Yeah, I've been to this site before. Someone who knew I longed for an office of modern equipment done exclusively in H.G. Wells/Jules Verne style turned me on to it.

Now to raise the $90K I'll need to buy the custom furnishings and customize all the equipment.

Steampuck as a genre doesn't really appeal to me, but I must say that would be an awesome monitor to have (the keypboard is cool to look at but as a very fast touch typist it doesn't look like something I'd want to actually use.)

CoasterMatt
12-26-2007, 09:03 PM
It's been awhile since I had my copper plate computer (with matching mouse, monitor and keyboard).

The next build of the Atomic Cookie Blast Furnace is gonna have a very different look- if I didn't already start buying stuff, I might go back to the steampunk genre.

That's cool, but too much like 2-dimensional set design and could be much improved upon - e.g. forget that flat cut-out representation of piping - put in some real brass tubing to replace the painted conduit already on the walls - I think the look is much cooler when made to actually be functional as well as decorative.

I like the steampunk genre aesthetically but can't think of anything besides William Gibson's "The Difference Engine" that was a good thing in the genre (I mean, besides elements of Jules Verne's writing). I liked the steampunk elements in The Golden Compass but mostly because they were pretty minimal and mostly in the background. The movie version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a good example of it as well but the movie thoroughly sucks (but not because of the steampunk).

While not strictly steampunk, I think my favorite title is Diamond Age.

Oooh... or even wood and stained glass. I used to do the kind of stained glass where you applied the color with eyedroppers and outlined the image in something called liquid leading. That would be totally easy to do!

I think I might make a trip to Bohemian Crystal at the fabric district first though. They have a ton of jewelry parts for dirt cheap (including some cameos and a gob of assorted brassy things), and I'm betting that the jewelry district might even have some clock gears by the pound or something.

So, first we need a trip downtown, then a night for making the goods! :D

Oh, and apparently, that gear clock is also available at Target:

F'ing awesome. Though I appreciate the keyboard more than the monitor myself.

Though I do find myself conflicted with design for designs stake, adding nothing practical in the execution and in many ways impacting the functionality of the original design detrimentally. Hmm internal conflict on this one will not be quickly resolved.

Retrofitting in reverse is certainly a form over function enterprise, but as works of techno-art I stand impressed. It will be interesting to see how the movement progresses. Perhaps some of the I.D. issues will be tackled to improve the overall functionality.

From Tref's thread on abandoned buildings (http://www.loungeoftomorrow.com/LoT/showthread.php?t=7671), I poked around the site and found a place in Ryhope, England that EH needs to raid:

Ryhope, England is home to an abandoned water pumping station that almost seems like a retrofuturistic structure straight out of a cyberpunk novel. This deserted structure is a monument to the Victorian era of industrialization, dating back to the middle of the 19th Century. It was an important step in the modernization of clean water distribution in an era where urban densification and disease went hand in hand. Though the station is no longer in active use all of the machinery still works, a true testament to the capabilities of Victorian English engineers.http://weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/england-abandoned-structure-urban-exploration.jpg

I found this place here (http://weburbanist.com/2008/02/27/7-abandoned-wonders-of-the-european-union-from-deserted-castles-retrofuturistic-factories/).

I'm starting in on the 3rd book. They are very enjoyable. A comedy of manners with dark undercurrents.

It also reminds one that a well equipped parasol can be most efficacious when one finds oneself in bothersome circumstances concerning danger to ones dignity.

And yes, SM, there are... eh-em... gentlemen of peculiar sensibilities; as well as an eccentric inventorix with a scandalous predilection for men's clothing. (and if that's not bad enough, she's French!)
