View Full Version : LoT Art Show
In honor of Earth Day, make art. Your inspiration is anything to do with Earth.
Meet me back here by April 29 - that's one week's time. Post a photo of your artwork any time until then.
If anyone wants to donate prizes, PM me. If we get prizes, then we can decide on our favorites by a poll.

Can it be photography?

Yikes! A week to make art about the earth. I'll be running back and forth across town for materials, burning the midnight oil and staring endlessly at the open fridge for inspiration.
(That was my entry.)

Ooh fun!
It can be anything. But if you're artificially inseminating yourself, get going now.

I don't think this can qualify as an actual entry, because 1) - I did these pictures last year, and 2) - they aren't particularly earth-themed, apart from the subjects being animals. (And the second picture isn't even a depiction of a real animal, it's a picture of a famous mechanical animal stand-in.) But, this is as good an excuse as any to post them anyway.
First up, Portrait of Illuminati, in charcoal:

And next, Portrait of Bruce, also in charcoal:

I haven't finished it yet, but would my model of an Enzo Ferrari qualify?

Oddly, I worked on two canvases, with two more on the way - unintentionally, they have an elemental/earth/natural theme... I will take some pics and upload them of the two I finished this weekend, and when the others come, I will upload the entire thing... probably by next weekend.
I'm glad this got bumped, and who tapped into my subconscious?

Yes, can we use something we didn't create specifically for this?
In looking over my OP, I see I wasn't clear. The intent was to create in the space of this one week.
However, if you want to post your artwork hors compétition, just for our enjoyment, please do!

What talent, my dears! We still have a few spots open in the gallery, if anyone else would like to post.

Probably lazy of me, but my Coachella pics include some earthy elements. When we finally get those up...

I've got a piece specifically created for this project, but it's not quite finished yet. I'll get there soon.

Bummer. I didn't realize it had to be created for this project.

Well, these two photos which I took in 2007 are kind of Earth-related. They were previously posted here at LoT last year, but appropriate to the theme of being in awe by Earth's natural beauty.
This is one of the panoramic views from the Acoma Pueblo "Sky City" near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Indians have been living atop this 367-foot-high sandstone mesa (where I'm standing to take this photo) since the early ninth century, A.D. Built here for its strategic position, Acoma Pueblo may be the oldest continuously-inhabited village in the United States.

Well, I don't know that it really qualifies as "art" or even earth related. But over the recent months I have really found myself focused on suburban wildlife, and watching its change through spring into summer. And also watching as our local development (and sudden stall in development) are impacting it. The intersection of people and animals that semi-thrive among us is an area of "wildlife photography" that appeals to me.
So here's one of the photos that has resulted. A burrowing owl who lives within feet of a major road that I walk along in the morning on the way to the BART station (many of you will already have seen these and others on my LJ):

I also like this ground squirrel that lives in a burrow just a few feet away from the owl. I had to frame it with the squirell about 15% to the right of where I'd prefer but that was out of my control because of a post that would enter the frame inelegantly):

Great shots, Alex, especially since animals are difficult to photograph. I really like your theme of suburban wildlife, too, as a sign of modern times.
