Directions to the Beach Party Bonfire

Get to the 55 Freeway, heading south. That’s basically all you need to do, because once you’re on the 55 heading south, it’s a straight line to your destination.

If you’re coming from Orange County, let’s assume you know how to find the 55 south.

From the western reaches of L.A. or the Valley, take the 405 south to the 73 south, and that for a mile or so to the 55 south.

From the eastern regions of L.A. or the Valley, take the 5 south to the 55 south.

From the Long Beach region, take the 22 east to the 55 south.

Once on the 55 south, take that freeway till it ends. The freeway will "become" Newport Boulevard. Stay on that, continuing south.

At Pacific Coast Highway, continue straight across PCH - and Newport Boulevard will merge with Balboa Boulevard, and curve east along the Balboa Peninsula.

The location of our beach party is just south of the Balboa Pier, adjacent to Peninsula Park.

When driving, that’s just south of Main Street. For the closest parking, turn right on "A" Street (one block after Main). This leads to a small parking lot, with meters. It’s 25 cents per hour, and the meter must be fed till 6pm. After 6pm, parking is free. Spots are hard to come by in the prime beach hours, but early or late arrivals meet with better luck.

For non-metered parking, turn right on Palm (one block after Adams and 2 blocks before Main Street) and follow signs to Balboa Pier Parking. This is a larger lot, with payment due on leaving the lot - based on how much time you’ve been parked (the maximum is $8).

To find our spot on the beach - head south from the Balboa Pier. At the far end of Peninsula Park (small patch of grass with Huge American Flag) is a soccer field, and you’ll see a series of fire pits on the beach running along the Ocean side of the field. We’re going to try to get the southern-most fire pit.

We’ll have some sun shelters ... and - in order to snag the fire pit ... we’re going to be spending the entire day on the beach! So, come out for sun and waves, beautiful seaside scenery and spend the day! Or, come in the evening for the grill action and bonfire pyro-activity!

 Hope To See You There!

One of the reasons I like the beach we're going to so much is 'cause it reminds me of Jaws.

It's on a tiny spit of land between a bay and the ocean. The beach is very narrow, and even though you can't see the "pond" from this skinny beach, you could conceivably run over there in less than a minute. Heheh, there's even a ferry right there, across the pond! All we need are some boy scouts doing their badge swim!!

The weather forecast says if it does rain it'll be Thursday night into early Saturday morning.
So the bonfire is still on.

However, I must make a recommendation:

after a low pressure system passes through it gets breezy and VERY cold. So I recommend everyone bring some warm clothes for the evening. The nighttime temps after a storm passes through are usually in the upper 40's to low 50 (in SoCal anyway).

Oh, and iSm, I'd love to hear about your "casting sins to the sea" tradition.

innerSpaceman
09-19-2007, 04:23 PM
Jewish tradition from the east coastal lands. I guess it has something to do with getting a fresh start, which the guilt-ridden jews did by symbolically casting away their sins.

My more modern take is to cast away pretty much anything in your life or your self that you don't want anymore, or that you'd like to change. Wade out into the ocean with some bread, and meditate on the stuff you'd like to cast away. Tear a piece of bread for each one, and throw it into the ocean as far as you can. Rinse, repeat.

It's sort of the companion to Kevy's Sequioa campfire tradition of casting that which you wish to attract into the fires. This one is casting that which you wish to reject into the waters.

Oh, but speaking of Kevy and traditions: Please keep him in the dark about it being the Autumn Equinox. We don't need to see that particular Wiccan's dark parts again!!

innerSpaceman
09-19-2007, 06:52 PM
Yes, get to work on that. Try some hedonism ... that's always good for a sin or two.

As for the timing of cast off .... there's no set schedule. But Yom Kippur ends at sundown, when the water is warmest. So I'm picturing a roughly twilight time thing in the sea.

The festivities will be going on all day! zappop and I will be there early in the morning - - - come and frolic in the sunshine. Kite flying, ocean swimming, sunbathing, frisbee throwing, snack munching, pier partying ... or just come for the evening. Wienie roasting, sin casting, bon fireing, bacon grilling.

Here's the directions and parking information again.

Directions to the Beach Party Bonfire

I was really looking forward to a pleasant, sunny day at the beach ... but will find the silver lining in one of those thunderclouds.

I’m skeptical about the thunderstorms. Meteorologists always say there’s a possibility of them when a low pressure system moves thru the area because the air is cool, moist, and unstable. There’s no guarantee that a thunderstorm will form and quite often when they do it’s usually in the mountains & deserts cause that’s where the air lifts and produces the cumulonimbus clouds (anvil shaped thunderstorm clouds).

And there you have it.

I'm doing something special tonight for the twilight ritual - making my own bread.

I've decided to make up a batch of salt dough and then form it into shapes of things I need to cast away. Then, I'll bake them. They'll be really hard and weighty, so should make a pretty far toss and a nice little splash before breaking apart in the water.

Of course, I plan on sharing, so I'm also making up some generic bread pieces for others to toss.

Oh, and I'm also bringing a miniature wicker man for the bonfire. I'll bring enough ribbons for everyone to make a wish and tie on before tossing him in. :)

Those directions one more time:

With that picture, the pic of Keith, NirvanaMan warming his nuts in front of the fire, GusGus's view of Euromeinke's package and me changing from jeans to swimming trunks in front of the picnickers next to us... I came to the conclusion that there was a lot of nudity at this meet. AND Kevy wasn't even there!

Euro cast the first stone, I mean, sin, and what a sin it must've been, because the ocean came ROARING back at him!
