so, I get home last night and found a stranger in my yard. now, for background, I live in the inner city. when I say inner city, I mean theres nothing but urbanica for as far as you could drive for a few hours. think central LA. yeah, like that.

so, now to the stranger. he seems peaceful enough, the dogs dont seem to mind him and I have no objections so long as he keeps up on the yard work, which he seems well determined to do.

so I figured he can stay.

but he needs a name.
ideas?

If coyotes found their way to Golden Gate Park I'm sure a rabbit can make it to the hood. Though that doesn't look like a domestic wild breed.

I'd not name it since that will just get you more attached and make it suck more when it suddenly disappears.

My dad's favorite rabbit name: Stu.

Which reminds me of this terrible, corny guy who used to do theater with me when I was a teen. After one long day set-painting, I commented that I was feeling hungry. "How about a nice big bowl of Stu?" he asked. I haven't been able to look at stew, or people named Stu, or rabbits with the potential to be named Stu or made into stew the same way ever again.

Much like, thanks to Jesse, I will never be able to look at corn dogs.

oh, Im betting I know right where he came from. a guy across and down the street a bit has a large pen in his front yard that at some point had a number of rabbits in it.

did I mention he also BBQ's a lot?

no way Im sending him back there. Id rather he vanish outright

besides, hes mowing the lawn that I loathe touching...so hes earning his keep.

Capt Jack

Rabbits don't drink a whole lot of water, they get most of it from their food. If you're watering things back there, should be fine.

Yeah, but come summer he'll need it for more than drinking. Rabbits overheat really easily. We used to take old 2-litre soda bottles full of water and freeze them to put in our rabbits' cages during the summer heat. When they were hot, they'd lay up against them to cool off.

No way to tell if it's a boy or a girl without grabbing it and knowing what you're looking for. Honestly, I don't even know what to look for. Pre-pubescent, looking won't even help. Not that it matters in your relationship to the rabbit, anyway.

His ears are awesome, almost like he's got leopard print there. And it looks like he's got that distinctive Rex (http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS236US236&q=rex+rabbit&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi) fur, which feels like satin and stays short.

I'd call him Lawnmower or Hedgeclipper or Weedwhacker. If you really want him to stick to your yard, buy some timothy pellets. Our rabbit goes nuts over them. Parsley or carrot tops would be good too, since they have important vitamins that he may not be getting out there, and he'll love them. Remember, the actual carrots are like candy, so only as a treat.

Enough nannying - enjoy your wild bunny. :)

Not Afraid
02-27-2008, 08:55 PM
Well, if he's going to be your lawn mower, call him John Deere (and if it's a girl, Johanna Deere).

I used to be able to sex a pre-pubescent rabbit, but I'm not sure I could do it at this point.

Fuzzy Balls, Spraying/marking = male. Getting pregnant = female. (duh)

I love Hopper - then you could do a French pronunciation and it would sound like au pair for added punnyness and future de-evolution to Punny Bunny and a rhythmic homage to Ian Fleming's Moneypenny of James Bond fame...

There's no need to name something that won't respond when you call it. That's why Todd's beloved ball python remains nameless though he's certainly part of our family by now.

Hmmm.....maybe your rabbit and Todd's ball can have play dates. What fun!

Then why do people name their cats? One of our cats (Rufio) LOVES to be outside (keeping him strictly indoors was never an option). At the end of the night, if he is not in, I go looking for him.

Not only does he respond when I call his name, he walks home with me. I do not need to pick him up or anything, he just scoots along side me as I walk home and in the door.

I love that cat!

True, but are showing disdain at their name, or the fact that the servants dare speak to them? It's important for their psyche for them to be able to distinguish when they are actively ignoring you from when they're just ignoring you by default.

Alex

My cat pays attention when talked to (and generally will come to you). I just hold no illusions that it really has any concept of "name." If coming to a specific noise is a sign of that then millions of cats think their name is "whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"

morning bunny hilarity:

let me preface this with:
Those dogs, as hard as they may try are never ever going to catch this rabbit. Its easily 5x smarter than the two of them combined.

that being said...as Im leaving for work this morning, I open the back door to let the two dufus dogs out for their usual morning ritual and Mr bunny is sitting outside the back door munching happily away. The dogs go into "chase ready mode" and are already banging their faces against the back screen to go meet our new resident.

Mr rabbit rather unenthusiastically heads off down one of his now plentiful trails, dogs in what I have to laughingly call "hot persuit". little dog loses sight of him almost immediately as he cant see over the top of the foot tall grass growing back there and wanders back completely satisfied that he's now saved the day from the lepus hoards. the older, taller dog is still hot on the trail. Mr bunny has long since vanished to my eyes and Ripley is off doing the doggie sherlock thing.

I drop Chewy (shorty) off at my resident dog sitters house and as Im leaving, I see Ripley still searching in and around the car the rabbit was last seen headed towards. Ripley goes one way around the car...sure enough, mr bunny pops out the other...dashes behind a tire and waits. this goes on for 5 or 10 min, with Ripley totally oblivious to Mr rabbits gamesmanship.

Finally, like the first one, Ripley saunters off satisfied shes saved the world from the invaders and heads inside for a well deserved nap.

Mr bunny hops back down his trail like he owns the place and goes back to happily munching away at the lawn looking at me as if to say "you didnt really think that'd work, did you?"

yeah...him I like. I feel like I have bugs bunny living at my house with my pair of 4 legged Elmer Fudds.

update:

yesterday, about noon, 3 little girls came knocking at my door.
"mister, have you seen our rabbit? he ran away and people say they see him, but we cant catch him"

sure enough. they described him to a tee, right down to the yellow ears and spots on his back.
I told them that hes still around and has been happily eating my grass for over a week. I also assured the one little girl that no, my dogs wouldnt eat him. theyre too old, slow and stupid to catch him. they were happy to hear that.

his name is Halo

I want a bunny!!!! Unfortunately, stray cats can't evade Karma (the smartest of my Danes). Our cat is fine, but strays take off running when Karma comes out and she goes into instinctive chase mode. Then she catches them, tosses them in the air, and then looks at them like, "hey, why'd you stop running?" as they lay dying. I make a lot of noise now before I let her out at night. :(

of course not. Im supposed to actually CATCH said speedy bunny, without hurting him and return him to them post haste.

they (all 3 of them, ranging from ages Im guessing 8 down to the 2 or 3 year old chatter box) checked back 4 times over the course of the day to see if

a) I had caught Halo-bunny ...no dear, not in the 20 min since you were here last
b) if they could pet the barking dogs they were so afraid would eat the bunny, but didnt really seem to phase them at all
c) to show me the flowers they'd 'found' growing next door (yes...his roses. the owner will not be thrilled at this)

I liked it better when the local kids thought of me as that crazy old guy who lives in the haunted house
