We had corned beef and cabbage last night- Tori had mac-n-cheese, of course.

There was a short story on NPR last Friday about an Irish immigrant that opened an Irish bakery in San Francisco a couple years ago. He said that until he came to America he'd never had corned beef and cabbage before and it came as a surprise to him that people apparently considered it a staple of his diet.

That the American idea of Irish culture seems to have been frozen into our national psyche about 100 years ago.

The pressure is such to provide "authentic" foods that this year he added corned beef and cabbage to the menu for the month and it has been hugely popular.

Not that this is any reason to not eat corned beef, I just found it amusing. An object lesson in how you get what most people think of as "Chinese food" or the Taco Bell line-up or people not believing Lani when she says that sushi isn't really eaten at home in Japan.

Ditto that, on knowing... An old co-worker from Ireland told me. But, it's basically the one time of the year where it's somehow acceptable that I go beyond rational cabbage eating limits and everyone else joins in, thus making the resulting gas 'OK'.

And seriously, if we're eating traditionally Irish, wouldn't we just be eating a lot of potatoes... or ??

What a crazy night at the pub. They told us that it might not be too busy, due to many people choosing to celebrate over the weekend. That assumption was incorrect. Sardines.

And all they wanted to hear was Irish music. Granted, we came pretty prepared but we figured they might also want to dance. Nope, just lots and lots of Irish music. Five and a half hours worth of it. By the end of the night, our singer's fake Irish accent had morphed into something that sounded like an Irish pirate but nobody seemed to notice - other than the drummer and I, who kept yelling "Argghhh" each time he sang. :)

And as is becoming the tradition around here (since I'm never home on St. Paddy's Day,) Matthew and I are having our corned beef and cabbage tonight. The nice thing is that you can purchase all the ingredients on the day after for mere pennies.

And as is becoming the tradition around here (since I'm never home on St. Paddy's Day,) Matthew and I are having our corned beef and cabbage tonight.One thing I am VERY happy about is that I no longer give up certain holidays every year. This year will be the first year in about 7 or 8 that I haven't worked on the Fourth of July and last December was the first time that I have not worked ANY Saturday in December in about 20 years.
