I also can't attend but I'm sure it won't be any more boring than the Oscar nominated films I've seen this weekend (Elizabeth 2: Electric Boogaloo, La Vie en Rose, the entire slate of animated shorts).

If I were closer I'd definitely be in, I don't think I've ever watched the Oscars (though that's maybe only one year in four that I watch them at all) with people who've seen enough of the movies to actually have an informed opinion.

Naw, I feel you, because I find no interest in famous muscle-y people finding occasion to plow each other over and pat each other on the backside!

I'm not particularly into celebrities, but I am into artists, and I'm REALLY into film. I find the whole awards "game" fascinating.

Yes, to me it's mostly the fun of the film contest. It's a silly contest, but it gets you to think about a bunch of mostly good movies (the nominees are mostly worthy, the winners not really "the best" and, of course, there are tons of other great films that don't get nominated).

The rituals of the show I've come to watch for 45 years thru my lifelong movie-fandom have also taken on some fun of their own. Critiquing the acceptance speeches, the women's gowns, and the host's banter is snarky good times.

It's all become great fun, and i love making an event of watching it with friends. Thanks LSPoorEeyoirk and (in Cherny-speak) LSPoorTom!

I was just looking at the TV schedule and see that ABC has about 4 hours of pre-game coverage. If they want a legitimate comparison to the Super Bowl they're going to have to bump that number up.

Myself, I haven't yet decided if I will watch or just read the results tomorrow. A return to bed sounds very tempting.

She's got awesome hair, and did the best in the awkward red carpet interview round. "I'm not used to standing in flower planters in heels."

I adore Tilda Swinton. She always expresses her own style and is always wearing fashion forward designers. She really stood out tonight as being different which is a good thing with all of the retro glamor that was being exhibited. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE retro glamor and would love to be seen in most of the dresses worn tonight. I just think it is it amazing when someone can express their own style and be unique among so many beautiful people.

The same can be applied to Diablo Cody. She took a beautiful Dior gown and made it hers in a way that completely fit her. I thought she looked fantastic, great haircut, tattoo and all.

I don't remember Hudson's dress which means I probably found it boring.

Nicole Kidman had probably my favorite look next to Marion Cotillard (JPG trumps almost any designer). Kidman had the aura of a beautiful Hitchcock blond. Incredibly classic and beautiful (but she always looks close to perfection).

Another retro favorite was Penelope Cruz who pulled off something not many people can - feathers. She reminded me of Sophia Loren at her most beautiful.

I was appalled at Tilda Swinton's look. All was forgiven, however, when she gave the evening's best acceptance speech.

Marion Cotillard's acceptance was charmingly delightful as well. And she looked great.


Jennifer Gardner had my favorite gown of the evening, with Nicole Kidman my runner up. Penelope Cruz looked devine.


Daniel Day probably had Mrs. Lewis dress in that awful get-up as the only thing that could destract from his terrible tuxedo.


Jon Stewart was a riot. Right mix of writer's strike, political, and film humor. His stuff after the monologue was great, too. Giant Wii, Lawrence of Arabia on his iPhone, Montage of Binoculars and Periscopes. HaHaHa Ha Ha!


The show either moved along at a great clip, or we were having so much fun at Tom and Heidi's that it seemed to go so quickly.

LOL! The Oscar party I managed several years ago finally got some prime press coverage as one of the "big parties" of the evening. I guess there's a deficite of parties with no Vanity Fair party.

I was amazed that the reclusive Cormac McCarthy could be seen in the audience, but given this year of weirdness (seriously, NCFOM is his worst book -- as a fan, I can barely acknowledge its existence) I guess I should have been prepared. I think I'm a little resentful that people are discovering him via such a pale echo of what he can do. It's sour "I discovered that band when they were cool" talk I'm doing here. :)

I'm glad Marion won. I don't care for a lot of stuff Tilda is in, but I love her anyway. Loved the binocs/periscopes gag, and the waking from nightmares bit, too. Yes, and the wii play and Lawrence of Arabia on the stupid small video device (iPhone?) were fun. Pretty good show this year, but most of the dresses were same-y. Like, insert skinny person in shiny fabric here. Yawn. And Harrison Ford seemed like he was on serious old-guy meds and that made me sad.

Viggo's awkward moment came on the red carpet when the interviewer pointed out that his niece should NOT have seen his performance in "Eastern Promises." Yeah, no kidding. To her credit she said she'd "covered her eyes" during the questionable bits.

Final note: the eyeball commercial. Whoever thought that one up must be hurt badly, because I'm so deeply weirded out I'm thinking about payback. I don't know what I can do, but...I want payback.

Pretty good show. Moved along nicely. I thought Helen Mirren had the best look and the Day-Lewises the collective worst. Diablo Cody wins the "F*ck, I should have bought underwear," award.

I guess it's okay that "No County For Old Men" won. Of the four best picture nominees that I saw, all had some serious problems, so why not give the Coens the award for their body of work. My best picture of the year is still "Hairspray."

Nice couple of kids, neat story, etc., and maybe you love it in the context of the movie, but that winning song just about put me to sleep. Judging by the performances alone, I thought the "August Rush" song was going to win.

This was my kids' first Oscars. They enjoyed seeing Giselle, Jadis, the girl from Princess Diaries, etc. My son is still not entirely clear on the actor concept.

I've been rooting for Tilda Swinton since I first saw her in Orlando (wow, how long ago was that?).

Went to my friend's house, where I've watched the show for the last 15 or so years, people, food, etc. This year, what used to be fun, ended up being sitting in the back of a chatty room, watching a smallish tv with no sound system, listening to Rick wash dishes and run the garbage disposal during the show. I thought there were a lot of touching moments last night. Javier Bardiem's acceptance speech was great. The last part in Spanish was lovely. And at one point they panned to him in the audience and his mom was holding the Oscar. That's so cool. I'd never let my mother touch my Oscar. She'd steal it and have it baptized.

I loved Colin Ferrel's intro for the Once song, too. He seemed genuinely touched to be introducing the duo from his home country.

I loved Daniel Day-Lewis's fake coronation. What an amazingly cool moment.

I also thought the Harlem choir was just okay, but the 11 year old singer was wonderful. She could sing and had an amazing voice for her age.

Amy Adams's song was terrific. She held her own and didn't seem too nervous singing a song on her own with no one else on stage. I thought she was better than Chenowith.

This year, Juno and Ratatouille were the only two nominated films I've seen. That's abnormal. Ok, the reviewer in Variety who was at the Kodak said "That's How You Know" played wonderfully live. My sister, who attended the rehearsal, said it was terrific live, but - looking at the overhead screens - predicted it would be awful on TV. She was right. But I'm willing to give the bloated production number the benefit of the doubt, since it just may have somehow been fantastic in person.

I had a totally swanking good time at the home of the lovely LSPE and Tom. LSPE always makes me think "Lispy", which is ironic, as she's quite articulate.

Oh, this was the first time I'd seen the finalists for the Dove commercial.

T's was better than either of those. They were both good, but T's was better. Left me wondering if maybe hers was too good, that the judges favored ones that were good but still had an amateur feel to them.

I was disgusted, biased or not, T's commercial was leagues better than those.

I watched the version they showed on French TV last night. It was so completely ridiculous that basically everything is dubbed into French. Even the dialog in montages is dubbed. The funniest though was that the dubbed voices even read out the nominee names, but in a French accent.

Tragic actor Brad Renfro was snubbed at Sunday's Academy Awards when organizers left him out of a montage of stars who died in the past year. Renfro was found dead from a drug overdose in Los Angeles in January, aged just 25. But he was overlooked on a list of 98 movie industry people, that included everyone from actors and directors to public relations people. Might I add that I fit your side note to a T except that my clodhoppers are brown leather, not suede.
And I dont beleive my multi colored ribbon shoes go with as much as I think. :snap:
