No. Don't ask don't tell is the rule of thumb (or whichever finger) in the comic book realm.

Of course those images were printed in the late 50's early 60's when it was a more innocent time. ;)
Something for Batman and Robin to look into (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/09/us/09aged.html?ex=1349668800&en=1ce207022eeb7775&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink).

Fred Wertham famously attacked Batman and Robin's sexuality in "Seduction of the Innocent" in 1954. 11 years later, Jules Feiffer wrote a fantastic commentary on it called "The Great Comic Book Heroes" - definitely worth reading.

Fred Wertham would later go on to attack his own sexuality, which he declared to be "depraved and sick." In the 1960s Wertham tried unsuccessfully to have himself banned from bookstores & I-5 rest stops, but could only go so far as to get his library card revoked. Nevertheless, this thread was supposed to be about the Harper's article, which I thought was pretty fascinating. The cartoon was a nice bonus after doing a search on Google.
