GD's complaints about his tight jeans in an old photo brought to mind the whole slew of fashion trends we've all gone through. So fess up! What embarrassing fashion did you sport back in the day?

I had stirrup pants. Not just one pair either.

Stir-Up pants with big t-shirts over them
Spandex pants with big t-shirts over them
Bicycle shorts with big t-shirts over them (anyone else see a trend?)

Tight skinny jeans

Other than second clothing my mom bought for me when I was really young I don't think I've ever worn clothes I'd consider horribly laughable today.

I've always been a jeans and t-shirt type guy.

Other people might have thought the clothes I was wearing embarrassing but not me.

Not sure about the clothes (I went from preppy to wannabe semi-goth in High School) but I definitely had that stupid hairdo where it was long on top and short around the sides that was so popular in the early-mid-90s.

Not a mullet (which is short on top and long only at the back), but still.. I could put it into a little pony tail in the back and man that looked dumb with short sides.

I think E needs to break those down a bit between what's an obvious costume and what he wore in all, for want of a better word, seriousness.

As for me, I don't think I bought into any horrible fashion trends as an adult. As a child of the '70s, however, in terms of fabrics, colors and patterns, I generally went around looking like a professional bowler. For some reason, hot pants were in style for little boys and, in lieu of a tie, I had at least one class portrait taken wearing a Charles Nelson Reilly neckerchief.

Hair is arguably another matter. Until about my sophomore year of college, I had hair that was a cross between Greg Brady and Bernie in Room 222.

There don't exist that many photos of me, much less in fashion horrificness. I hate having my picture taken, and every time I submit, I am reminded why. Well, two of me as a kid. I honestly don't have any of me sporting any major fad... it happened more as a kid when I had less say over my clothing.

Boudoir Carebears. This picture was taken at my aunt's house. The best part (to me) was, while she was making breakfast, I'd went into her bedroom and picked up the romance novel she was reading. She snapped this picture.

More generic dorkiness, puffy shorts. Oh yeah... I remember that this was the first time I'd seen Rollerblades. We were at the skate rental shack near where the Fun Zone was in Newport/Balboa Island. No, they didn't let me try out the Rollerblades. I think this is a less-than-happy look.

Things that I wore:
(looks that I rocked will come later. Prepare yourself for the horrors! Especially when my fashionista icons at the time were Debbie Gibson & all of the Heathers.) :p

*Swatches! I had the pastel yellow banana-scented Swatch, the white Swatch with the blue polka-dotted face (I also had the matching bag). The clear coral Swatch with multi-colored fishies on the face, the neon green, hot pink, clear black Swatch..I can't even remember them all! I was a total Swatchdog. ;)

*L.A. Gear Hightops & Reebok Hightops in all of the pastel colours! I had white, pink, banana yellow.... I wish I could remember!

*Fancy, bejeweled Banana Clips. Adorned with pearls & crystals. As if my giant, pouffy spritzed 80's hair even allowed those gems to be seen.

*Every scrunchie in every fabric & color known to man. I have a soft spot for the gold lame' scrunchy & the purple grosgrain scrunchy adorned with dangling gold coins. Oof.

*Those big, hideous bows attached to barrettes. To elegantly restrain our poufy, fried, teased, choking on Sebastian Freeze Hair Sprayed tresses.

Jeans? Jordache, Sergio Valente, Bon Jour, Dittos, Gloria Van Der Bilt, Guess?, Bongo. All super-tight. The best ones had the zippers on the hem or the little denim bows. Eek!

There are so many more to add. I'll end up sinking this Thread with nightmares! However, I went to Catholic School from pre-school to senior year, so I grew up in a plaid skirt & kneesocks. Weekends and free-dress days (which were rule-heavy) allowed me to indulge in trendy crimes of fashion. ;)

Why is it when I really can't post, all of the AllyOops! friendly Threads get posted?? Damn! Double damn! ;)

Guess jeans with the triangle on the butt and the zippers on the ankles.

I was the sh*t riding my bike in my guess jeans tucked into my 3 pairs of scrunchie socks that matched my LA Gear Flames. And my spiral permed hair in a side ponytail with matching scrunchie.

Daymn I was hot.

This picture is so dated, but not because of my outfit. (And, of course, I'm on the phone.)

A rotary dial phone and turntable? My god woman, how old are you?!

Actually, since that is the April 25, 1985, issue of Rolling Stone against the bookshelf that probably dates the picture pretty accurately.

I'm also curious what the daily calendar is on the top shelf. It looks like a comic strip.

I'd like to think it is Garfield.

omg NA! what a hottie!

the groups I hung with from about Jr HS on didnt do 'fashion'. 90% of what I wore on a given day was recycled mil surplus (basically, whatever leftovers my dad found as forgottens or throw aways in the barracks he painted)

yes....I invented the grunge look. not one of my prouder moments.

My mom would never let me participate in any of the fads, so I wore a series of generic outfits growing up. Probably could wear similar items today without attracting much notice.

I did have a grunge phase, but I also lived in the Seattle area, so it was required. I miss those jeans - both knees blown out - and ripped the honest way, through wear, not through an attack of scissors. Those jeans, green high-top Converse, a TMBG t-shirt, black velour blazer that I bought at the thrift store, a necklace of wooden beads, and hand-beaded earrings. Probably my favorite outfit of all time.

Let's talk jelly (and not the K-Y kind)!

*Jelly bracelets & neon lace hair bows (Thank you, Madonna. We all felt like virgins. Mainly because we were.)

*Jelly shoes (I just bought a pair of darling Michael Kors strappy sandals. Fashioned entirely out of jelly. However, they don't look like the jellies of yore. Jelly shoes have made a comeback, kiddies. I raided Macy's last Saturday & I saw a pair of clear jelly shoes adorned with lots of sparkly multi-coloured rhinestones. They are by Betsy Johnson. And yes, you know that I want them. :)

I loved my jelly shoes.

Remember when they had those handbags that looked like jellies only they were made of a harder plastic? And that was before Caboodles became the teen storage-unit-of-choice

It's probably Beethoven and Mozart pictured. You can also see the red spot on my head from the time we were sticking a suction baby toy on our heads and got obvious hickies. Don't play with baby toys while drunk. I'm not sure about the calendar. It probably had something to do with cats and it was probably a gift. I like the fact that The Hunger soundtrack was on the play list.

The first hottie in the Bacon pic is Greg, former husband of Susan from Seattle (who is signed up on the board but hasn't posted due to some horrible life events). The second hottie with the album in his head is Peter, brother of Lizziebeth.

I saw the RS off to the side... Either Alex has that cover permanently etched into his memory banks, or he looked it up. It would be frightening if he knows RS cover dates off the top of his head, or had such a deep fascination with Richard Gere to have that kind of thing memorized.

I looked it up. Apparently Richard Gere has been on the cover of Rolling Stone twice. 1980 and 1985. eBay provides pictures of both covers without much work and it is definitely 1985.

At least I didn't mention that while the box of Trivial Pursuit dates from 1983 or later the Yahtzee is probably from the mid '70s or earlier.

I didn't even meet Chris until 1983. And, we didn't live together until February '84. I need to throw away my trash!

OMG! I remember that issue! There was a picture of Roger Daltry in a teeny tiny bikini bottom sunning himself. I thought it was odd.

Are you saying that the 1982 cover is the one in the photo, or just pointing out a cover I missed? The one in Lisa's picture is definitely the April 25, 1985 cover:
