It's weird, though. I have almost all of the (past and present) Cemetery Screening movies on DVD. I think my decision to see a movie has to be based on the kind of crowd that the movie will attract.

The only crowd I will avoid at the cemetery is the horror movie crowd. They absolutely RUINED a screening of The Haunting.

But I've never had a bad crowd experience with any other film (though I have heard of other bad experiences from others. I guess I would avoid any film that encourages (even more) drunken shenanigans at the cemetery.)

Late hour and I'm still undecided. I even bowed out of other fun plans because of the cemetery.

But I have a bad feeling about it.


At a time when zapppop and i are going thru the greatest crisis in our relationship since breaking up (for reals) ... we are still going to try to work things out so we can remain friends, and would be completely comfortable, civil and sociable with each other at the cemetery tonight.

So the thought of our extended LoT group perhaps having to remain in separate camps, divided because of others in similar straights who, i get a feeling, can't say the same ... fills me with a sadness that I don't necessarily want to face.

Cemetery was fun - getting there another story, though by the end I was laughing hysterically over the absurdity of the whole situation. Here's a pic of a car that made a U-turn on Santa Monica to try to cut in front of us. Need-less to say, with Lisa Driving, they did not succeed.

I was in full punk rock driver mode by the time we got through the gates. Then the parking attendant was an idiot. Instead of making people pull into the straight line of parking starting with the end of the line he was having people pull in and back up. It was taking For EVER to get cars in line. I just pulled up to the front and parked, the cars behind me did likewise. The attendant said "everyone's backing up" I replied, (disdainfully) I know, but this is much easier.

Don't mess with me in that mode. ;)

HAHAHA! You all missed out! Sorry to gloat. Not anyone's fault if they don't love this FANTASTIC movie that is Spielberg's Masterpiece, but there's just no accounting for taste.

Fortunately, there are TONS of Big Fans ... and they all showed up at the Cemetery last night. It was seriously the best screening of Close Encounters since 1977.

It was also the first time I've seen the 1977 version projected for an audience since the intial run of that movie just about 30 years ago. So freaktastingly excellent.

For the second time in a week, a movie exhibitor touted their special sound system (they also did it at the El Cap on Thursday for Sleeping Beauty), and indeed a special sonic set-up was done for the cemetery screening of CE3K.

They announced that Close Encounters is the loudest movie ever made (by decibel measure), and the sound was the best the cemetery has ever had.

The UFOs all had this great thrum that had such presence, and the Mothership had an astounding bass rumbling that literally shook the ground. It was the same effect as in the original theatrical run, but was far more effective outdoors than inside a theater. So even though we could see only four or five stars, this effect which dominated the finale of the movie made it the unique outdoor experience I was hoping for.


The other great sensurround elements were LIVE HELICOPTERS during Two, count-'em, TWO helicopter shots in the film. Hahahaha, Hysterical.

Um, no helicopters overhead for the entirety of the movie, btw ... just during these two shots when there were helicopters chasing our heros up the slopes of Devil's Tower. Better cooperation from the outdoor universe could not have been asked for.


And I could not have asked for a better cemetery audience. I haven't experienced this level of crowd reaction to the film since it premiered in 1977. And the 1977 version of the film seen by a large audience for the first time in 30 years made for an amazing event.


I never managed to hook up with alphabassetgrrl. And I'm so sorry more of you weren't able to attend. It was my Favorite Cemetery Screening EVER.

Yeah, sorry we couldn't get together last night. I did enjoy the movie, though! We noticed and were amused by the live helicopters at just the right time, too. :)

This was my first cemetary screening, and I couldn't have asked for a better night. Well, the driving and parking thing could have been better, but we didn't know any better. I need to work out timetables for taking the Red line from Universal and either biking or walking in. It's only about a mile or so from the station to the cemetary, and then we'd avoid all the car nastiness involved with having only one entrance and a gajillion people.

Ok everybody ... last chance. This Saturday is the last cemetery screening of the season ... and as usual, they conclude with a horror classic ... this time it's ALIEN.


Yes, that movie is 30 years old. That's classic now. (Most of the old-time studio classics I grew up on were, omg, usually around 30 years old at that time.)


Anyway, we haven't been to the cemetery as a group nearly enough this season (um ... ONCE).
