Ike Turner dead at 76

San Diego — Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogrelike image as the man who brutally abused former wife Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76.

Turner died at his San Marcos home, Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner's career, told The Associated Press.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death, which was first reported by celebrity Web site TMZ.com.More on the story (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20071212.wike_turner1212/BNStory/Entertainment/home?cid=al_gam_mostview).

Wow, I almost simulposted this, canceled due to being unable to paste a link while on my phone.

One heck of a scumbag, but at least Tina turned his ugliness into some amazing work.

Best of Ike & Tina is playing on the jukebox in the pool hall I'm at. Adios Ike.

I wonder what sort of sense of relief Tina Turner is feeling today. Now it really is over.

"Proud Mary" used to be my parents' song until I told them what the song was really about.
:D

Yeah, that's why I asked, BE - because I have long heard that the "reading in" to the song has been denounced by the band. It's about a riverboat, yo.

Yeah, I had heard that it was denounced as well.

As for me, I hardly care what the song was really about. It's a good rollick...

(Actually, me too. Especially the CCR original. Odd fact: I have both danced to "Proud Mary" on a football field, and played it.)

The song was written on a steamboat called the "Mary Elizabeth" owned by the Grafton family.

It's about a riverboat. No? Can't we settle this like any self-respecting animation fans?

B: Pot season!
H: Riverboat season!
B: Pot season!
H: Riverboat season!
B: Pot season!
H: Pot season!
B: Riverboat season!
H: Well, if you say so!
