Late Thursday afternoon Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared the Santa Cruz Mountain fire zone a state of emergency.
The wildfire has burned at least 3,200 acres near Mount Madonna County Park about 10 miles west of Gilroy as of 6 p.m. Thursday. That is an area that covers 4.6 square miles. Authorities said early Thursday evening that the fire was 15 percent contained. That was the first containment report of the day.
