. She was trying too hard to get an emotional reaction from her readers and it didn't work.

Yeah, I've had Olberman's theory since Aud and I spent an evening dishing at our favorite diner after we'd finished the book... and I think that would work well with the purported word of the last chapter of Deathly Hallows. Nevertheless, I can't wait to read it. Aud and I are going to be at our standard Burbank bookstore (this'll be our third time there for an HP release.)

This time with Tom in tow, since he's read (and savored) all six since the last release. (So no "hey, just calling to chat and INTERRUPT YOUR READING MARATHON" calls like last time. "Honey, I love you, but... I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE!") He and I are each buying our own-- no way we can wait for the other to finish!

Awww, I miss those days. Tori had to dress up every opening night for LOTR and HP. She went as Eowyn on the ROTK opening night, and she was so cute. She had a beautiful medieval dress her grandma had made, a sword and at the time had long, flowing blond/brown curls that reached her derriere. She really looked like a mini-Eowyn, and everyone knew who she was supposed to be.

Here is the bain of my parenting existence...We forgot our camera the night of, but the events person took pictures there and said to call and she'd send us a copy. I saw the film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, last night at a midnight showing in Glendale. It was pretty good. I am not a Harry Potter fan per se (I caught up with the whole series in one or two marathon showings) but this was probably the best of the lot. They're all looking a little long in the tooth for school (not as old as the "teenagers" did in Porky's, but its getting close) but after awhile I stopped thinking about it and got into the story, which moves pretty quickly. Lots of good laughs, thrills, special effects.

Wow I am surprised -- I thought Book 5 (the movie that is coming out today) flat out sucked. I am sure the movie will be more interesting.

Book 6 I thought was a fine return to form for JK Rowling, after the crapfest of Order of the Phoenix, even though it is basically half a story (while all of the others have been standalone books with an overarching story, book 6 does not have a resolution of its own).

Ok, I'm rereading book six and I have a few predictions:

Neville dies.

Percy Weasley dies.

Bellatrix is so obviously in love with Voldie. She dies.

Snape is on the side of good. He will risk or give his life to save Harry.

Wormtail still owes Harry a life debt...what will come of that?

Malfoy dies...who kills him? Voldie? Snape? Harry? Or perhaps, like his father, he survives and continues to be a servant of the dark arts in secret.

The big three will return to Hogwarts to finish their schooling at the end of the book.

I'll really miss Neville. I really really hope Hagrid doesn't die. I will be so crushed. I'm on the fence about whether Dumbledore comes back. There are so many Phoenix references that I wouldn't at all be surprised, but at the same time JKR has said she doesn't bring people back. I think maybe Sirius will come back.

I'm on record for saying this before, so I can say it now: Ron bites it. He has a fatal flaw that is portrayed in so many ways that there is no doubt in my mind that he will end up dying as either a direct or indirect result of it. I think he will be tempted to the wrong side, but will see the light at the end and die a hero's death. I've also thought that Harry survives and winds up with those 12 kids Trelawney threw at him. He hasn't a family, so it makes sense that he repopulates the wizard community with a new generation of Potters. With Ginny, of course.

I think Hagrid will die early in the book. Malfoy will kill Neville, and Harry will kill Malfoy. Harry wins at the end, else there's no point to the whole business.

Now, if Rowling really wants to kick everybody in the stomach, she kills Hagrid, Ron and Hermione off fairly early on, leaving Harry more alone than ever. Or, Harry has to sacrifice them for the greater good.

I'll be getting my reserved copy at midnight at our local bookseller. (Not that I'll be allowed to read it.) I'll be curious as to the police and ambulance presence in anticipation of the idiot who yells out the ending to the crowd and gets beaten to death.

BossRadio has been trying to annoy me with predictions based on the first two chapters of Sorcerer's Stone (as they're the only ones that he has actually read.) This leaves him only with Dudley=Voldemort.

Me? I think Harry's scar is the horcrux. I think Neville will battle with Bellatrix, but I'm not sure who will lose. I think Sirius probably isn't coming back. I think Dumbledore and Snape were in cahoots and for some reason, Snape had to do what he did. (I also think he'll die saving/helping Harry.) I think Dumbledore will only be available via portrait. I think Ginny will never put up with Harry's insistence that they can't be together. I think a Weasley will die (but I hope it's only Percy.) I think Hagrid is toast. I think I'll be super-pissed if Hermione or Ron dies, but I'll be OK (but sad) if Harry dies. Ginny can only die if Harry bites it, too.

See, that's not at all the reason I'm pre-ordering. Suggested price from the publisher and the price for a pre-order are significantly different enough to warrant a pre-order, especially since I need to be cost-conscious. Why pay $38 (or whatever it's supposed to be) when I can pay $18(amazon.com) to $20-something(B&N)?

We're excited because it's our tradition. Long post coming soon about that. But essentially, it's our tradition to go to the same store together, watch the dressed-up kiddies play games, take our picture with the Potter cut-out, eat dinner and theorize, wear thematic (but not costumed, per se) clothing, and get all hopped up on the crowd energy until the floodgates break through at midnight. The wait isn't that long, because they line you up in order of wristband-- so if we get there around 10:30 or 11 we'll just have to entertain each other for an hour. Plus, being surrounded by fellow fans, the time goes quickly because everyone wants to talk to each other. It is FUN, FUN, FUN.

First of all, you don't need to reserve the book to get deep discounts ... just buy it during the first weekend. Borders is selling it at 40% off to all comers ... and I read in ze L.A. Times that most bookstores are following suit ... so as not to be shut out of the masses of customers who will be crowding the stores. Harry Potter will be used as a loss-leader and, ironically, the biggest selling book of the year will end up, according to this story, making zero profits for booksellers.


I also read in today's L.A. Times about the various bookstore festivities around town ... and it seems the Barnes & Noble at the Grove has got them all beat, with a live rock band providing the beat - in addition to all the usual trivia, costumes, characters, etc.

I wanna join in the energy and excitement! I'm not even buying the book (it's being shipped to me), but I want to go to the hottest last Harry Potter book party possible. Anyone else interested in hitting the B&N at The Grove Friday night???

I forget how long her chapters are... maybe a thread every even-numbered chapter? (Eg: if you've read through Chapter 2, you can safely read the Chapter 2 discusssion, but want to avoid the Chapter 4, etc)?

Or is that going to be WAY too many threads?

Well... I don't know about you, but I'm not touching any form of communication until after I've finished. I have to say I find it a little ridiculous the general hysteria about possible spoilers. I had to go to B&N last night for completely non-Potter reasons, it was horrible and I have to admit a small part of me was tempted to buy th book and then stand by the cash registers reading the last few pages out loud until I was beaten to death by 12-year-olds and their cape-wearing, wand-wielding, plastic-glasses wearing, how-did-they-ever reproduce parents (at least I hope they were there with a kid). But just a small part of me.

Someone else, however, went way too far. A friend reports that someone rented a plane with the scrolling writing on the underside and last night flew it over the Sonoma County Fair with it showing Harry Potter spoilers. No idea if they were accurate spoilers.

Anyway, it was fun to be among all the kids and peeps in costume, running around the store doing trivia, and coloring and consuming creatively-named Starbucks concoctions. I didn't stick around to get the book. By the time I arrived at the store, my wristband would have put me at around 1am. Nah.

I'm off to get it in about 15 minutes, and that's the last anyone will see of me today.

I've never been so immersed in Harry Potter in my life.

My tradition of reading the adapted book right after I see the movie leaves me reading TWO Harry Potter novels at once, plus still in the throes of seeing the film (today's 3-D version will be screening 3 for me).

And there was the fun of the midnight mania bookstore madness, and more fun at my actual book purchase the following morning.
