We're not so directly effected by the fires up near Santa Clarita but I don't want to throw more confusion into the mix in the other threads.

From KNBC (http://www.knbc.com/news/14390468/detail.html?dl=mainclick)

Roger Richcreek of the Angeles National Forest headquarters of the U.S. Forest Service said three major blazes burning in Los Angeles County -- the Ranch, Buckweed and Magic fires -- are projected to merge into one in about 48 hours, which would make a fire in excess of 80,000 acres.

The reason for the fires merging is "topography and fuels. There's nothing to keep them from burning together. It also depends on weather mostly. The humidity is expected to stay in the single digits for the next day," Richcreek said.

Let's hope this is wrong.

will it get a new name or will they call it the Magic Buckweed Ranch fire?

The "Magic" fire as it is called is pretty much directly behind my house. Earlier today we were under mandatory evacuation for a few hours. Then they died down for awhile, but now they are starting to flare back up. Some of my friends who live back in the canyon were given 2 minutes to leave at 12:30 am last night and still can't go back to their houses...

I grabbed my camera and press pass and managed to get some video. Take a look (these are still frames from video I took)

And finally an AMAZING video I got of a helicopter making a water drop...this is literally 200 feet from where I was standing:

I have a ton more footage from tonight (mostly firefighters battling flames and some shots of burning embers)..I'll post them later.

Thank you for posting. As soon as the news said Stevenson Ranch I was concerned.

We are getting a smokey smell in the air up here, from all the Santa Clarita fires.

Wow, "great" shots ... if that word can be applied to this situation.

My friend, Laurie, whom many of you know from MouseAdventure and other Disneyland outtings, lives out there ... and has most of her treasurable belongings in her car. There were times yesterday when her neighborhood was blocked off, but not evacuated (she could get in and out by foot).

I have two co-workers who live out that way, too. Oh, and one in Malibu. Sheesh, between that and all the other swankers potentially in the path of all the other fires, I've been a worried wreck.

But hey BarTopDancer, thanks for starting the northern fire thread. I didn't want to feel like we were getting short shrift around here!

I hope it's not too early to say how releived and grateful I am that everyone I know, affected by -omg- almost every one of the many fires in So.Cal have come thru unscathed and with hearth and home undamaged.

I feel so helpless .... being, as I am, in what seems likely the area furthest from any flames in the enitre southern half of the state.

My fervent wishes for continued good fortune to everyone.

I second this. My stomach was all twisted in knots yesterday and I resented being at work. It sucks feeling so completely useless, but I too am glad that so far everyone is well. And I'm also grateful to all those who were able to offer assistance and support.

I know the feeling. I'm so dying to drive some donations to the shelters in San Diego (they need it the most), yet I don't want to crowd the roads or get in the way.

If it is material donations, call them up and see if they will accept them via mail.

The USPS has flat rate boxes that holds a ton of stuff and are I think about $7.50.

What I've seen from TV broadcasts here is the Red Cross prefers cash donations then they can direct them more easily to the areas/shelters that need things.

Well, to friends. Just not yet to family, or in the workplace. Give it time.

Ok, every time I hear about the Buckweed fire on the TV, I can't help but think, "It'll be o'tay!" And then I think about Otay down in San Diego.

I have a weird mind.

Just read this snippit on the scanner feed from the Lake Arrowhead area:

confirmed looters last seen on SR189 - Chrysler New Yorker, older model; beige; traveling towards the MCH area

Looks like arson in the Arrowhead area too:

Valley of Enchantment - Firefighters and law enforcement are investigating reports of a possible arsonist between Camp Seely in Valley of Enchantment along Highway 138. According to reports, a witness saw and individual trying to start a fire, then flee. It appears that the individual was unsuccessful in the attempt. Deputies made an arrest at Highway 173 and Los Flores Ranch near Silverwood Lake at 9:19 PM.
I can't believe it...

Oh my. This CalTrans woman on NBC4 is wearing SO much make-up!

I'm sorry, but she's out there assisting with fires. Why the heck waste that much time for a load of lipstick and eyeliner?

I remember being interviewed on Channel 7 many years ago (high school - 1979, 80, or 81) when I was a member of the LA All City Marching Band (http://www.laallcityband.com). We were rehearsing at Dodger Stadium and I guess it was a slow news day. I remember thinking that the woman interviewing me looked positively frightening in her makeup (very orangey if I remember correctly).

But when I saw her (and myself) later on the news, she looked quite attractive.

Thankfully they edited out my messed up attempt at playing Yankee Doodle on my sousaphone (it was a part of one of the songs we were rehearsing)

My breathing has been much better today, so I just tried to go out to the store with Bill. Big mistake. The headache and cough are back after just a few minutes outside. It's relatively clear here in LB, I can't imagine what the conditions must be like where the smoke is really bad!
