On Thursday, March 20, 2008, Jay Leno welcomed as his guest on The Tonight Show the actor Ryan Phillippe, who, early in his career, played a gay character on the daily soap One Life to Live. During the interview, Leno hounded Phillippe, telling him to look into the camera, pretend it was his "gay lover…Billy Bob," who "has just ridden in shirtless from Wyoming" (still milking the Brokeback jokes), and give it his "gayest look."So I think I'll be sticking to Letterman and/or Stewart & Colbert for a while.

Even if I stayed up that late (old age sux), Leno is way too much of a right wing tool for me take seriously. Or un-seriously...

I will take Letterman or Colbert over the Chinned One any day.
And I would marry Jon Stewart if he let me.
And I was a woman.

On the other hand, I think it bespeaks ill of people when they can't take a joke at their own expense.

Not that I want gays to laugh at racial humor as well as gay jokes. But it doesn't seem so thin-skinned if we just let the gay jokes roll off our collective backs.

Ryan Phillipe showed up for Leno?

He totally snubbed Kevin and Bean on KROQ.

To Phillipe's credit (yes, I give him credit despite the fact that I loathe him) he does not do the gay look to the camera. Wow, I had no idea that Leno was such a fvckstick.

Wow, I was wondering what GC was gonna say about this. His most hated celebrity (Ryan P.) standing up against his most hated showbiz tactic (gay dissing).

To G.C.'s credit, he gave Phillippe credit.

That's ma boy!!

I also find it weird when late night hosts take pleasure in making their guests feel awkward. I mean, Phillipe (if he was smarter) should have been prepared for all sorts of shenanigans. But the interview did make Leno look bad. I mean, yeah, he was nude in a commercial. So what? That's called work. Phillipe should take a lesson from George Clooney and embrace his early work and laugh it off.

Following SM's link I found myself in all sorts of places. Jeff Whitty's website, youtube, all over. Jeff Whitty sounds like a cool guy. Good for him.

And, yes, there is that. I never found Leno to be funny. Letterman is often funny. John Stewart is funny. Stephen Colbert is funny. Leno? Not so much.

Sad. My late night talk show is Kimmel. Sure he's a jackhole, but at least he's honest about it. And he's surprisingly sensitive on occasion.

I saw a taping of Leno and enjoyed it. I'm sad to hear that he's got this lurking.

Just curious... Why does GC hate Ryan Phillipe?

Hmmm. Let me count the ways.

In my humble opinion, I think he's talentless. He only has a couple of facial expressions and he's boring to watch. Yes, he's gorgeous, but pretty does not mean talented. He cast in film after film and he's terrible! I hate it when directors/producers cast actors because of their looks expecting us to find their characters credible and likable just because they are pretty. Bleh. It's like all those talented people making music right now and all the focus lands on Justin Timberlake. How frustrating. There are other actors with depth who are ten times better than he is. I have not seen one of his films where I actually liked him. And he seems like a dunderhead in every interview I have seen him in. Listen to him talk and then listen to, oh say, Gyllenhaal talk. Big difference.

I know, this is sounding very close-minded and opinionated but it's just my thoughts on a dinglecheese actor.

Reese Witherspoon was right to leave him. Phillipe's film may have won the Best Picture Oscar but the Brokeback guy got his woman.
:D

Kinda how I feel about Leonardo DiCaprio - except I do not find him the least bit attractive.

Well, i have zero idea how Phillippe comes off in interviews or on talk shows or at a party. I don't know the man and have no interest in his life or in hearing him promote his projects. But I have seen a good sampling of his films.

Yeah, he's a pretty face, and often dull in many movies. But I don't think he's talentless. IMO, he was good in Breach and Flags of Our Fathers, which are his last two major films prior to the one just out, Stop Loss, which I have heard good things about.

So maybe he's getting better with experience.

Guess he just rubs Gemini Cricket the wrong way. Pretty boys sometimes do that to me, too (but in my case, it's usually just envy).

Leonardo DiCaprio is often craptastic, but also has some good performances under his belt. I don't think it's right to dismiss some of these people simply because they are not good in everything or, more likely, because one feels their fame is undeserving and based more on teen-fan sex appeal than talent.

Yeah... I think one of the things that makes me dislike him is that so many people consider him to be a sex symbol when, to me, he looks all of 12. <Blech>

That, and that I don't think he can act his way out of a cardboard box.

Movies I thought DiCaprio was good in:

Blood Diamond, The Departed, The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can, Romeo + Juliet ... and What's Eating Gilbert Grape?

Hmmm, mostly his most current. Which suggests, to me at least, that he's also getting better with experience.

Yes, he looks like he's 12. Sometimes I find him attractive, oftentimes not. But I won't look at pictures of him in a library, that's for sure. ;)
