Perseids Sunday night (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20187093?GT1=10252)! And a new moon to boot, so prime viewing!
We should swank...:cool:

ooooh, maybe zapppop and I will drive part of the ways back to Vegas with SuPeR K! and Leigh-Ann on Sunday. This would be a good way to get them to leave the Park before closing! We could try and be away from most city lights by 11pm.
Um, but does that mean driving out past Barstow??? Or is there anywhere closer that has less light pollution than your standard SouthernCalifornia Continual Megatrolpolis??
(like, if we were to swank, where could we all go that's not a million miles away?)

I'll do some searching and see what I can come up with. I mean, obviously the desert is one option, but there are probably others. If I lived in the valley, I'd say Frazier Park, but that's a hell of a long way to come back down to south OC on a work night. Griffith Park would be impossible at that hour. Hmm... will have to look into it.

Well, if it's swank you are after, I'd suggest the rooftop of the Standard Hotel - light pollution be damned, besides who want to see all those dinky meteors anyway. Have a cocktail and lie back to see the big guys.

It's raining steaks!
Can you buy umbrellas for that?
And just imagine the smell! :eek:

It's pretty dark at night here - I see many more stars than when I lived closer to L.A.

I really tried hard to find a clip of the "Meat Shower" segment from Between the Lions, but the best I could do for you was a song about homophones.

I had wanted to go up to Mt. Laguna and sit up at the top {I forget the name of it but it is scary at night! :eek: }
We did this a couple of years ago. Before we went up to the top we went out to the parking lot of the lodge. I couldn't sit out there...kept hearing things in the bushes....and, I could have sworn we heard a UFO!!! :eek:
{and we weren't :cheers: :cheers: either!!}
but, anywho, I would like to go at least to the beach. That is usually pretty freakin' dark at night. Down here, not only do we have all of the lights but we have TJ which doesn't seem to use those yellow lights...
Wow, I wonder if you went out to the parking lot at Barona if there is a top on the upper level....hmm....
But...I think something else might come up....
RStar~ I thought she meant it was raining men!!! LOL You know, um, meat!!! Like, humina humina!!

Ok, get your mind out of the gutter....
;)
If I went to the beach here in Huntington, I still cant see much of the stars because of the moisture in the air.
As a sign of getting old, the Perseids are only of interest to me in the years when they peak on a Friday or Saturday night.

Um, the west coast peak is at 11pm. Sunday still works for this old codger.

Alex, that is why I haven't reserved a room up in the mountains, don't want to run home early Monday morn.
RStar~ Oh, okay. :p And, thanks for pointing out the moisture issue. I noticed today that it seems a bit cloudy even though sunny. {:confused: } So, I'd imagine tonight will be more so. At the beach {I was by the beach when I noticed the clouds...}
Thanks, iSm, that really helps.
Hmm. What to do.

Though I saw one really good shooting star last night, I'm not going to be seeing the bulk of the Perseids this evening.
I am heartened that my good friends SuPeR K! and Leigh-Ann will be stopping in the middle of desert nowhere on the way back to Vegas tonight to catch the celestial show.

I forgot until now, which of course is *the* time, right? Doubt I'll see much here at home :(

I saw one! I saw one! Took Barnum out for a walk and stood around looking, and despite being too light and moist, there was a lovely bright one with a long path. Yay!

I saw one, too! Even with all of the light pollution in town. It was a quick one, and I only stood outside for about ten minutes.

Every year, around my birthday there's a meat shower. This year, I stood outside for about 15 minutes at about 1 AM and saw a few come down!
