So we recapped '07 (http://www.loungeoftomorrow.com/LoT/showthread.php?t=7096), but what do we resolve for '08?

I resolve to continue to make time for artistic endeavors.

I resolve to get myself published somehow, even if it doesn't make me money.

I resolve to be better about contacting family and far flung friends. (do I say that every year?)

I resolve to go to Scotland to visit a friend. Yay, an excuse to visit Scotland!

I don't do resolutions, but I'm happy to post intentions.

I intend to:

- go to Tokyo (I've got the tickets - woo hoo!)
- start the podcast I've been meaning to start for a couple of years now
- keep getting fun contract gigs that pay me to write
- keep writing stuff I'm not getting paid for
- vote

I intend not to:
- put too much hope in previously mentioned vote

I made a resolution to not make resolutions. So far it's the only one I've kept.

I will try to not accrue new debt.
I hope to travel to NY and back to SF

I am firmly in the no resolutions group, though:

I intend to get a job that I enjoy, regardless the pay. If I enjoy it enough, it will eventually come with its reward.

I intend to appreciate the skill set I was blessed with and have worked so hard to maintain. These are vital skills, even if it's not apparent on the surface.

I intend to complete a portfolio with writing samples by mid-February.

I intend to learn to be a better snowboarder.

I intend to not break any of my boyfriend's bones.

I intend to go scuba diving this year in Florida.

I intend to get a kitten.

I intend to begin searching for a house this summer.

My Resolutions and Intentions for 2008
By Mark, age 37

- To be more social
- To be more swanky
- To dine a nice places
- To swear off McDonalds totally. (Yeah, had it only maybe a dozen times this year, but I like Egg McMuffins.)
- To return to Walt Disney World
- To write more
- To draw more
- To find work
- To find a home
- To read more
- To see Chicago as many times as I can. ;)
- To camp more
- To buy needle and thread so once I find my soul, I can put it back.
- and as always, continue to do as I do every night - try to take over the world...

I'm also a no-resolution person, simply because I feel we should always be striving for better things for ourselves.

However, my current priority is:

To surround myself with what matters the most - good friends, good vibes, good health, and good work.

No resolutions here. Hopes and intentions though.
I intend to continue losing weight by eating right and biking as much as possible.
I intend to be more social. I'll never get a girlfriend as long as I cower in my straight life.
I intend to clean up my house and get rid of the crap. I have a lot of crap that needs to go away.
I intend to enjoy my (likely limited) time with my paraplegic hound. I intend to be patient with him in spite of his penchant for being annoying. I need to remember his good points, because he is an old hound and we don't know how long he'll be with us. He's fine now, but he's 13. That's old for a hound.
I intend to spend more time with friends.
I hope to get more trips to DLR.
I hope to get some work done on my house. I have a brand new bathroom sink that has sat on my living room floor for months that needs to be installed. My walls need to be painted, and so does the outside.
I hope to get some pictures posted in the house. I have a few up from our wedding, and one of my mom, but I need more. My mom just sent me a few wallet-sized family pics, and she has promised me more in the future. They need to be displayed.

More will come to me, I'm sure. I want my head to be in good space, and spend my time with people, with people who matter to me. Those connections take time and energy to nurture, which is something I'm not always good at doing. I kind of let things take their own pace, their own course, which is not good.

No resolutions. My desires are ever changing and I refuse to commit myself to any of them for an entire year. I know that 2008 will bring me an abundance of love, travel, fun, adventure, money, creativity, and much more. I highly anticipate the details of the unfolding.

Surely you have enough seniority to get away with bludgeoning just one tourist. Lord knows there are plenty that are just asking for it.

Hopes & dreams for 2008 in no particular order:

to succeed in getting a publishing contract
to spend more time with good friends
to keep the good streak of reasonable good health for another year
to start some DIY like painting the apartment
to enjoy some more swankings in 2008
to always have a project going to expand my horizons
to have time to relax and enjoy the ride

I almost never make resolutions, but I intend to:

Cook at home more
Work my @$$ off
Sell some houses
Be there for my dad as he deals with his health
Drink less Coke
Eat more fresh food

I would like to:

Go on the Panama Canal Cruise (depends on my achieving #3 by the end of January though)
Go to Florida (hopefully mom gets her time share trade while I'm still with the mouse, then all we need are flights)

For me it's an incorrect use of the word "intention". I should say I "hope to".

flippyshark
12-31-2007, 07:49 PM
"I intend to" sounds less binding than "I resolve to." I won't have to feel as guilty about not fulfilling an intention. Plus, it's less portentious. I can actually take steps to keep up an intention and it doesn't feel like any big deal. Doing something to keep a resolution just puts a big burden on it.

Cadaverous Pallor

I guess I don't take the word "resolve" as seriously as others do. That's why I don't use the word "promise". ;) Thankfully, the tradition isn't "I promise" or "I swear" or even "I dedicate myself to". I can handle setting my resolve in a certain direction without stress.

I'm going to go with "an intention is something you hope will happen without requiring much real work on your own part so if it doesn't happen you can't really be upset but you aren't out anything either."

I intend to wash dishes the same evening they are used.

I gave up resolutions long ago. I have dedicated the last few years to specific "projects":

2006: Get my finances straightened out. Done.
2007: Get my health in line. Done.

Dedicating the entire year to these has resulted in major lifestyle changes that have kept me from falling back into old habits.

2008? I'm not sure yet. I need to get an agent and try to make some advances as an actor. I also need to develop a social life. Both are scary. Both will take interpersonal skills I need to work on.

I don't have to decide right away. It's a year long project, right?

Please do. I wouldn't ever like to lecture someone on their choices in life, but a few days ago we took my father-in-law to the hospital. He was there for 3 days. He now has to be on oxygen most of the time. :(

For years, I intended to quit smoking. Finally, I resolved to (and made a promise to Tori) and actually did it. If I have any resolutions in '08, it's to loose the damn weight I gained when I quit and keep it off. I also resolve to pay down my credit cards- I don't owe a lot, so barring any unforeseen problems I should be able to do it by years end.
