Well, we know the Capt loves cars (and others too).
I've voiced my desire for a MINI.
Here's a story to bring tears to the Capt's eyes.
LA man gets long-stolen Mustang back
Story Here (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080321/ap_on_fe_st/odd_mustang_reunion;_ylt=Aj78howZBEi1NvV69pd5_COs0 NUE)
"It's his car, even though he had it for four years and I had it for 38," Smongesky said. "He seems like a real nice gentleman, though."
Brakke found out Smongesky had twice rebuilt the engine and painted the Mustang from its old gold color to silver-blue.
"He wasn't too happy with that," Smongesky said.
The pair planned to meet up to transfer the car soon.
"It was hard but it was the right thing to do," Smongesky said. "I haven't really cried yet, but when he drives it away, I think I'll fall apart."

oh man. that would, to say the least, suck.
the woman: oh, Ive had this car for 40 years.
the police: its stolen, you have to give it back
the woman: screw you!
*pulls a Thelma and Louise and drives away*
I might be more inclined to try and buy it from the guy if I've had it that long
thanks Snowy. I think I'll go CarFax all my cars now

Recovered Mustang (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20080321-9999-1m21mustang.html)
its in my freakin' neighborhood! after seeing the pic I KNOW Ive seen this car around (I always notice oldies)
Is there any kind of statute of limitations on recovery of stolen property? She seems fine with the idea that he can have it back but if she wasn't and wanted to fight it is there recourse?
If it were another 40 years before she noticed would the original guy's estate own it? Does it matter if the original owner was compensated by his car insurance for the theft?

one would think so on all those counts

The article I read - which I can't find now. I think the statute was up. She was going to sell the car which is how she found out about it in the first place. I don't think she HAS to give it back she just is.

I thought this story sounded familiar. With a little digging, I was able to find a similar story (http://www.cbp.gov/xp/CustomsToday/2006/april/cbp_helps.xml) I read in 2006 about a stolen Corvette being recovered that had been stolen back in 1969

Well, I read the comments ... so I have to concur the original owner did a good thing ... but since the theft was discovered when the current owner tried to sell the car, it kinda detracts the total sweetness from her getting the car after all ... since she's likely not going to keep it.
I still want zapppop's dad's mustang. Grrrrr.

yeah, I know but at least the guy had the clusters to say 'uh..no thanks. you take it'.
I also like the nice symbolic 'a dollar and year and we'll call it good'. with luck he took that money and bought the two of 'em dinner.
(and if not, dont tell me. I like happy endings)

I still want zapppop's dad's mustang. Grrrrr. My mother's boyfriend (they've been together over 30 years) has a 1956 Corvette convertible (with a removable hardtop). It was in his garage, untouched, for about 25 years. About 2 years ago, he started restoring it. He has almost all original parts, especially the ones that matter (with serial numbers). He is the only owner.
Me wants (but will never get).

My best friends Dad had that exact car. He'd owned it in college and sold it one day, her mom was horrified and said it was the only reason she'd married him in the first place ;)
As an anniversary present one year he bought it back for her. Fast forward a few years and her younger brother got the car and totalled it in less than a month.
