View Full Version : See a film I edited

Tre, a film I edited a couple of years ago, will be playing at a couple of theaters in the LA area for the next week (I don't know if it will go longer than that - that seems to be what it's booked for at the moment). I know it isn't always easy to get out at night during the week, but if anyone thinks they might like to see it, I and the other people who worked on the film would surely appreciate the support. LSPE and I will probably go on Wednesday or Thursday, if you'd like to join us.

It is showing at the Sunset Five and the One Colorado in Pasadena. Showtimes are available here (http://www.movietickets.com/movie_detail.asp?movie_id=58277).

Also, here is the LA Weekly review:
GO TRE Unlike most indie dramas about rudderless 20-somethings who exorcise their hang-ups by talking and screwing each other to death, Tre is something rare: a perceptive, nonindulgent chamber piece that wrings a little art from that anxious age. Needing a break from life in the city, professional slacker Tre (Daniel Cariaga) crashes at the home of best buddy Gabe (Erik McDowell) and Gabe's girlfriend Kakela (co-writer Kimberly-Rose Wolter), only to discover the guest room is already occupied by Nina (Alix Koromzay), an aspiring actress newly separated from her husband. Soon, Tre begins a passionless affair with Nina, while Gabe and Kakela ponder marriage, silently observing their houseguests' exploits from a distance. Directed and co-written by Eric Byler (Charlotte Sometimes), Tre suffers from a familiar quarter-life-crisis setup, but the film repeatedly sidesteps the cliché of confessional dramas, eschewing "I feel this way — and therefore so does my whole generation" monologues for the naturalistic patter of sympathetic, half-formed adults whose unstable sex lives belie a deeper, unspoken malaise. All four performers deliver nicely subtle turns, but the best of the group is newcomer Cariaga: In the wrong hands, Tre would be just another enigmatic nonconformist who learns how to open his heart, but Cariaga transforms him into an uncertain man-child juggling the fashionable cynicism that protects him with the genuine feelings that will lead him to maturity or heartbreak. (Sunset 5; One Colorado) (Tim Grierson)

I'm so proud of Tom! I got to screen the film with the director while they were working on it, and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. (And seeing the hubby's name - and work - on the big screen!) Please join us if you can!

Way cool (and it will be competing for my attention at this time with the Oscar Shorts program at the Embarcadero) No fear, I will see it, it is now so marked in my calendar! Since it's playing at the 4 star, I can also get in a stop at Green Apple Books and have a Vietnamese Sandwich before the show, then hop the bus for a few more blocks to the movies. Kewl

Tom,

Matthew and I are sadly unable to make it up there this week, but we both wanted to let you know how proud we are of your accomplishment. A virtual hug and pat on the back, as it were. And, we hope that sometime in the future, we will have another opportunity to see your work. Heartfelt congratulations to you.

What time are you considering going?

LSPoorEeyorick
02-05-2008, 10:47 PM
I think we're open as to what time; it would depend on everyone else - whether they could make it to the earlier one (or could stay awake for the later one, heh!)

innerSpaceman
02-05-2008, 10:50 PM
well, my vote is for the earlier one ... but if folks want to come from afar and can only make the later one, I'll try and be up for that.

It's not a matter of staying awake thru the film for that ... but rather of actually still being awake by the time it comes to leave for the film.

Either way, though.

Thanks, everyone for the support.

LSPE and I are willing to go either, or both, nights in order to accommodate everyone's schedules. So anyone who wants to go on Wednesday, let us know, and anyone who wants to go on Thursday, let us know.

We are up also for either earlier or later show. Again, depending on folks' schedules. So if you want go, contact us.

And thanks again.

I want to go! The Thursday earlier show is my preference. But I can make the late show (i'll just be tardy for school the next day ... but, feh, it's Friday!)

LSPoorEeyorick
02-06-2008, 08:26 AM
I think our firm moviegoers for Thursday are mp and iSm, and we're all local so I would think we could all make it to the early show. GD would only be able to make it today, so if he did want to come, tonight's showtime would hinge on when people were able to arrive, and I imagine 7 would be a stretch. So - and please, people, correct me if I'm wrong or I don't accomodate you - we're probably looking at a (tentative) 10pm Wednesday, and a (firmer) 7pm Thursday.

(ETA: btw, that tentative Wednesday is only if there ARE any Wednesday viewers! Thursday's a for-sure.)

It was great! I'm so glad we made the trip. :D Very nice of the TodiMooers to make it out just to see it with us. I did feel all special sitting with a person who'd worked on the film.

I have to say - it was edited beautifully. Studio quality on that front. After a while you forget to think about the editing - which is a good thing!

The rest of the production values were also very good, making for an enjoyable film. (I've seen bad movies for the benefit of friends - this wasn't a bad movie.)

Seeing Tom's name ON THE POSTER and AT THE TOP OF THE FILM was awesome. Way to go! :snap:

It was so lovely to have CP and GD to come down to see the movie! I am a little embarrassed to say that when they pointed out Tom's credit on the poster, I emitted a squeal. An actual squeal. In public.

I was impressed with the movie! The last cut I saw was interesting, but Tom's handiwork really added to, and shaped, the film. I'm really proud of you, o-master-of-narrative-structure.

We'll hit the early show, then (Tom's current editing gig starts every morning at 6, so even though he'd be open to seeing a later show, I know it'll be better for him, too.) Thanks, though, Lisa, for all of your support. :)

I sat at home folding laundry until 7pm - raced to the theater and drove around looking for parking. By the time I was ready to buy my ticket, the movie had already started.:(

So... I drove back home. Hung out with Heather for a bit (she hadn't gotten home from work when I initially left), and hustled myself to the last showing in Pasadena.:)

I'm sure that those that saw it will want to talk about it in depth... but for now I'll just say:

CONGRATULATIONS AND JOB WELL DONE, TOM!

I quietly cheered when your name came up on the screen (there was one other person in the theater with me - I wanted to run up to him and say "I know that guy!," but I kept my composure).

Thanks again for letting us know about it.

Heheh, I peppered the credits with polite applause so that our cheering for Tom wouldn't seem quite so singular and friendobvious.

It didn't work.

I have a feeling the other 3 people in the theater caught on that we knew the editor.

Ok, i'll start off the talk about the movie:

Tre is a relentless asshole, and i just don't see the character arc that redeems him in the slightest.

mousepod, you missed the post-show reveal that the story is an autobiographical work of non-fiction. Does that alter your perception of the film in any way?

(We had a private Q&A session after the film. Sorry you missed it. But yeah, the Sunset-5/Former-Virgin locale has the lamest parking in Los Angeles, and thus it is double-doomed. Good luck with that remodel now that Virgin is gone. Uh-huh. Did I mention there were 8 of us in the theater? That's going to be a big night for them.)

Ghoulish Delight
02-08-2008, 08:22 AM
Redeem? Definitely not. Change? Certainly.

He exposed some redeeming qualities, but in the end failed his attempt at redemption.

BarTopDancer

Bummer that I missed it. I'll have to watch it when it hits DVD.

LSPoorEeyorick
02-08-2008, 09:57 AM
Tre is a relentless asshole, and i just don't see the character arc that redeems him in the slightest.

No, indeed. But though Kakela earns sympathy at the beginning of the film, she gradually destroys that through the narrative. (She gradually destroys herself, too.) Tre is "trying not to," while Kakela is "trying to." They're both responsible for their behavior, but in the end, I think I favor Tre more than Kakela. And what of the last scene? Was she lying to him? Well, obviously she was, but which was the lie?

innerSpaceman
02-08-2008, 10:36 AM
I don't even think Kakela is really clear herself on what's her truth and what's her lie.

But neither do I think Tre's shell was cracked open more than a pinch. And I don't think that crack revealed anything but that the asshole exterior concealed a tender heart of total asshole.

At least I found Kakela complex and sort of fun to loathe, whereas I found the title character completely annoying, unsympathetic and dreadful throughout.

I liked the horse, though.

(But it all went downhill from Gabe's nude scene in the first two minutes, heheh ;) )

mousepod
02-08-2008, 11:11 AM
Interesting that it's autobiographical. I imagine that the innocent character who did no wrong except love his woman and stick with his friend is the author (whine, sniffle). Personally, I'm not a fan of infidelity movies (and how much of a telegraph was it to name the guy "Tre"?), so I decided to focus my attention instead on Tom's work, which was excellent.

My biggest gripe had to do with the 'print' that I saw. I'm not sure if it was a result of the video it was shot on or the video it was transferred to, but the blacks weren't black. I'm not sure what the technical term for it is, but the scenes that take place in the dark - the party scene, the final scene - were difficult to watch because the darker parts of the frame glowed gray...

Ghoulish Delight
02-08-2008, 11:21 AM
That's funny, because the print at Sunset was TOO black. It's a film that takes place a lot at night, and I thought that perhaps they could have used a better lighting budget, but Tom assured me that the film he worked with was perfectly well lit.

LSPoorEeyorick
02-08-2008, 11:21 AM
The transfer was bad - you're definitely right - Wednesday's projection of it at the Sunset 5 was worse than Thursday's, at least.

I'm not that much for infidelity movies, either. But no - you've pegged it wrong - Kakela was the screenwriter.

mousepod
02-08-2008, 11:27 AM
Hmmm. Interesting. Still didn't make the story any better for me, but that's probably because I've been tainted by seeing this story told so many times before, in varying degrees of success.

It did make me want to go home and watch "Bad Timing" again, but there's no way I could have sat through it at midnight. Maybe Sunday...

Gemini Cricket
02-08-2008, 11:30 AM
I find it redeeming for the Kakela character that "she" wrote the screenplay. It was like a confession of sorts. Brave to put it out there, I guess. (Although, I guess we don't really know how much of it is true and how much of it was added...)
Kind of her having the final say in what happened and not really making herself some sort of heroine or sympathetic character.
Just a thought.

On another note, this movie made me want to watch Closer again.
