I'm going to have a hard time saying no to any of the 3 days.
Worse (or better depending on perspective) than last year. I think I've only heard of three of those bands and Gogol Bordello only because I believe they've been mentioned here before (Fatboy Slim and Dwight Yoakum being the other two and I've only heard of Yoakum because of his movie performances, most prominently Panic Room).
CoasterMatt
01-22-2008, 12:15 AM
So you've never heard of Roger Waters? What sad part of the universe have I staggered into here?
No and mine. I don't listen to music. No interest in the stuff, the fact that music causes such emotional responses in other people is one of life's great mysteries to me and the biggest sign that I'm either an alien or brain damaged (Oliver Sachs would tend towards putting me in the latter).
So when I've heard of a band, generally it is a sign that they've either hit upon major success or made some random crossover into parts of the universe that I actually care about.
That said, I'm sure there is music by a great many of them that if I heard I would know I had heard before, I just wouldn't have a clue who was making the music, just as I don't know the name of the author of most books I read.

Roger Waters, as a member of Pink Floyd, created "Dark Side of the Moon" - It went on to be a certified 15x Platinum album, that was on the Billboard charts for 741 weeks, only to be removed by a rule change.
Not a major success at all.
CoasterMatt
01-22-2008, 12:44 AM
I'd love to see Kraftwerk, probably only because I've been listening to a lot of old Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force records lately (Planet Rock is just a big rap throwdown on top of a mix of the melody from Kraftwerk's TransEurope Express, and the drum pattern is based on Kraftwerk's Numbers).

Ok. I've heard of Pink Floyd. But I couldn't name a member of the band. Same with Def Leppard or AC/DC or Heart or Red Hot Chili Peppers or the not-Gwen Stefani members of No Doubt, and most other bands I've heard of. And I don't meant to suggest that unless I've heard of them a band or person hasn't had great success, that isn't true at all. There are thousands of incredibly successful musical artists I've never heard of.
If you want to have success and for me to know your name, you better put it in the band's name to have much of a chance.
And if you played me tracks of Dark Side of the Moon*, I'm sure I'd recognize the music but wouldn't be able to tell you who was playing it. Is that song with the children singing part of that album?
*On a middle school field trip we saw the Pink Floyd light show thing at OMSI in Portland, Oregon (the old one by the zoo) but I snuck out about 10 minutes into it so I could go see the interesting stuff.

Is that song with the children singing part of that album?Nope. You're thinking of The Wall, which is another monster hit album for them. You may have heard of the movie...
Morrigoon - don't feel too bad. The vast majority of the acts are lesser known, and on purpose. The few top bands bring you in but it's the surprise new acts that make Coachella a true experience. :)

I offer no opinion on the quality of the line-up. Just on the quantity with which I am familiar. The "better/worse" comment was in regards to whether others would prefer a lineup full of bands and musicians so broadly known that even I had heard of them or full of performers that have had their success without quite reaching that threshold.
The only reason I mentioned it is because we had talked about it and that question last year when there were a few more bands in the former category.
And I don't dislike music. I am just indifferent to it and find the societal fascination with it to be perplexing.

So I've been wracking my brain for a couple of days trying to decide the best way to sneak my "professional camera" (they define "professional camera" as "any camera with a removable lens" ) into the show. My best plan so far...ask for press credentials!
Reading through some stuff on the internet, I have 2 chances of getting them. Slim and none. But sure as hell can't hurt to ask.

You could sneak it in under a large toupee.

It might hurt to to get it depending on how (or if) they control credentialed press. For example, there have been Disney press events where the cost of me being there as press is that I don't get to move outside of a very small area and then only with company and a reason.

If that turns out to be the case, then I'll just dump the camera and the pass and forget it (I'm not relying on the pass as entrance, just permission to bring my camera). But considering the nature of the event, I don't imagine it will be like that, exactly.

Actually, once Ticketmaster is done with its raping, the price is the same as the Fingerprints price ($285). And if you want to print your own tickets instead of having them mailed, it'll be a couple bucks more.
But it's still $20 off full price + TicketRaper and you don't have to be in Long Beach or Pomona.

John Butler Trio
Cut Copy
Rogue Wave
SATURDAY, APRIL 26:
Portishead
Kraftwerk
Death Cab for Cutie (like them, but this show will probably be very full)
Rilo Kiley
Dwight Yoakam
M.I.A.
Cold War Kids
Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks
Flogging Molly
Mark Ronson
SUNDAY, APRIL 27:
Roger Waters (“Dark Side of the Moon”)

Murs
Dmitri from Paris

How does bacon fit in? Can you have bacon during passover?
(and why is there not a bacon smiley?)
Ghoulish Delight
04-11-2008, 03:36 PM
Overlooking the minor technicality of it not being kosher at all in the first place, bacon does not violate any of the Passover-specific rules.
Of course, if the weather is in its usual state, we could faithfully recreate the origins of matzah by carrying some dough that hasn't had time to rise on our backs in the baking desert sun.
Ponine
04-11-2008, 04:32 PM
Mind you, when it dawned on me, I rushed over to ask my passover observing co-worker about bacon. Lukily she was on the phone.
I thought to myself on the way back to my desk, you know, I better just ask GD. Thats a much better solution.
And then the minor technicallity requires no explaining.
And if you desire, I will have dough for you to carry to coachella with you. Why you would WISH to, I have no idea, but we could!!

It actually was one of the coolest Coachellas I've ever been to. I don't think we ever got over 100 and tonight was downright cold (or maybe it was the fact that I kept getting drenched in sweat).
Rodger Water was incredible. I wasn't excited about seeing him and man am I glad I stayed. Amazing things happen when pigs fly. I'm sure there will be photos and videos following soon because it HAS to be seen.
We are now all home. Cocktails have been made and sleep will be coming soon. I sure hope we all can walk tomorrow.

Coachella: Pig Flies, and There's a $10,000 Reward
INDIO, California -- Concert promoters are offering a $10,000 reward and four lifetime passes to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for the safe return of a giant inflatable pig that's gone missing.
The spray-painted pig balloon was released during Roger Waters' performance Sunday at the festival. The school-bus-size prop emerged during "Pigs," a song from Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals. One of many stories on the topic (http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/04/coachella-pig-f.html).

my first Coachella. I have to admit I had not even the remotest clue what to expect going in. as luck and immense generosity would have it, I had a chance to try something truly different and attend fridays opening day. Id seen the list for who would be playing on friday, the only day I went and I in all honesty, had never heard of 99% of them.
it was the largest, most incredible, most over the top circus of music, visual and auditory experiences that I never could have imagined in my wildest dreams.
between the 3 story works of art, architechture, amazing electronic wizardry, the continual audio onslaught of live performances, crowds cheering, singing and dancing, the amazing positive energy presented there was well beyond anything Ive experienced in my life.
thank you to everyone who made this an experience to remember and then some. more than half the time I had no idea who I was listening to...didnt really seem to matter. as I was advised before arriving, follow my ears and sure enough, they never let me down.
the merciful weather and unbelieveable food were also a huge plus. I was preparing for much much worse

I didn't think that they would intentionally release the pig:
They released on purpose. It happened exactly when the song ended, and Roger Waters looked at it flying away and said, "That's my pig." Also, and € can confirm this, I believe they did the same thing recently at a festival in England somewhere. This was no accident and the quotes from the linked article, such as "It's a very emotional time for us," are the promoters just having some fun with it.

They've released a giant pig before, the first was unintentional in 1976
According to Wikipedia-
- The original Pink Floyd pig was designed by Roger Waters and built in December 1976 in preparation for shooting the cover of the Animals album. Plans were made to fly the forty-foot, helium-filled balloon over Battersea Power Station on the first day's photo-shoot, with a marksman prepared to shoot the pig down if it broke free. However, the pig was not launched.
On the second day, the marksman wasn't present because no one had told him to return, and the pig broke free due to a strong gust of wind (gaining a lot of press coverage). It disappeared from sight within five minutes, and was spotted by airline pilots at forty thousand feet in the air. Flights at Heathrow Airport were cancelled as the huge inflatable pig flew through the path of aircraft, eastwards from Britain, over the English Channel, finally landing on a rural farm in Kent that night.
The pig was recovered and repaired for the resumption of photography for the album cover, but unfortunately the sky was cloudless and blue, thus "boring". However, the pictures of the sky from the first day were suitable; eventually, the album cover was created using a composite of photos from the first and third days.

Just saw a news report and it may be that the promoters aren't "just having fun with it" but are covering their butts. But there is still no doubt in my mind that the pig was released on purpose.

No, that pig was meant to be released. Covering their butts with 4 lifetime passes to Coachella is a LOT cheaper than FAA fines, I'm sure. And, first, the pig must be found.

Yes, the chances of that happening are small, but I still think it is a stupid stunt.

While I applaud it. As the flying pig says "Fear builds walls"
This country has become far too risk adverse for my taste at the moment. The more the government (at all levels) is used to moderate behavior in the name of safety the more suckie things become. I'll take the risk of the occasional flying pig. Stuff the FAA.

Okay, so enough about the pig. It was definitely the most theatrically amazing moment, but it was a weekend full of amazing moments.
Most Anticipated Act that lived up to/surpassed expectations:
Man Man. I fell in love with their music a few weeks ago, bought their newest album. It's hard to categorize the music. A bit of Tom Waits on speed, a bit of the Baltic sound, a bit of the Zutons. High energy, great lyrics. Then there's their stage performance. Wow. Nonstop madness, props flying, lead singers flying, noise and music and theatrics and jumping and near-injury. Pure awesome.
Most anticipated act that failed to deliver
M.I.A. We made the mistake of leaving Kraftwerk early to check out M.I.A. She seemed like she'd put on a hell of a show. Unfortunately, it just wasn't to be. She was playing in the largest tent. By the time we got there it was overflowing with people out the sides and back. We started to work our way through the crowd to get as close as we could, and immediately we were passing people going the other way coming out of the tent grumbling about how horrible it was inside. There was just no way we were getting in there, and it didn't sound like we would have wanted to be in there anyway. We later learned that she started to encourage people to come on stage, which led to a bit of chaos, bitching about security, and a long pause in her act. In the end, she did all of six songs. Total disappointment and we should have stuck around for the Kraftwerk robots.
Best "not holding my breath" act that beat my expectations
Portishead. Actually, this is a close one with Roger Waters, but that was so over the top that I can't even consider it together with the rest of the weekend. So that leaves Portishead. Simply amazing. After essentially an 11 year hiatus, they got onto that stage and absolutely nailed the old stuff like they had just walked of the studio, and their new stuff keeps the essence of the band while progressing their sound into the new decade. She felt every word she sang, and the audience felt it with her. Stunning performance.
Best walk-by that convinced us to stop and check an act we didn't know out
Holy F*ck. We were headed elsewhere, but the music coming from the tent stopped us in our tracks, and we stayed for the remainder of the set. Another high energy act with a frantic feel, aided by the constant plugging and replugging of various electronic devices througout, even in the middle of songs. Later research revealed that unlike most electronic acts, they use no pre-looped recorded samples, they do everything live. Including running, by hand, 35mm film through a machine to play the sound track at high speed. An entirely unique sound that had to be danced to.
Best Tina Turner impression
Sharon Jones and the Dapp Kings. I'm tired just thinking about her performance. This is a throwback act in the best sense of the word. She got up there and brought the house down. A frenetic bundle of dancing and wailing. Sensational, I'm thoroughly jealous of NA and € who get to see here again at the Hollywood Bowl.
Most danceable
Gogol Bordello. This comes as no surprise to many here on LoT, but it's the first chance we've had to see them, and they lived up to their reputation. They went up at the most brutal time of day, with the sun low and in our faces and the humidity skyrocketing. But nothing could stop me from 50 minutes of near nonstop jumping and dancing. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
Most disappointing thing of the weekend
Tesla Coils. Unless we somehow missed it, which is highly unlikely, the giant Tesla Coils never did their thing. On day one, we knew it was a bad sign when we saw a bunch of people hovering around the thing with a multimeter and eventually a soldering iron. I guess they never got the part they needed from Lithuania because we never saw it fired up. Coachella felt a little empty without it.

This just in - Pig Found!
Pig found in La Quinta country club |
|
Lorraine Whetstone and Marcel Honore • April 29, 2008 |
|
The inflatable, school bus-sized inflatable pig that floated away |
during Roger Waters' closing performance this weekend has been found in |
two parts in a La Quinta country club, according to Coachella |
organizers. |
|
"That's definitely our pig," said Bill Fold, a Coachella producer. |
|
Susan Stolz called The Desert Sun this morning saying she and her |
husband found a glob of vinyl in their driveway yesterday at the |
Hideaway Golf Club in La Quinta. Not sure what it was, they threw it |
away. This morning, they read about the missing pig in the newspaper |
and e-mailed the following to Coachella organizers. |
|
"It is entirely possible that I have at least part of your pig. My |
husband and I live at the Hideaway. We found a large pile of plastic |
yesterday morning on our driveway. It has some blue, yellow and silver |
paint. I must warn you that it is not in good shape. Maybe the balloon |
exploded or something. However, if you'd like to check it out, just let |
me know. " |
|
"We went and got the pig out of the trash and put him in the garage," |
Stolz said. "We have laughed our heads off." |
|
Another tangled, painted mess of what's left of the pig has been found |
about a half a block away. That neighbor is not home, yet. |
|
Coachella Fest organizers are offering a $10,000 reward and four |
Coachella tickets for life for the return of the inflatable pig. |
|
Stolz said she and her husband, Steve, would split the reward with |
their neighbor and would happily accept Coachella tickets. |
|
The pig, which was held above the crowd at the Coachella Music and Arts |
Festival on Sunday from lines held on the ground, displayed the words |
``Don't be led to the slaughter'' and a cartoon of Uncle Sam with two |
bloody cleavers. |
|
The underside of the pig read ``Obama'' with a checked ballot box |
alongside, referring to Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack |
Obama, D- |
Ill.

Oh, sheesh, it was a joke. I'm the youngest 47-year-old on the planet. I'm really sorry I didn't go, because I was never so much on the fence when tickets went on sale as I was this year.
It wasn't the ticket price that dissuaded me, but the added expense of lodging in the vicinity.
And I'm not jealous of anyone either, but rather envious. I'm glad my friends had such a good time at something I would have enjoyed ... because that's the next best thing in my book to me enjoying it myself.
Eh, chock it up to Decision No. 3,456,812 that could have been better.
Oi, I missed Coachella and it was great. I love my set of problems!!!!

The only bad part about being old is that I had to take a long nap today to recover. It was delicious.

I'm going to Burning Man with a busload of people, most of whom are older than me - At least two of the attendees in our group are in their 70s.

Roger Waters is more than a decade older than you.
Yes but Roger Waters has enough cash flow to do about anything he wants to stay young.

Slight derail: one of my favorite artists is Dave Archer (http://www.davearcher.com/). He basically creates his "canvases" by spreading isopropyl alcohol on a sheet of glass then hitting it with a Tesla Coil. The IP alcohol/Tesla Coil combination creates beautiful rainbow effects. He then paints the glass on the back, starting with the details first then filling in the background behind it. I am fortunate enough to own an original, albeit a very small one (I understand that he has stopped creating art because the electricity was wreaking havoc on his body).

Ive seen those at Comic Con I think. there were some really good sized versions on display. theyre incredible...and to say the least, not what I could call 'inexpensive'
nice investment in some really cool art.

nice investment in some really cool art.I think I paid about $800 for an original that is about 5" x 7". I wonder what it is worth today.
Back then (early 90's), the larger pieces were going for $25,000-$30,000. Just a touch out of my range.

One thing I've really learned from Coachella is that the 80's are back and it's time for me to stop freaking out about it. I mean, fanny packs are BACK. They were everywhere. Freakin' fanny packs. Time to get over it...

Videos of them at Coachella didn't come out well due to the blinding sunlight behind them.
