Story (http://entertainment.aol.co.uk/rowling-fairy-tales-in-charity-sale/article/20071101064009990002)
Author J K Rowling has hand-written and illustrated just seven copies of the Tales Of Beedle The Bard. It is her first work since the last Harry Potter book was published in July.
While one copy will go under the hammer at Sotheby's in London next month, the others will be given away by Rowling to those most closely connected with the Potter books.
The Tales Of Beedle The Bard played a central role in the seventh book about the boy wizard, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. A volume, which contains five wizarding fairytales, was left to Hermione Granger by Hogwarts headteacher Albus Dumbledore, and provided clues to help Harry and his friends defeat his nemesis Lord Voldemort.

Only the first one be considered "First Edition?" All the rest wouldn't really be worth anything.

As soon as it stops continuing to fill her bank account with obscene amounts of money would be my guess.

I can't believe that this will never actually be widely distributed. Come on with the massive fanbase? I'd bet it comes out in less than a year.

I think so too.
I think this is just Rowling hyping the idea to get people to drool for it.
Then she'll sell it.
But first, I bet there will be some ultra swanky leather bound edition that costs like $49 or something like that. Everyone who is a diehard fan will buy it and then the paperback version will come out for like $24.99 or something like that later on.

See, I was thinking the other way around.
Sell the leather bound first and make people think that this is the only version that will be available. Get the fanbase to shell out the big bucks for the deluxe copy. Then a couple of months later she can say because of demand, we'll release the hard cover and then the paperback.
I'm thinking as an evil merchandiser might...

Oh yeah well I think you're WRONG. I bet there'll be a hard cover at $75, a fabulous gay edition bound with Dumbledore's enchanted nipple clamps at $125, and a special "I sold my soul to Satan for a bestselling children's series" edition, bound in human skin for $1255.99 (at Wal-Mart). So THERE. Nyah!

Of the one copy of this hand-written edition that is being auctioned, yes. But is there any doubt that this will be published as a commercial book in some form or another?
Ugh, there's a reason Rowling didn't do the illustrations for the Potter books.

Which, of course, would spell "poos." Which is my opinion of the movies so I take it as a hidden message she agrees with me.

She's going to write what she is going to write so why not write for a good cause. Some day her fame will be over. She'll be a blip on the pop-culture radar. Our kids will be hearing about the Harry Potter craze on VH1 I love the '00s.

Would you prefer for her to keep the money? No, I'd prefer her to give a large sum to charity, period. Sure, print up a large cardboard check and get photographed, that's cool. But this whole "I wrote it with my own hands" stuff that gets fans into a froth of ecstasy is just self-serving, IMHO. Why even tell us she's giving copies to friends? "Oh by the way, I totally gave my friends something WAY valuable as a gift. Yup, I did that."
Some day her fame will be over. She'll be a blip on the pop-culture radar. Our kids will be hearing about the Harry Potter craze on VH1 I love the '00s.I dont' think she's going back down into a blip, same way George Lucas is still wealthy, well known, and influential. With her kind of money she can start any company she wants, much as Lucas did, and keep her name rolling for generations. That is, if she's smart.
I don't put sequels/prequels/side stories/oh wait here's another Hogwarts series etc past Rowling, same way Lucas revived his franchise, especially in 20 years. She's young yet, and even when she goes, perhaps the fan fic will finally get its day on the shelves, if not sooner, a la Lucas' massive book empire, written by plenty of Tom Dick and Harry fanboys, really.
How quickly do the faithful turn.Heh, like I said, I haven't been a big fan since book 5. Even then, I only originally got into them because I worked at a children's library, and that was about 3 years after the first book came out, so I was late to the game. I won't deny the awesomeness of those first four books - they stand up against any children's literature ever written - but celebrity antics, blech.

But without the auction of the book the money would come from her own pocket. With the auction, someone gets to donate a large sum to a worthy charity, and in return gets a very limited edition of a book... whether it becomes available in print is moot, because there will only ever be 7 handwritten versions. That's not a big run, really.
If I were Bruce Wayne or some other philanthropic billionaire I'd buy it !!

She already does give very large sums to charity- she's quite well known for her philanthropy. She's also still pretty famous, so I don't think this is a bid for attention. Believe me, when she gets to be like Oprah I will be the first one in line to criticize, but for now I think she's done a nice thing and I'm not going to knock her for that.

Fairy tale book handwritten, illustrated by J.K. Rowling sells for $4 million (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/features/20071213-0752-people-rowling.html)
LONDON – A book of fairy tales created, handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling sold for nearly $4 million at auction Thursday.
The buyer, London art agent Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox, now has one of only seven copies of “The Tales of Beedle the Bard,” which is leather bound with silver mounts.
The book originally had been expected to sell for about $100,000. The standing-room-only crowd at Sotheby's auction house applauded as bidding topped the 1 million pound ($2 million) mark. ...<snip>

And you could loan the book to a museum for a lot of money for the kids to file by it? And your own kids could sell it for a lot of money if they ever get addicted to crack and are broke?)

Reviews of the stories, and photos
Amazon.com to J.K. Rowling: Thank You
(http://www.amazon.com/beedlebard)
We're incredibly excited to announce that Amazon has purchased J.K. Rowling’s The Tales of Beedle the Bard at an auction held by Sotheby’s in London. The book of five wizarding fairy tales, referenced in the last book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is one of only seven handmade copies in existence. The purchase price was £1,950,000, and Ms. Rowling is donating the proceeds to The Children's Voice campaign, a charity she co-founded to help improve the lives of institutionalized children across Europe.
The Tales of Beedle the Bard is extensively illustrated and handwritten by the bard herself--all 157 pages of it. It's bound in brown Moroccan leather and embellished with five hand-chased hallmarked sterling silver ornaments and mounted moonstones.
Enjoy these first images of the book. We'll be adding reviews of each of the fairy tales and more photos of this beautiful object as we can get them up in the coming hours (if you want to be sure of a link that will permanently work, use www.amazon.com/beedlebard). For the curious of mind, Amazon editors are now taking questions about the tales from all comers on our discussion boards (located further down this page).

I beleive that one of the conditions of sale was that the buyer was not allowed to publish or copy it.
But maybe the stories could appear in another form?

I was thinking more along the lines of some kind of announcement from Rowling that the book would come out in some sort of mass market media with the proceeds possibly going to charity. She did something similiar with the two (or was it three) books for Comic Relief.
With Amazon putting out "summaries" of the chapeters I'd guess it would put more pressure on her to put them out for everyone.

I bought it at Toys R Us today. There was a deal where you got a $5 gift card with purchase. One of the cool things about the book is that there is a commentary after each story by Dumbledore. The stories were very nice, but I really enjoyed the commentary.
