Apparently, Isince I can't really breath that well, 'm not supposed to be going out. Although, I am really tempted to risk it to see GB tonight at the Mayan. But, if anyone wants my ticket and can go, let me know asap. You will probably be keeping me healthier. Doors at 7, show's at 8 (GB probably on at 9:00). Chris will have the ticket at the show.

Please, I'm feeling SO FRELLING OLD this week ... and I'm still going.
The Mayan is, I believe, INDOORS.
I'm getting there after 8, and I'm going to wander around till Gogol comes on. It's not like we sit during their performance.
(Plus, I'm going knowing that I will ache tomorrow)
Not to guilt you. Just, um, psychological warfare encouragement. :p

Yeah, we will be indoors. And, fresh drugs are now brewing at the pharmacy. The venue is 25 minutes away from home. I can do it. I can do it. I can do it. (I'm out of my mind) I can do it.

I guess I am not swanky enough. I have no idea who these bands are. They aren't Rockabilly are they? I love Rockabilly!
innerSpaceman

Um, no, not Rockabilly. Perhaps Romanian-tinged punk rock describes it best.
Not Afraid, I hope you're not sorry you went. I didn't spend a lot of time with you folks, but it was a great show (and I think their performance was better than last time).
Hmmm, I learned that anyone I fix my attention on at a Gogol Bordello concert will end up on stage.
Be careful whom you tell you can't go see bands on school nights ... they will bust you at the very next school nite band you see.
And friends all arrive in a single bunch .... even if they don't know each other.

Heheh, during American Wedding (a song about how our weddings are so completely lame), there's that part where all the music stops and Eugene just sings the refrain all slow and sultry and solo ... and I turned to Kelly and said, "now that's the kind of wedding I want." TeeHee.
Oh, and I timed it ... it took Eugene 2 minutes and 43 seconds before he took his shirt off.
And when he came all the way into the crowd near the end of the show and ended up a few feet away from us ... well, yummity yum yum.
All in all, a much tighter show than last time. Let's go see them again!

I was also intrigued by the part where Eugene identified the group of Eastern Europeans in the crowd by the way they were moving to the music ... because that's I was moving to the music. The slavic stuff goes straight to my soul. Even though I've never set foot in Eastern Europe, that's where my grandparents hail from.
It's in my blood. I was not brought up listening to any of that music. My parents were thoroughly Americanized and, by the time I was born in 1960, there were no strains of slavia running through any musical influences in my house. I was brought up on The Beatles and Beethovan.
Yet, I can feel it in my veins when the Romany stuff in Gogol comes to the fore ... every 12 seconds.
Odd. Genetic memory and ancestry and all that. Hmmmmm.

AHAHAHA! There's a new movie out called Wristcutters that posits an afterlife for those who kill themselves which is, alas, just a crappier version of this life ... with lousy jobs, ugly environs, and depresssed people.
One of the main characters is named Eugene, a Russian rocker patterned after Eugene Hutz. His car radio won't play anything but songs by his old band, which are actually songs by Gogol Bordello. Hahahaha!

Hehehe, a very sweet movie, for being about the limbo that successful suicidals are doomed to.
It wasn't exactly that the car radio played only Gogol Bordello, but that the movie's Eugene only had tapes of his old band. It was not an element of the doom of the dour afterlife, but just a devise to get some early Gogol Bordello tunes on the soundtrack. They used 3 songs from Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony (2002), which is the only early CD of theirs I have.
Using the early stuff made it believable that this Eugene's band was not a success ... and, for those in the know, made his suicide (on stage, during much heckling, by electrocuting himself with his guitar) all the more bittersweet because the band would have started to record some great stuff in a few years (their seminal work, Gypsy Punks, was released in 2005).
This film was such an odd bookend with the movie Life is Illuminated which hired Eugene Hutz to play a very different character than his usual persona, and the new Wristcutters instead wanted a character like Eugene's persona, and hired a different actor to perform it.
TeeHee.
Hmmm .... Being that a motion picture is released this week featuring those songs from Multi Kontra, I'm surprised Gogol Bordello did not play any of them (or anything from that album) at either of their two recent shows in L.A.

I like lots of different music, and post about it a lot here - I even put shows I hope to see on the LoT calendar. Of course, some of the things I like, someone else might find boring, silly, embarrassing, or even loathsome. But I keep posting.
I hope other people who have different tastes in music would do the same. Maybe I don't care as much for the Beatles or They Might Be Giants as most people here, but I love to hear what you're listening to, and what have been some of the great shows you've been to.

Most accessible perhaps, but far from best, what with most of the source video being taken with cell phones or, at best, digital still cameras with crappy video, and then further compressing that already crappy video/audio for streaming. I watched a couple videos last night from the show we were at...if I had seen those videos as my first impression of the band I doubt I would have given them a second pass.
innerSpaceman
11-07-2007, 11:42 AM
Well, I was also privy to lots of tape for their upcoming Austin City Limits DVD (it's being edited at my ex girlfriend's record label). It was much better quality than the YouTube stuff ... but I am able to look past poor video and sound quality and found the same unappealing (to me) music and stage antics in both formats.
Most people don't have access to anything but YouTube. It's certainly not the best tool ... but I really don't know of anything better for the general public. Sure, you can assess the music better elsewhere ... but unless a group is good enough to have some professional video of their act, the crappy YouTube videos are pretty much the best available for previewing how a live show might be.

Ugh - I may be revealing my Luddite roots here, but what happened to getting to know bands by listening to their music?
Nothing I've ever seen on YouTube can compare to seeing something live, something live that you're familiar with, that the stranger next to you is familiar with, and energy fills the room, and the band plays off of it.
To be sure I enjoy a good performer and performance, But watching Robert Fripp Rock the house while being seated on a chair to me was just as compelling as seeing Eugene from Gogol Bordello crowd surf on a drum.
But then, I'm aural.

I've even seen footage of shows I have been to and it just does not come close to the same experience.
Even if you are one of 100,000 people in the LA Coliseum watching Bruce Springsteen (this was like 1984 I believe), you are still a part of the experience, not just a voyeur. Every sight, every nuance is by your own choice, not the person editing the broadcast and deciding which camera angle to show on this cut.
My first experience with Ursula1000 was a live show. I knew nothing about him when I went - it was on complete blind faith (thanks to the LoT!). In retrospect, going to a live "show" of just a DJ seems weird - what is there to experience besides the music? One can hear a great deal of the show in one of his Mega Mixes. But it something completely different when one is in the right environment, sharing the collective experience with others.

Well, I'm not trying to convince you otherwise - I'm just marveling at my own disconnect with YouTube as a music review and selection tool. I mean I've gone to band's My Spaces to listen to their tracks, but I rarely if ever watch any linked video. But then most people are visual so I guess it only makes sense, it's why that stuff is there after all.
As for myself, I'm still on the fence - I've like what I've heard, but so far haven't been grabbed by them yet, and may listen to some more tracks (or borrow some) and see how it resonates with me. If they were playing Coachella I would certainly sit in on their set, and seeing them with fans is somewhat compelling on its own for me. But if it does turn out that their music bores me, I wouldn't want to be a wet blanket for my friends who feel otherwise - plenty other bands to see and all that.

I wanted my mother to read his novel, "And The Ass Saw The Angel."
So when the book came out in paperback, I asked him to sign a copy for her (I had friends who worked at his label). He signed it "Dear Merilee - Love, Nick Cave".
...and I've seen him many times. I was at the famous Paradiso show in Amsterdam and even recorded a "Tender Prey"-era show with my cassette walkman (I can digitize it, if anyone's interested). I never ever ever want to hear "Red Right Hand" again.
