Ok, kids, here's the first cut for the contest. Lemme know what you think. Please say whatever comes to mind.

I can say one thing - trying to convey a message in 30 seconds or less is friggin hard, especially when certain stock footage must be used according to the rules.

Link (http://web.mac.com/tdsproductions/iWeb/Total%20Dynamic%20Studios/DoveTake1.html)

I still have a couple days left to tweak it, so please note any changes that should be made, etc.

This was truly a LoT of effort - NA's bathroom, CP's brave acting, and MBC's original music. :snap:

Enjoy!

Nice touch with the mirror reflection...

Looks great! feels like it takes to long for the dove to come out and hit the luffa... like maybe take out half a second of the looking at the dove before having the liquid come out? you might understand what i mean.... but its great as is..

I hate to say it if it was performed just for that but the music doesn't seem to fit right, to me. It might just be that it is a bit too loud but it felt very male for a very feminine scene.

And I agree that there's something just a tad off in the "applying soap to loofah bit.

But otherwise a very good effort.

A couple of things:

The Dove bottle needs to be facing the camera. Flat. Not at an angle. We need to see all of the front of the bottle.

Jenn's hair later on in the commercial needs to look better than the first shot. I think her hair looked better in the before-Dove section. The whole before and after thing...

I like the shot at the end. But, and this isn't meaning to offend anyone, what is the actress doing in that last shot? It needs to be more clear. If she's using Dove and all is well, she should be lathering her shoulder or arms up and we should see it. Right now, it looks like she's... well... just rubbing herself.

The music maybe should play up the whole Paris motif? Squeaky accordion music at first and then a more sensual Piaf-like sound towards the end?

Is Jenn in Paris? It looks like it.

The graphic next to Jenn in the shower with the Dove bottle should be smoother, again more sensual.

I like the shower squeak at the beginning.

I love the way the bathroom looked.

I love Jenn.

I think this is a cool commercial.

:)

Heehee! I don't think I can have much perspective on this because my initial reaction is "that doesn't look like a commercial because that's ME!"

Anyway, I'd agree with the above. Cut the squeezing scene a bit. I'd slow down the part where I'm washing my shoulders/neck, I'm moving too fast against the slow music.

I also agree with Brad on the last shot - I was like, dude, what am I washing?? :D Did any of the rest of it look better? I know I tried to wash visibly (back and arms) but of course I have no idea what it looked like from your side.

Is the pink bottle part of the stock footage? The fact that it doesn't match the ivory colored bottle we used is a kind of a shame.

I wish my hair looked better, and I wish there was time for a reshoot! ;) But all the angles are great, the dropping soap looked better than I imagined. I disagree with Alex on the music, I think it matches the theme of luxury very well.

Can't wait for the second draft!

I had to watch without sound as I am still stuck in a cubicle farm.

The only thing I would add is that the transitions need to be smoother - most of them seem quite abrupt. This may be because it is an early cut, but I thougth I would mention it.

Can't see it.

Sorry, it won't play for me either.Once it downloaded, I just clicked on the QuickTime logo and the player popped up. Hopefully that helps.

DAMN! I like it!

I agree that you could afford to cut a few frames from the applying-Dove-to-loofah shot - there's that little pause before it starts to come out that makes it a tad long, but not horribly so. Personally, I think the music is great. And I agree with the love of the mirror shot.

It's hard to be objective. Good friend shooting, good friend starting, good friend composting, my newly re-done bathroom (and even my photography is featured).........But here goes anyways. The uncomfortable moment is waiting for the soap to come out of the bottle. It just takes a bit too long. I agree that you don't know what Jen is "looking at" in the end shot. ("Man, I need to shave my pubes" comes to mind. ;)). I love the pacing of the music, it works perfectly. I think that it could be a bit "prettier" to fit the product.

I love the concept of the reflection shot!!!! Love Jen's expression of disgust and I love the soap dropping.

So, there's my very un-objective $.02.

Looks great!

I love the eye roll and look of disgust/despair right before the soap dropping.

I agree that it takes to long for the product to come out of the bottle, and there is a look on Jen's face that can be misconstrued as boredom while waiting for it to happen. I also think the music might want to be 'softened' up a bit if it's possible.

Also, at the end I'm not really sure what Jen is doing. Can the graphic be moved to still cover but show some washing?

Is the pink bottle at the end stock? Is it possible to replace it with the same type used? It adds a moment of product confusion.

Coolness. I'll fix the squeeze scene. Might have to speed it up a tad, because we only did two takes on that part, and that ended up being the best one, with the bottle more prominent.

As for the mirror/shower scene - since it shows a lack of lather, would it be best if I use the take I have with the mirror slightly steamed up to mask that little fact? That way, the focus will be on the tray/Dove, with CP out of focus in the back. How would that do? I'll add that to the next cut and see what you all think.

As for the red bottle shot, that is one that we must use - it's their new variety that doesn't come out until later this month, so it's not even available on the shelves. They should have offered to send us a bottle or something so the product would match, but that was their odd decision. Ken can tell you that I was in here swearing about having to use it, and finally came up with splitting the screen with an action shot. That clip took me over 6 hours to contemplate what the heck to do with it. Bleh.

And to those who can't view it, I'm sorry. Apparently, all my stuff requires the latest version of Quicktime, probably because I compress it down with the pro version. For this, I didn't want to YouTube it.

I'm also tweaking the transitions a bit, per Kevy's suggestion. It's a real bitch adding dissolves when I have layers of different formats. :P (The required stock footage is imported .mov files which don't take kindly to transitions.) But, I figured it's worth a try.

Oh, and I'll try a bit of Paris-y music with the second take, although I am partial to MBC's ditty. :)

I really really liked the mirror reflection scene at the end. I thought it looked very cool. Sensual without being over the top.

You are incredible. I can't believe you pulled this together so quickly. Some constructive criticism before I put on my "I work in marketing hat":

Cut the scene of Jennie smiling at the product a bit. It was a bit awkward. Shorter length would help. I would cut from the beginning as opposed to the end.
I'm sure this comes later, but the shower scenes would benefit from sort of treatment that would match them to the more produced look and feel of the title card and dove supplied scenes. Needs a bit of "haziness" if you know what I mean.Ok marketing stuff:

Hero shot is lost a bit to the seductive showering of Jen's face. The marketing folks may not like that. However, there is a great hero shot at the end, but again the product can be lost with everything else going on.
Is there any more product info you can include? The title cards look great but the oil/cream scene seems like it would benefit from a product info overly or a card following it. I don't know anything about the stuff but something like: 100% organic wizzywhats, or natural oil creams... if you get what I mean.Honestly though, incredible first stab.

I agree with GD that the mirror is too foggy, but the effect is great. Just needs to be toned down a touch. (of course that is prolly cause we both like looking at naked chix in mirrors)

I can't say I like the new music as much, but I think it does fit the scene better. I think it needs to be taken down a couple notches and brought in a bit more slowly - elegantly. It's a bit sudden.

Looking good!

"drop the ordinary and indulge." (Take 2)

Which do you think sounds better?

Have you thought about doing a VO?Yep. I might try it on one of the next takes.

The only thing I don't like about spoken word though - it can sometimes distract from the imagery, rather than add to it. My idea is to captivate people in the scene, so they can visualize themselves. But, I'm still open to trying a VO. It's at the bottom of my list though. :)

I really like the 2nd cut! It's fantastic!

I didn't notice the verbiage change until you pointed it out, but I do like "drop" after the soap drop. The cut to the oil/lotion mixture was a bit sudden and if there is a way you can move the focus off of Jen smiling at the product I'd suggest that as well.

As a woman (and that is who I presume the target market is ;) ) I like the last scene. The mirror is a bit foggy but you can still see motion. However, it's not suggesting that we hop in the shower and have sex with Jen. It's suggesting that we use this product and relax. Then again, looking at chix in the mirror while they shower isn't one of my fantasies.

I also prefer this cut of music. It's very relaxing.

It's fantastic. I'll take a look at the others when I get home.

There are elements I like in both takes.

My personal preference, overall, is Take 1. That said, I think Take 2 is the better result for mass appeal.

I like the music in Take 1 better, but think the music in Take 2 is more appropriate.

The fogged mirror is much better, because as CP mentioned herself, I was kinda wondering what exactly she was washing in Take 1.

*Drop* is a much better word choice.

Kevy Baby

I will start by saying T that this, overall, looks fantastic. We have all been focusing on improvements but I wanted to let you know that this looks so freakin' good in such a short period of time is amazing!

OK, some of the edits still seam abrupt to me. In particular: both sides of the soap drop, into the soap squeeze, and into the split screen. When trying to convey "soft", you need soft transitions as well. There may be too many scenes/transitions as well, but maybe if these transitions were softened it might help.

And, I disagree about the fogged mirror - I like it. It provides a little motion to an otherwise static screen. You are selling the product, not Jen. I think the fog is just about right. I don't know if there is a VO on the closing shot (I can't listen at work: only watch), but it looks ripe for one.

NirvanaMan

True though, depending on how they are judging these, one thing to consider is the fact that most people ignore commercials. Many look away. The VO is a way to get the message across even if the viewer isn't looking at the ad. That said, something disruptive can be just as powerful. Sometimes a complete absence of sound can get the consumers attention just as if not more powerfully than any VO or tune.

OK, some of the edits still seam abrupt to me. In particular: both sides of the soap drop, into the soap squeeze, and into the split screen. When trying to convey "soft", you need soft transitions as well. I'm trying to keep the beginning a bit more rough and abrupt, like the soap, and then soften things up once the Dove comes in. Hence why the beginning is also sans music. Would that make sense or no? I'm not sure how to convey it differently. Hmmm.

ETA - looks like I'm in the minority on the fog thing but here's my opinion -

OMG - Take 3 ROCKS! Sooo much better. The only quibble I have now is since you cropped the beginning of the squeezing (awesome) you now have too long an ending on the shot. You can see the cream suck back into the bottle when I stopped squeezing, which I think looks bad.

Other than that, I'd add at least one line of voice over somewhere (I'd trust marketing people with decisions like that, but I think it does need some vocal in it), but that's it. The end shot is perfect, IMO. I dig what you're doing with the beginning being abrupt like the bar of soap.

I think I have to agree now, but that could be cause I am getting too close to it. A little less fogging would be ideal, but given the choices of shots up there I think 2 is the way to go for that shot. Plus there wasn't noticeable camera shake.

If you guys don't mind I can show it to a few marketing peoples in my office tomorrow for a fresh perspective.
Go for it! My plans are to finalize it tomorrow and upload it in the evening.

I have fixed the bottle suckage, and switched back to the second steamy shower.

I'm also toying with their stock music right now. It's SO overplayed from all the entries, but it is theirs....

(Thanks to everyone for all your insight and patience. I feel so, "Mom!! Look at me, Mom!! Look at this! Look at this!", which I know can be quite annoying. ;) )

One little thing I like about Take 3 that is different from the first two.

At the end, with the text:

Enjoy a little luxury, everyday

<<Dove bottle>>

dovecreamoil.com

Your titles are exactly aligned and over the "Dove" label on the body wash bottle. I'm reading the text of the first line and it blends to the bottle and immediately, with no eye movement at all I'm reading the brand name, and then without eye movement I am reading the action prompt (dovecreamoil.com).

In the other takes they are close but not really aligned.

thank you for posting the non-quick-time links. I seem to be having some issues here.

I like all three. :) I like the piano, french sounding music. I like the fogged mirror but you can still see Jen. I didn't find the motion distracting. I would prefer the bottle colors to match, though I realize you can't help that. I love the disgusted look at the soap drop! I like the shower squeak, too. Absolutely keep that. :)

I can't hear the music or any words spoken but...

I agree with the Take 2 mirror being too foggy.

I think that perhaps the user {hey CP!! Great job!} shouldn't smile at the bottle at all. Either a look of 'I wonder how this works?' or 'why did I even bother with the bar soap???'

NMs {I hope I have that right} suggested describing the product a bit; that would be good {like i said, I haven't listened to it, perhaps you are?} and maybe, which I read, your comments about how you felt using it, somehow thrown in? Those adjectives. How you felt silky? That makes ME want to try it!!!

Just some comments, 'cuz you asked. Otherwise, I love it.

I feel for you and your voice. I was saying those words and my sinus problems make me sound probably like you. :(

I wish you the best in this contest!! You are awesome!!

Alex, that was completely unintentional, so thanks for pointing that out!

I'm going to try and send that shot to Motion for some stablization and see if I can't take that stupid jolt out of there, because I think that's the shot to go with, simply because it lines up perfectly.

Ponine, if you have a microphone for your computer, I think Window's Media Player has a record feature.

As for music, I'm still checking out pieces. I think the European one sounds WAY too Italian. So, I very well might go with one of their stock clips. Although, I am getting a lot of positive feedback about MBC's clip in other places besides LoT. :)

(Click here (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2345392715589638233&hl=en) for the alternate Google upload.)

As much as I like CP's voiceover in 5+, It's a bit jarring to suddenly have a voice. Had there been a VO at the opening too, say, before the shower sound kicks in, or while Jen is rolling her eyes and before the soap drop, then it might have worked better for me, but with the rest of the ad being so quiet, I think it's better w/out the VO.

Bwahahah! :) This is all too crazy for me.

If you would like to me to record "tired of the same old shower?" I can try that as well. Though my worry then is inconsistency if I don't say the middle part, and overdoing it if I do say all the lines, like I'm reading a powerpoint presentation out loud.

I can't even say which version I like better. I can see the pros and cons for both.

Disneyphile
01-05-2008, 05:44 PM
I don't want a VO at the beginning, because I don't want to take away from the shower knob squeak. I think that draws enough attention.

The end VO works, because CP said it so relaxed that it fits. But, then again, the commercial speaks for itself without needing a voice.

I'd also love to see what our marketing guru thinks, since a VO was his idea. ;)

But, yeah, I couldn't have gotten a better actress than CP. :snap: There are only so many things one can "fix in post", and bad acting is not one of them. Thankfully, I didn't have to worry about that one bit. :D

wendybeth
01-05-2008, 07:48 PM
Are Jenn and Greg going to be in the sequel?

Lol- I thought of that as well, but in a humorous way: The shower curtain is drawn and all that can be seen is a person's silhouette as they drizzle the soap onto a loofah sponge. As the person soaps up, a male voice says something like "Wow- this is great!" (in an Herbal Essence sort of way, borderline orgasmic). Then Jenn pokes her head in the shower, and your see a totally soaped up Greg looking startled and then guilty as she glares at him for using her stuff.

Let's not even go into the KB version.

Hmm, after doing some judging, I got curious about the judging rules.

Judging Requirements:
The judging criteria for the First Round of judging to determine the five (5) Finalists are as follows:

Originality and Creativity - 30%
Adherence to Creative Assignment - 40%
Overall Appeal - 30%

The judging criteria for the Second Round of judging to determine the two (2) Grand Prize winners are as follows:

Originality and Creativity - 30%
Adherence to Creative Assignment - 40%
Overall Appeal - 20%
Popular Consumer Online Vote - 10%

Consumers will be able to vote on each of the five (5) Submissions by logging on to www.dovecreamoil.com and following the posted instructions. Votes will be limited to one per day per person and/or e-mail address during the duration of the Contest Entry Period.
So all the voting now doesn't matter. They do not consult the online voting to decide the 5 finalists. It's only if it gets to the finals that our votes count, and even then, it's only 10% of the score.

Even so, I'm going to vote down and up just to help keep DP's on the "highest rated" page. :)

Does anyone know why SO MANY of these use the same crappy font? Is it some sort of default for a particular piece of video editing software?

And I can't f'n believe that I've seen multiple question marks, the word "luxury" misspelled, and even a text smiley in these entries. Shockingly bad.

I'm happy the final winner is only 10% determined by votes, because VotefortheWorst.com and other idiots like to ruin contests like these.

As for the fonts, there are three fonts in their site's "editing tool" for people who don't have an editing program. They're not bad fonts, but sadly, most people don't know how to format them and make them look decent. Even I used Arial, which is one of those three that everyone else can use. ;)

I boggled at the misspelling and the text smiley.

I missed this thread until now. I thought it was a Chocolate contest

I wasn't sure what it was but I clicked to view it and as I was watching it I kept thinking "dang, that actress looks like Jen!". Then I found it was Jen! I thought I was watching a proffessional commercial, you guys did a great job!

I don't know if my Quicktime needs to updated also, but I found that if I click on the Play/Pause button a few times rapidly it then plays. Just in case that helps anyone who can't get it to play.

Good luck to all involved! :snap:

Although, it looks like they're getting hammered with entries now, since this is the last weekend to upload.

And, I'm quite pleased with some of the newer entries - they're very good! I'd hate to be one of the few without annoying text smilies. ;)

I need to go back and find the title of your entry...

Okay.....it may just be me not understanding how to vote but I realized after the fact that you click on the number of stars you want. It, to me, is a bit misleading. It asks you to vote but it doesn't say click on your rating. Unless it says it somewhere else? I didn't catch it.

So, I think, you are supposed to click on the star that equals the number of stars you want it to have.

It let me vote again so that was good.

Awesome!! Yes, I agree, yours is the best!!

Before anyone kills themselves with figuring out how to vote multiple times each day, Don't forget CP's ersearch:
So all the voting now doesn't matter. They do not consult the online voting to decide the 5 finalists. It's only if it gets to the finals that our votes count, and even then, it's only 10% of the score.BUT...
Even so, I'm going to vote down and up just to help keep DP's on the "highest rated" page. :)

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that as time goes on, the ones with actual effort put into them would start showing up. Even if it does mean there's more competition, it feels better to stand out in a crowd of quality than to simply be better than crap. And yours still stands out, T.

Putting aside my bias, I was particularly impressed by the "Dove Works For You" one (currently listed as 8th).

ETA: Gah, I can't believe there are still "cut together the provided stock footage and use the stock music" entries in the top 10! WTF people?!

They don't appear to update in real time as I have noticed the vote tally on DP's submission not changing at all, even when I navigate away from her submission and then come back to it. Same for other submissions - not that I am giving them one star votes or anything.

ETA: Gah, I can't believe there are still "cut together the provided stock footage and use the stock music" entries in the top 10! WTF people?!I think that's why Dove is mostly determining the winner, because you have idiots like "Vote for the Worst" and other jerks who like to throw competitions just to be jerks. (Makes me want to bring along a group of people and go file complaints about those idiots at their jobs.)

I find it amusing that the one titled "Love Letter" focuses on the word "caress" which is Dove's competition.Good eye!

I made sure to concentrate on luxury, because that's what Dove asked for - luxury. While a few of them are very good (like the hands one), they don't even touch on the luxury theme. I'm thinking that's where I might have an advantage.

The 'hands' one~

While I really do like it, I don't think it is appropriate. This is more of a body wash, right? I wouldn't be surprised if it were taken and used for a hand cream.

Can these things be copywrited? {is that the correct spelling, it looks funny....}

It is copyrighted by its very creation. However, I'm sure the contest rules grant Dove unlimited perpetual (and probably exclusive) license.

How does her ad still only have 3 stars, it blows my mind. If we're all voting early and often and giving her 5, then someone is going in and giving low rankings, probably for competitive reasons. Grr... we should make it our goal to pull her up to 4 stars.

These votes are often weighted in odd ways, specifically to counteract ballot stuffing.

Cadaverous Pallor

Bear in mind that all the other contestants are doing the same thing - voting theirs up and the others down. I'm sure there are larger support groups for certain other entries. Still, I'm doing my part :)

BarTopDancer
01-09-2008, 10:31 AM
I think it's also weighted in proportion to views. When it had fewer views it had a higher ranking (#5). Now that it has 400something views it's on page 3. The number one (as of the posting of this) had 42 views.

LSPoorEeyorick

Just have to say again, the VO is great. CP, I love the way it sounds like you almost whispered. The words seem held back, almost swallowed or bitten off. Nothing about the whole thing is overt, which is why adding the fog to hide the nakey really worked.
