Inspired by the candle thread and my perusal through Yesterland I found myself missing certain shops (I guess restaurants count too, but shopping is the key).
With a heavy thank you to Yesterland (http://www.yesterland.com/yester.html) here are my favorite lost shops:
Candle Shop (http://www.yesterland.com/candleshop.html)
Flower Shop (http://www.yesterland.com/flowermart.html) - I just think it reall brightened up main street and made it seem like an old-town street.
The Character Shop (http://www.yesterland.com/charshop.html) I still call that space by that name.
Indian Trading Post (http://www.yesterland.com/tradingpost.html) Mostly a "boys" shop, but I was a Hot Wheels girl.
And, one I'd love even more now - the One of a Kind Shop (http://www.yesterland.com/oneofakind.html)
The Candy Shop in the Castle. Ummmmm, Rock Candy.
And, not a store, but I LOVED those futuristic "speaker phones" at the exit of the Circle Vision Theater.
What was your shopping love that no longer exists at Disneyland?

The Character Shop (http://www.yesterland.com/charshop.html) I still call that space by that name. This was in Tomorrowland? Interesting. I always thought that the stores were very specifically land-themed (like the other ones you listed).
It is rather sad that all these very special stores are gone. I can't remember any of them. :(
My only memory of shopping at DL as a kid was when my grandmother bought me an Alice in Wonderland Choose Your Own Adventure storybook. I remember there being lots of book choices. I always thought that it had been purchased at the Emporium, but now that I know the stores more intimately I know it was the shop behind New Century Timepieces.
BTW, that location just stopped selling books as of this month when they reopened Crystal Arcade and its outlying stores. I don't think there's anywhere else on Main Street to buy books. :(

Oh the Character Shop most definatley.
And I loved the phones... I had all but forgotten about them.
Though I think what I really miss more, is the adult theme merchandise that used to be around in the 80's and 90's
How sad that it seems disneyland shops went from a top of the line selection to second rate merchandise you can find at any disney store.

Unique. That's what the stores were. Now, it's mostly the same old stuff - with a few exceptions.

At the time, the shops bored me. My mom, however; would spend ours in New Orleans Square. If those shops were still there today, I can easily see myself following in her footsteps. All that cool stuff - now we get pins.

I don't remember details but I remember the land specific and unique items. I do remember the Emporium having divided sections. I liked those.
I'm holding out hope that with the new execs the "strip mall" atmosphere and every store carrying the same item will be replaced with more land specific and unique items again.
THe Tabacco shop was a favorite of my Mom's to pick up French and Turkish cigarettes.
I have an unused Disneyland Gigar band :D

I miss all those especially the speaker phones.
When my mom used to take me in the late 60's & 70's, Main Street was like another mall. So many different shops and specialized items. She'd spend hours on Main Street with me in a stroller!!
Now all those stores are just various styles of Disney Stores. The park still has stuff that's unique to it but not like before.

Heh, those pre internet days:
phone calls from Disneyland - "Hey we're calling you from a Speaker Phone - how cool is that?"
or - "wow you can call the waether number for any areacode and find out what the weather is like"
How impressed we were of the futre that has now become so mundane.

I remember the candle shop too, I used to love to go in there with me mom.
HOw :(
I miss the speaker phone booths, too. And I miss the old style Emporium, too. Sadness.

among some of the merchandise locations i worked were Tobacco and the Men's Counter in the Emporium.
i enjoyed the Glass Blowers on Main Street creating unique keepsakes and collectibles right before your eyes!
do you recall the perfume shop in NOS? you could buy name brands OR for a nominal cost, have a custom blend made and registered just for you!
how 'bout Pendleton Wool in Frontierland and next door the leather shop with western hats, belts and wallets (now a pin shop).
and remember when...
the Penny Arcade was filled with antique arcade games and not CANDY?

I have a special place in my memories for two shops of yore:
- The Hat shop in New Orleans Square. Back when I was in my teens :cough:, that place was filled with all sorts of beautiful and eclectic women's hats. Hats with ostrich plumes and lots of ribbons. Back then, I always said to myself that when I had a job and some money, I'd get one of those extravagant hats. But that never happened. :sniff:
- The mineral shop at the exit of the Mine Train. They had all sorts of gemological stuff in there like polished rocks, quartz crystals and the like. Although I never really wanted to buy anything there, I loved poking around and looking at all the mining equipment.
What wonderful memories.... :)

I have a memory of a pre-teen me convincing my parents to buy a full-head (smelly) rubber Frankenstein mask at the magic store.
Those were the days.

I'm glad the big smelly rubber snakes and spiders are still being sold near the exit of Jungle Cruise. Saw them recently after the store redo. I look forward to frightening my children with them, if they're still there then.

Did I miss a big announcement?
