Chemist Albert Hofmann inadvertently experiences the world's first acid trip when a tiny quantity of lysergic acid diethylamide accidently seeps through the skin of his finger. After leaving work early, he went home and settled into "a not unpleasant intoxicated condition." Then he had solid two hours of visual hallucinations: "I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors." It will be another three days before Hofmann gets up the courage to swallow 250 micrograms and ride his bicycle home.

So, what are you doing to celebrate? :)

I think by the time I was old enough to do it, it had been diluted a great deal from it's original potency. I never really hallucinated, but it felt a lot like 'shrooms- speedy, sort of spacy and everything was brighter, funnier and more amazing than when sober. I'm glad I never had a bad trip, but I know others who did.

I love it because it was not only recreationally fun, but psychenautically psychoactive, human improvement resulting, and issue resolution compelling.

Ah, le sigh. Le Sigh, Darling.

I never did enough of shrooms or acid to get the halucinatory effects. And I was usually stoned on pot so I didn't know the difference, with the exception of the best, most fun high was when I shared half a hit of dragon paper acid and a joint with my bro in law and we laughed our acids off for an hour. :D

It's such a great story though. Better than fiction. My youth was boring in comparison.

Sigh, with only a week until Coachella, my hopes of enjoying Dark Side of the Moon live in properly altered state are diminishing.

I wound up at an IHOP with a bunch of Hells Angels, then I woke up in a park with an evangelist screaming at me through a bullhorn. Thankfully, I was fully clothed, and my bike was safe.

Hmmm, the confluence of these stories reminds me somehow of the time I took off all my clothes at a Pink Floyd concert.

But that was on mushrooms! I never behaved so scandilously on acid!!

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who thought that!

I never tried the stuff, I think my brother did enough for both of us:evil:

Once in college. I didn't feel a thing and then suddenly I felt everything, and it all felt so good. The air was a soft, sexy material stroking my skin. I was in love with everyone and everything. Then the colors intensified and changed. Very pretty. Then everything inanimate was breathing. It was entirely pleasant until I looked in the mirror. I saw an ugly monstrous version of myself looking back at me. Every flaw was exaggerated. I wanted to wash my face. I remember that most vividly. I was gripped with intense disappointed and I wanted to scrub my face raw. Suddenly, I thought about an old D.A.R.E. story about a girl who dropped acid and peeled off all of her skin thinking she was an orange. Well, I didn't want to be that girl. I got a grip on myself. "It's the drugs," I said aloud and left the bathroom. Found a friend who said, "You looked in the mirror?! Don't ever do that when you're on acid."

Would have helped to know that sooner.

Anyhoo, after about 4 hours I was getting pretty bored and tired. I had to travel to my aunt's place for Thanksgiving the next day. So even though that crap is supposed to keep you up for a long time, I crawled into bed and fell asleep. Mind over drug, mind over drug, mind over drug. Or maybe I just hallucinated that I slept. Heh.

My dad participated in one of Leary's experiments at Harvard. He was in the control group. The "didn't take any acid" group. Heh.

Hahaha, that's like Rule No. 3 or possibly 2.

Ah I pity the odd young person who will come across LSD with no mentor class to guide them.

Eh, I never had a problem with the mirror thing, beyond just losing a lot of time there.

On my first trip I ended up lying under a desk with a pair of headphones playing Dark Side. It felt like I was down there forever...and then the bells went off and I realized it had been just the first track.

Yes, the Caveat to Rule No. 2 or 3 is that, for those with the gene that prevents them from freaking out at the mirror reflection of themselves, they will still lose lots of time just lost in it. So even though 17.6% of trippers have that gene, it's still routinely dispensed advice to newbies as a general guideline.

The mirror was scary in a thrilling sort of way. I had a little revelation there too, about looking like my mother. Mostly, it was a REAL funhouse mirror.

Hmm, what other "rules" are there? Don't do it alone, don't go swimming....

One of first experiences involved my friend and I getting "kidnapped" by Adam, the guy who sold the stuff to us, sitting in Adam's car as he did donuts on the ice in a parking lot of a St Louis radio station, staring into the bathroom mirror at said station while they played with sound effects, being dragged back to his apartment where his girlfriend had just slashed her wrists (not fatally) while listening to Leonard Cohen... and on... and on...

good times.

Wow. I had no idea there were so many rules, regulations and warnings. I'm one of those "boring" people here. I've never even been stoned. (Not so much a moral/ethical choice, more an issue of cowardice.) LSD is one of the only drugs I've ever been at all tempted by, and ONLY because I want to see the pretty colors. (See my recent entry on the "favorite moments in animation" thread. I like surreal.) But the posts here make it clear that there are potential minefields, so my non-usage is certain to continue. Guess I'll have to stick to watching Fantasia rather than participating in it. Very interesting read, this thread.

Hahaha, that's like Rule No. 3 or possibly 2.

Ah I pity the odd young person who will come across LSD with no mentor class to guide them.

:(So, I am interested in what some of the rules are. I believe that one of them is to make sure you have someone with you who isn't dropping as a baby-sitter (or whatever you call that person). I don't know if that is just for your first time or every time.

What other guidelines are there? Just curious.

I don't know if that is just for your first time or every time.Psh, who wants to be that person? I'd say you don't need a sober person, as long as you have a responsible experienced person. Larger groups are better because you never know who will flip out and who will stay steady. I'd also recommend doing it somewhere you are really comfortable (at home) for the first time, and reserving outdoor, public experiences for when you know what you're getting into.

But......wait for it............

........they're more guidelines than actual rules.
