View Full Version : Tiki Meet!

Cats and Kittens, dig this ultra-swank news.

Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room will soon be a phoenix from the ashes. Current jist is that the birds will sing again on March 12th. That is, the Saturday before MouseAdventure! Everyone will be a bit busy then, so how about a kick-back Tiki Meet the week afterwards?

I'm thinking Sunday March 20th, about 2pm, in the Tiki wait area. If you've got Hawaiian shirts and/or leis, break 'em out. Many of us got leid when we closed down the TR last fall - dust those off! I'll print out some legible copies of the Hawaiian War Chant, and we'll toast the tweeting birds with some Dole Whip Floats!

Hope to see you there!

Kudos for making it a Sunday! I believe that Saturdays are pretty much blocked out for us until after summer.

We'll do our best to be there and be tikified.

I'll only be in town for MA weekend, so I'm hoping the Tiki Room will be open for business on March 12th. mmm... Dole whip float

Hmm, maybe I need another copy of the schedule. Mine definitely shows the 12th as a blocked day.

edited to add: You are correct about the blockout dates.

I have an older version of the schedule and it has apparently changed since then. Glad I checked as it appears some other days have changed as well.

Hell, if you guys are still there in the evening on the 12th, I may stop by for a TR visit after work. But I think the TR does deserve its own meet that's not tangled up in MA plans, complete with shirts and leis.

All right.. its official. Ponine and offspring, otherwise known as Najo, will be attending the Tiki meet.

Since you will meet at two, we will spend the bulk of our morning in the park, and leave a couple hours after the meet. You know, returning to first grade and all that rot in the next morning.

If anyone NOW has a reccomendation for leis, pass it on... my son needs a very flamboyant one. ;)

Party supply stores usually have a "hawaiian" section with leis, grass skirts and
such.

Here's a link for Oriental Trading Co., they have every piece of party schlock under the sun that one could ever desire:

http://www.orientaltrading.com/otcweb/application?namespace=main&origin=searchMain.jsp&event=link.home&tabId=Home <----Search for luau

Thrift stores are also a good source for hawaiian shirts of all sizes.

If anyone NOW has a reccomendation for leis, pass it on... my son needs a very flamboyant one. ;)

Party City usually carries some Hawaiian costumes and decorations. There's one in that Walmart shopping center off the 5 near Disneyland (the Euclid exit I think). Also if you know any CMs, ask them to buy you a lei from the off-site Company D; last time I checked, they had some really great ones!

as a matter of fact, I still need to go lei shopping!!!! The kid has a shirt, I have one to borrow.. now we need leis.

I know that we all just got home from MA, and we're all sore, but we're still on right?

I'm delusional... and a worry wart. Truer words were never spoken. Dang it.. its MY day and I want to see MY friends!
hmm.. that was a bit testy.
Well, either way, my son is stoked, and keeps asking when we get to go to the Tiki Meet. Funny, I must have said it out loud.

No one knows it's there! Panther and I were in line, or in a store.. Sunday around 7, and the CM said to family with young boys.. "how did you do on Buzz Lighttyear? Did you get more than 1,000? 10,000?"
Blank stares from the family.
I think people stopped reading the map, and just plain dont go into Tomorrowland.
We walked on twice before 9am that day, and fastpassed for our team mates so they could go after the event.

Aloha cats and kittens of the lounge! I just wanted to let you all know that I had a great time with you all in the Enchanted Tiki Room. :snap: :snap: I would have like to have stayed longer, but I am borrowing my mom's car while my truck is in the shop for repairs. She called me to ask me to get her some pork chops from the store, so I was obliged to go and get them since it is her car that I am using. Hopefully next time I'll have more of my own time to spend with all you Lounge Cats! ;)

I made the two hour drive home.. thanks for a lovely time everyone! For those of you I never met, next time!
If you were sitting on the other side of the group from myself and my offspring in the Tiki room, chances are, I never figured out who you were.

(And I'm actually very embarressed by this)

GusGus, it took me a full ten seconds staring right at you to realize why you looked familiar and that I did in fact know you! Now, if only one of these days I can meet your sweetheart!

And who was the tall young man with the fabulous hair???
So many questions, so little time. Must sleep!

While doing Tiki was great fun, the highlight of the day was indeed the PotC!!! As we were winding through the end of the ride (right next to the people waiting to ride), GusGus heard someone say, "I want to ride with them."

GusGus, it took me a full ten seconds staring right at you to realize why you looked familiar and that I did in fact know you! Now, if only one of these days I can meet your sweetheart!I (GusGus's sweatheart) was one of the two gentlemen wearing am orange/mustard Shag tiki shirt (pretty darned funny that Chris and I had matching Shag shirts while NA & GusGus had matching purple Shag shirts - it wasn't planned folks!). You can see my picture in my avatar or a Disney/Wedding photo of us here (http://home.mindspring.com/~kevin_elder/id2.html).

And who was the tall young man with the fabulous hair???I do believe you are referring to TheatreTech (http://www.xenarchy.com/LoT/member.php?u=59)

You are very welcome.
Let me just say, if you arent breaking hearts as you walk through a room, be patient. Your time is coming.

Now... how do I convince my six year old that he can't have hair like that quite yet?
About 6pm last night:" Mommy, I decided I dont want a mohawk, I want my hair like the tall boy with the Jack shirt at the Tiki meet."

So.. I was stuck. I loved it, but it wasnt quite... first grade. ;) But I also cant stop him later on.. I mean come on, mine was fushcia and I was a Madonna wanna be.

Of course, Ponine came a little late, or she'd know full well who the tall young man with the awesome hair was, as did the rest of Adventureland and part of Main Steet as 20 of us, umm, subtly got is attention.

I was late, because we ran by y'all at 1:55 to go buy leis. We snuck by so as to not be seen un-leid.
The man in the Adventure land store was very sloooooow, which in turn made us late.
I am sorry I missed that! Did we have 29? Wow... cant wait to see everyone's pics. A bunch of mine are blurry.

The offspring and I entered Disneyland at 8:30 and ran to Buzz… riding in a 15 minute standby line. We then fast passed all things in our path to Splash, stopping only for the “way too scary time of year, Christmas is better” ride on Mansion. We rode pooh, then dilly dallied our way back to Tomorrowland to talk to Stitch. What a riot that was.
The offspring had told the CM at guest relations it was my birthday, so I had to wear the sticker. Which, made Stitch sing. Anyone know that CM? Great personality. Told me that one could never have too much coffee. (I think my son had more fun listening to people say happy birthday than I did!)
After a quick lunch at Pizza Port, we tried racing to Adventure land to meet the Tiki Folks.
“Mommy, they ALL have leis! We have to have some!” We snuck by Tiki folks in the crowd, ran to the store to get some. Picked quickly and I got in line…. Then, what seemed like an hour, and only two purchases ahead of me, it was my turn. We left.. we joined the Dole whip line… I looked across the path… OMG look at all those people. I sent the offspring across the path to Mickey ”Fire High Five” Lumbo, which I think took him two minutes to get across, only to have ML walk to us in the dole whip line at the same time. Poor kid.
I was in line with DP when two of my co-workers found me. They got to listen to MickeyLumbo talk about phone calls, and then informed me they had never been in the Tiki Room. I invited them to stay, alas, they left.
The offspring loved meeting the new people who are just as nuts about D-land as mommy is, and not grumpy about it like daddy. ;)
I don’t know that he remembered the last time he was in the Tiki Room. He was probably.. two? But to hear everyone singing, and then to have everyone beating the drums… made his day.
Then he wanted to ditch everyone, but they choose to ride pirates… okay, that’s safe he thinks. <Insert evil laugh> That was a mob scene of a line… I had to explain the dynamics of “good game” to him, and then we were okay. To EVERYONE – I didn’t even think to remember that he’s been taught to only give FIRE high fives! I’ve been trying for over a year to teach him that you can’t give everyone you encounter a fire five. I’m sorry I didn’t tell him to hold back sooner!
Anyway.. we LOVED riding pirates! I haven’t laughed that hard in a very very long time. He was sure we were going to sink, but that was all the adults talking that made him think we would. He got wet, very wet, and he pulled GusGus’s hair, and didn’t “think it looked good” as we tried to go up the hill. He loved doing the wave with everyone, and said it was the best ride on Pirates he’s ever had!
I wish I had known people were going to Blue Bayou, I’d have planned that in our day. He’d have loved that.
Thank you thank you thank you. My son thanks everyone, esp any male person who talked to him! He has a great fascination with men who will talk to him, and like what he likes. (it’s that whole, daddy doesn’t really do things I like, and talking to me isn’t something that happens often unless its about a video game) I think on the way home I heard, among many other things… “Your friends are cool mommy! I really do want hair like that tall guy. Everyone really liked my shirt, didn’t they! That was super fun! We should have rode more stuff with them! We forgot to go on the BIG boat! (oops) And You’re the coolest mommy ever”
I haven’t had that much fun on my birthday in a very long time. I owe you all!

I don't know what happened there but, sometime after hugging Tracilicious (who we ran into in the Emporium) my hip bone connects to the thigh bone started hurting - BAD so I got to be the old woman for the night. Man, I love this group. What a great day. You guys are the best.

Special thanks to Mousepod, who drove all the way down from NoCal for this! We're flattered and overjoyed to welcome a fantastic addition to our extended family! Hate to make you do that drive more often, but we'd love to hang out again when you do. "One of us, one of us..."

Even more thanks to Mousepod's wife for letting him come down and play, while she had to work all weekend! :( He showed us pics of the dogs that you sent him, so cute. :) We took good care of him and left him in one piece (when we last saw him on his way to WOD...we take no responsibility for any of his possible overspending at the park. :p )

I can't believe we bumped into Tracilicious that evening at the Emporium! Although it was right by the new retro merch  which attracted us like moths to the flame...the very overpriced and tempting flame.....mmm.

Thanks again to all our looney friends...and those who got pics, we'd love to see 'em.

Things I learned from the Tiki Meet:

- It's still impossible to fit 25 people in a PoTC boat
- Group lei's in the Tiki Room tend to get rather noisy
- TheatreTech is very good at ignoring large groups
- The Dole Whip movie is still cheesy
- Some of the Tiki birds are actually white!

"Oh, there's Matt, he's in the waiting area, getting a Dole Whip."

"Don't think so."
"How could he NOT? We're a huge group of dorks in leis and Hawaiian shirts."
"Matt!"
"Hey Matt!"
"He didn't hear us."
"MATT!" "Matt! "Matt!!"
"Shall we do a count of three?"
"One, two, three."

No, she didn't have one of those. At least, I don't think she did. I wasn't there, of course. :)

But one thing you should know about Hawaiian moms... They can make a full course meal out of a can of Spam, so a package of porkchops is even more extravigant! :D

At first I didn't see everyone because, for some reason, I was extremely concentrated on getting my Dole Whip that I'd been craving for so long. I went to the inside line because it was shorter. Although, it proved to move slower. Once I was in line I saw you guys standing across the way. I think I waved to Greg because he was looking in my general direction, but I don't think he saw me. (It is Greg, right? I should know these things by now.:)

I must say, I wasn't expecting 20 people to be calling my name from across Adventureland and I was quite confused for a few seconds before I realized what was going on. Despite the strange looks from the people in the waiting area and me having a look of complete confusion, it made my visit much more memorable.

Ponine, I'm glad your son had fun. It was one of my best rides on Pirates yet. Definitely the best visit to the Tiki Room I've had. It makes me smile to know he like my hair. (It's okay, I get plenty on conversation about it. ;)) Shattering stereotypes is what I like doing. My parents don't put too many restrictions on how I present myself [to a certain extent] because they know I don't let it change my person. (Sunday was more...mild.) Anyway, tell him I say "thank you, but wait until you're older and listen to your mom".

Thank you everyone. I had a blast on Sunday.

Sorry for the delay (especially to innerSpaceman and MickeyLumbo--thanks for your patience).

You can see all the pictures at:

Random memories from July 25, 2004:
--Many of us took pictures of every sign and tiki in the tiki garden.
--All of us getting leied by innerSpaceman.
--innerSpaceman laying us with Lays (the potato kind).
--Trying to read Tiki War Chant lyrics, printed too small to read in the dark.
--Enjoying frosty pineaple Dole whips for the last time, until 8 months later.
--Riding Pirates of the Caribbean as a large group--and getting wet.
--Getting mistaken for a tourist group from Hawaii on Jungle Cruise.
--Getting mistaken for Cast Members by park guests.
--Watching and meeting Aladdin & Jasmine at Aladdin's Oasis on its last day, prior to the 8-month refurbishment.

Pictures from the recent Tiki AFTER REFURB Meet on March 20, 2005.

You can see pictures at: www.disneydaniel.com (http://www.disneydaniel.com) which should link you to http://disneydaniel.smugmug.com

Random memories from March 20, 2005:

--This Tiki Meet proves that even in the middle of spring break AND the 2fer, you can still have a great time at Disneyland with a large group of swanky people!

--Seeing the Tiki Room area and Tiki Juice Bar lines over-flowing with people all day long.

--Trying to fill a Pirates boat BEYOND capacity with 25 people, and a Cast Member not allowing SIX people already crammed into one row! ...so two people had to get out.

--Our weighted-down Pirates boat going soooo sloooowww after the second waterfall (and the rest of the ride) that another boat bumped us from behind. It meant we stayed wet in the boat longer!

--People in-line paying lots of attention to our Pirates boat as we slowly drifted back toward the return dock. After doing the wave several times, someone standing in-line said: "Look at all the fun they're having!"

--On the Matterhorn: climbers waving back at us, and confetti bursting out from the top after Mickey plants a 50th flag.

--Watching "backstage" Fantasmic! from the best spot! (Thanks, Not Afraid and EuroMeinke!)

--Also, riding Splash Mountain, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Matterhorn, it's a small world, and Disneyland Railroad Excursion with a fun group of Disney fans! All of you even made the lackluster "Fantasy in the Sky" fireworks enjoyable!

---Meeting and getting reaquainted with so many wonderful people from Lounge of Tomorrow!

I must not... thats it. I'm a figment of my own imagination.

Mr Fusion I give credit to, you were sitting right in front of me I think, so you got the kid on the boat... but almost every PotC line pic cuts off at DisneyDaniel.. and I think I might be in one Tiki Room pic.. waaaaaaaayyy over on the side. But my screen here is very dark and I cant tell if I am really in the pic.

I should check the boards more often. I would have known there was a meet. My in-laws ended up leaving a day earlier than we thought they were. We thought about trying to make it to the standard sunday meet, but I had no idea what time it was, or even if it still existed. I couldn't believe it when I was looking at the new retro merch and Michael told me to look over and there was Not Afraid! (Actually, he recognized Euromonkey first.) It was so awesome to meet some familiar names and see a few posters again. Even if it was only for a few minutes. We've decided to get passes again next year after our WDW trip, so hopefully we'll see more of all of you.
