View Full Version : Castle Walkthrough Reopening

A few months ago Al Lutz mentioned on MiceAge that the folks in TDA were looking into reopening the Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough later this year.

Recently a construction wall went up around the exit to the walkthrough.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v686/zapppop/walkthru.jpg

Though imagineers have been seen going in & out, they haven't said what they were doing. However, the construction workers (when asked by park guests) claim they are restoring the Sleeping Beauty walkthrough & hope to complete construction by the end of the year.

This would tie in with the upcoming 2 disc platinum edition (http://www.amazon.com/Sleeping-Beauty-Two-Disc-Platinum-Costa/dp/B0013ND30M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1212964106&sr=1-1) & blu-ray (http://www.amazon.com/Sleeping-Beauty-Two-Disc-Platinum-Blu-ray/dp/B0013ND30W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1212963999&sr=8-3) release of Sleeping Beauty in October,
as well as the film's upcoming 50th anniversary in January '09.

Cross your fingers everybody!

There is a LOT of 'recovery' work to be done, I've seen photos of the damage to the interior glass in the walk thru that would break your heart. The destruction is just heart wrenching :( but I'd love it if they are in fact going in and refurbing it and while I doubt it would be HCA accessible I don't think Disney is required to make it so since they aren't changing the structure just the dioramas.

MouseWife

~MS~ Why was it damaged?

CoasterMatt
06-08-2008, 06:19 PM
They tore the stuff out for the "Greatest Hits" diorama series at the Emporium

MouseWife
06-08-2008, 06:43 PM
*aghast* Seriously? So, they must have thought they'd never put it back together? Do you think they used the 9/11 worries to save money on their diorama?

And to break the glass???? That was unnecessary.

Thanks for the info, Matt. :snap:

~MS~ Why was it damaged?

Al reports that a lot of the damage was done in order to install the firework stuff and lighting for the 50th show.

MouseWife

Between the fireworks and the emporium, they really ransacked the walk thru. :(

~MS~
06-08-2008, 09:13 PM
Pretty much, the photos I saw were zappop level worthy of not public access and the windows were just smashed like a vandal had been in there! I know they were actual pictures not 'mock up' or faked ones .... and while part of it was for all the reasons stated, some of it was just construction people 'having 'fun' ...color me not impressed.

MouseWife
06-08-2008, 09:22 PM
~MS~ that is shameful. Can you imagine if they'd had some of us there? Some of us whose hearts are a part of that place? Shame on them.

Or...

Well, walls can be patched, and glass replaced. Yes it will bring the price up, and hopefully the can do something about the vandalism. At any rate, it will be nice to have yet another attraction opened. The more they open and give people things to do, the smaller the lines will be.

I would rather see a digital projection of the glow going up the stairs.
But the two are similar in that it will be nice to see a long missing attraction back, but visiting it repeatedly is not a high priority.

And while I'm thinking about it...
Maleficent is a mean, vindictive, sadistic mega-evil bitch.
She curses an infant for pretty much no reason, she conks out grown up Aurora, she imprisons Phillip, then after she wins she taunts him in prison by saying 'you're going to be here until you're too old to be with Aurora' and then she turns into a dragon and tries to murder Phillip. And she basically gains nothing by doing all this. Pure evil. Talk about someone too dangerous to keep alive in some prison somewhere.
:D

And another thing, most of the characters in this film do not cast shadows. I found it odd that they missed that. Then again, I haven't really looked at the other films before it for that...

He did die. That was his death. Disney put him in the sequels so the original film would be more 'family friendly'. Eesh. Next thing you know they'll do a voiceover of Bambi's father saying " Your mother is injured "

So yeah, Lucifer died. Disney pulled a George Lucas*

*= in Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker was murdered by Darth Vader. In the sequel that followed (almost 4 years later) Darth Vader claims that HE his Anakin Skywalker, which was not true. Star Wars was written as one single story with no sequel.

"What a build up!"

"What they can't do these days..."

"That's just the trouble with the world today..."

"No tricks now..."

"Say, that's pretty swell. Thanks, gee!"

"Not bad, says I."

"All right, son. Take it easy."

"What does an actor want with a conscience anyway?"

DISNEYLAND PREPARES TO OPEN SLEEPING BEAUTY CASTLE WALKTHROUGH
July 17, 2008 - Anaheim, CA - The interior of Sleeping Beauty Castle at
Disneyland will open in time for the December holiday season, offering guests a
“reawakened” version of its classic walkthrough presentation kissed with
vibrant scenes of Aurora, her charming prince, the evil Maleficent and other
characters from the beloved fairy tale film.

“It is fitting that we are announcing the return of a classic on the 53rd
anniversary of Disneyland,” said Tony Baxter, Senior Vice President of Creative
Development for Walt Disney Imagineering, who unveiled a model of the castle on
July 17, the birthday of Disneyland park.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty,” and
the excitement generated by the anniversary of the motion picture spurred
interest in the return of the Disneyland attraction.

Also celebrating the milestone 50th Anniversary of “Sleeping Beauty” is Walt
Disney Studios Home Entertainment, which will release a two-disc Platinum
Blu-ray™ Hi-Def disc, making “Sleeping Beauty” the first Walt Disney animated
classic title to be released in high definition, as well as on two-disc
Platinum DVD. A bonus feature on the new release will be “The Original Sleeping
Beauty Walk-Through Attraction With Walt Disney Imagineering,” an immersive
experience recreating the original castle walkthrough.

On April 29, 1957, nearly two years before the premiere of Walt Disney’s
animated feature “Sleeping Beauty,” the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough
opened with an in-park ceremony featuring Walt Disney and actress Shirley
Temple who, some 20 years earlier, had presented Disney with his special
Academy Award – one Oscar and seven little ones – for “Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs.”

The crafting of the 1957 walkthrough show fell to Walt Disney Imagineer Ken
Anderson and animation art director and color stylist Eyvind Earle, credited
with giving the motion picture “Sleeping Beauty” the distinctive and colorful
look of storybook illustrations in medieval style. An entirely new look
appeared in 1977 when the attraction’s redesign featured miniature dioramas,
including moving figurines similar to the window displays in the shops on Main
Street, U.S.A.

When the attraction is unveiled later this year, the “show” will differ from
the dioramas of the 1980s and ‘90s, returning to the unique style of the
original 1957 show and motion picture. Enhanced with new scenes and special
effects magic, the re-Imagineered attraction will employ technology not
available in the 1950s to represent scenes from the story of Sleeping Beauty,
including the magic of good fairies Flora, Fauna and Merryweather, and the more
sinister spells of the evil Maleficent.

For the first time, guests who are unable to climb stairs or navigate the
passageways of the Castle will be able to experience the walkthrough
“virtually” in a special room on the ground floor of the Castle.

Some of the new scenes were based on never-before-seen artwork by Eyvind Earle for scenes that didn't make it into the movie. When Tony Baxter was asked if there would be any scenes that feature Aurora's childhood years w/ the three goodfairies, he refused to comment.

Like the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough will feature a video presentation for those who cannot climb the staircases inside the castle. The former crystal shop located inside the castle is being converted into a video presentation room.

BTW: If you haven't already done so, purchase this new release of Sleeping Beauty. The film has been rematted to it's full 2.55:1 aspect ratio (previous releases were matted @ 2.35:1). The original audio mix (recorded in Germany) has also been restored. The film sounds & looks better than ever!

Thanks Issac!

I did get the DVD, but I'm going to wait to see it on my new HD LCD TV and Blueray. But I did watch the castle walkthrough segment. There will be a few things missing from the original, though they were short lived anyway (Goon eyes, and add-a-snore) and something is being added that was never in the original version (though I can't remember what it is at the moment). Also, one thing that was short lived in the original will now be brought back (in spoiler in case you want to be surprised).

Malificent's shadow at the exit

The original one was so much better than the Main Street window version. I'm looking forward to it.

As soon as I get a second to breathe, I'll be buying both the DVD (to watch now) and the Blu-Ray (to watch someday when I have the equipment).

As for the December 12th opening, I smell meat ...er, meet!

But as for those screen caps ... well, one of the things I always judge a Sleeping Beauty restoration on is that shot with King Hubert sitting forlornly on the castle steps after Prince Phillip has told him he won't be marrying Princess Aurora. In many versions, the steps are gloriously multicolor ... and indeed this very new restoration many of us saw at the El Cap a few weeks ago had the steps in muted, but acceptably multi-color hues. Yet in the screen cap of the supposedly same restoration, the steps are all in similar hues of red. I call shenanigans!!!! What's up with that???

It's possible in previous versions the colors were oversaturated & when they restored it the last time, they accidentally made all the steps similar shades of pink to make them match. I took that particular screen cap cause I knew it would get your attention ;).

Um, as for a meet, let's wait til the week after to make sure the walkthrough has officially reopened. It could be part of our annual Christmas swanking. Saturday December 20th sound doable ?

Ha, if only. So Isaac, why does your purposely included (thanks) screen cap show the steps in similar shades of pink when the restoration I saw at the El Cap had the multi-color steps I love (albeit much more muted than in previous versions.)

The steps is what, fairly or unfairly, I judge the restorations on. Because it's my theory that restorers simply make up the colors as they go along ... wish really, really, seriously bothers me since color styling was something vital to Disney animation and was carefully considered, designed and executed by the artists.

The same character in the same costume might have 20 different sets of color stylings, for how they would look under different lighting conditions.

Oi.

If the restorers are simply making up the colors, it is NOT a restoration.

Is there any way at this point to know what is correct? If any original prints still exist, their color accuracy is not reliable. Unless somebody documented what the original colors where in every sequence using some numeric valuation*, I don't know if we will ever know what the original colors where.

* In the printing industry we use the Pantone Matching System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantone) (with the unfortunate acronym of PMS), but I know that this PMS system was not in place when Sleeping Beauty was made.

And Kevy's right, there's no way to tell what the correct colors are unless they adhere to the archive records. For all I know the correct colors for the stairs are shades of purple and pink.

I'm simply wondering why the purportedly same restoration looked different in the theater than it does on that screen cap supposedly from the DVD release.

I'm simply wondering why the purportedly same restoration looked different in the theater than it does on that screen cap supposedly from the DVD release. One cannot accurately compare the colors between what is on the screen (I am not sure if you saw a digital or film presentation) and what is on you computer screen.

And I can almost guarantee that what is on you computer screen looks different on my computer screen and on what is on Isaacs and what is on anybody else's screen.

Lastly, projected light (computer screen) will look different than reflected light (movie theatre screen).

Basically, you're f*cked...

Could have something to do with the process of transfering the movie from film to DVD. Could be the particular film print. Could be the type of film. Could be the computer monitor. Hell, the colors looked different on my living room TV from the screen caps I posted from my computer. There's different potential factors. I'm sure if you look at other parts of the film, they'll look different from what you saw @ the El Cap. Take a look at the rest of the DVD images and use those to decide if you approve of the restoration. Just my 2 cents.

It is so easy to color correct something at several stages in a transfer. There could be color correction going on in telecine, during digitizing, etc. When I was transferring films at a previous job, color became really subjective. Lots of times the production crew, director etc would sit in on the process so that the look they were going for was maintained. I could see how the color could change for Sleeping Beauty, I mean are the movie's filmmakers still around?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v686/zapppop/sbwidescreenvhs.jpg

The 1997 Widescreen VHS release was really good because there were no commercial before the movie, it was in letterbox format, it was fully restored, and it had bonus features after the film. One of those bonus features was an excerpt from The Mickey Mouse Club show, in which Helene Stanley shows the Mousketeers how she does the modeling for Sleeping Beauty. She lip synched to a demo version of Once Upon A Dream & danced w/ Mousketeer Bobby, while wearing a Briar Rose costume.

For some reason this clip still has not appeared on any of the DVD releases. I hope it does next time.

Aren't you mostly always in OC....since you live there?

Nope not me i'm going to my parents house to do some eating and much needed shopping. Besides it's raining outside. If it weren't and Matt was able to go with me that's different. Have fun everyone including Brad (sorry :( now i won't get a last hug). Gotta do the family thing. But then i'm free the whole rest of the season til Xmas. :)

Um, I don't think Brad will be there. If he were, I'd be leaving right now.

If I knew he was at the Park yesterday, I would have called in sick.

And I'm sick that I think it's gonna turn out I saw him for the last time at his going-away party and didn't know it.

:(

I am one sad cheese.

I don't want to overhype it, but the Sleeping Beauty Walk-Thru revival is completely RAD, totally charming, impressive, and happy-making.

Go.Now.

It closes at 7pm daily. Um, just as we arrived at the Park. Because it had opened a mere two hours earlier, they re-opened after fireworks tonight (whew!) and may do so thru Sunday, if there's "demand."

I walked through the old Walk-Thru about an hour before it closed for the past seven years, as part of a Mouse-Adventure quest that was really quite precient. The U.S. attacked Afghanistan that afternoon, the Walk-Thru was closed mid-game, and I was one of the last people to experience it by that happy happenstance.

Today's revival, so much improved from the "doll" version of the 80's, was a special delight for me.

And I trust it will delight all of you, too. :snap: :snap:

yes, well he lives way closer to the Park, so could have been posted his own line long before I stole it ... but from the looks of things, I'd say he and CP were having a go of it instead of the internet.

YAY! It is awesome! The old/new effects are beautiful. The hallways themselves are wonderfully themed. The windows include beautiful 2-D effects that will make me bite my tongue when dissing 2-D from today forward. The use of projection is amazing! The imagery just leaps out. I can't believe the difference between that and the "oh hey I'm watching a screen" look in the Nemo subs.

Absolutely wonderful and enjoyable. :)

I finally got the chance to get over there today to see it. I got to it at 7:30pm and they had just closed the entrance and was emptying it out for the fireworks. :(

FYI- it's closed 7:30-10:30 for the fireworks.

FYI- it's closed 7:30-10:30 for the fireworks.Guessing by the fact that you are posting at 9:10 that you did not stick around for the 10:30 reopening.

Or are you going back?

According to who seemed to be a very knowledgeable SBWT CM, tonight would be the last night the Walk-Thru will be open post-fireworks.

When we spoke with him on opening night, plans were to then close the attraction at 7pm nightly after Thanksgiving Weekend and not reopen.

Subject, of course, to change. And it seems guest demand has an effect on that decision. So who knows? I just don't want anyone to count on the attraction being re-opened after fireworks ... after tonight.

After we walked past some people confused about the mysterious door and stairs that was in front of them.

It's beautiful.
