Ever seen Citizen Kane?

Um, yeah, I have.

Hey - I read the book by Marion Davies entitled "The Times We Had". It's quite a good read, and includes a prelude by Orson Welles.

Not that it's revealed in the book, but I had no idea that Rosebud was a nickname. OMG - no wonder Hearst went ape $hit when the movie was released. Great film though - a total classic.

Love and hugs,

The Stoat XXX.

You know, provided there are no major reversals in November, I just thought of something else the Lashes could do while they're in California ;)

(No pressure, kids! Heheh)

And, then if they do, we can start hounding them about when they're going to have babies.

(Goodness knows Ken and I don't get that one enough... )

Wait, people went ahead with plans for Hearst for that weekend? Aww, I expressed interest in that super-early in the thread and figured the group would be making plans for that a little later. Shoot. Maybe Tom and I can get some accommodations nearby.

innerSpaceman

Could someone do some research on that? I'd like to nab somewhere in the area, either a share with some other Swankers, or a common hotel-like situation for that weekend.

I can do a little research later, maybe tomorrow.

thank you, too lazy to figure it out last night...but that is it, thanks!!!

Well, tracilicious, have you googled? :D

I googled pre-asking, but didn't find the Hearst site incredibly helpful. So I went with the lazy route and asked here. ;)

Any of the Cambria hotels on Moonstone beach will be a good choice. There are quite a few to choose from. If anyone would like me to scout out a specific hotel I would be happy to do so. I plan on heading in that direction (just for the day) within the next couple of weeks.

I've mentioned this place before. It has really good prices, it is right next door to a very nice BW Cavalier hotel. The BW has firerings but it is a bit more expensive than the Sands.

The Sands has nice rooms, the restaurant next door is pretty nice, too, and, a nice place to watch the sunset and we always go for a little run along the beach when visiting.

These are the most close to the Castle.

Check the website for the rates but call and see if you can get better, too. The BW sometimes says nothing is available because they want you to book two nights. I always call directly and just get one.

tracilicious~I wish I could pull the info out of my head....it keeps looping but just can't think of the names, dates, etc. But, it is fascinating.

Yes, by all means, spend your day scouting hotels, and tell us which in your opinion is the swankiest.

Ummm...I may have to fight with The Boy about this. He will think because we are at the coast we will need to go to the beach. Silly Boy.

Actually, if I tell him who I am looking for, he will be happy to help.

My favorite place is located near the hotels, on Moonstone Beach Dr (Moonstone Landing). I am just not sure when we will be going.

I am thinking that if they are going to be in any proximity to me and my sensitive nose, I would prefer that they had access to showers.

Oh, um, yes, the story is really magnificent about Randolph Hearst. A publishing magnet? {is that the word?}

I think you mean "Magnate", but hell lets kick "magnet" around anyways:

I hear he was bi-polar, but that Marion Davies was still drawn to him. Far from being poles apart, there was an attraction. Others say that he was a magnet for $hit.

Either way, Hearst Castle has to be experience to be believed. The orange blossoms in spring are heavenly, and the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean (aka The Big Wet Patch) and surrounding mountain peaks are awesome. I can't wait.

Love and hugs,

Thanks, Stoat! Yeah, I shouldn't post without making sure what I'm posting. Words float around my mind, not always in the proper form!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randolph_Hearst

This wiki entry gives a lot of info about Hearst, but, there really is so much history there. But, this is something.

I didn't click on the links, just read the main article. Maybe there is more within the article....

There are also a plethora of books on Hearst (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=william+randolph+hearst&x=11&y=16).

Stoat's previously mentioned Davies book, The Times We Had was based on tapes of interviews Davies gave in her home, much of it while in her cups. If you want to read an excellent, and I do mean excellent bio of Davies, Fred Lawrence Guiles' 1972 volume is one to read (http://www.amazon.com/Marion-Davies-Fred-Lawrence-Guiles/dp/0070251142/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213803277&sr=8-4).

<begin derail rant>
As much as I enjoy Citizen Kane (which started this derail) Davies was ill served by the film and the lore of the film. Welles later stated that Susan Alexander was not based on Davies, but that is not how Davies has been remembered generally. Pity, she was a fine comedienne and a decent dramatic actress. Happily, those opinions seem to be changing with a few films being shown in regular rotation and a good documentary (http://www.amazon.com/Captured-Film-Story-Marion-Davies/dp/B0000714B3/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1213803277&sr=8-2), too. <end derail rant>

LOL! Trivia question I was presented with:

What do you do with Vegemite?
Get a prescription to clear it up
Use it to oil door hinges, squeaky wheels etc
Eat it
Add it to coffee or tea

Hmmm, maybe I'll luck out and snag a campsite in the Valley during the Yosemite retreat ... and we could have a weenie roast and bizarre Aussie smores night there one night.

I could afford camping for a few nights! I would host the Aussie weenie roast in return for an invitation to Japan Night at the cabin!!

Nemo Subs scary needle mouth fish ride
Toy Story whosy limp wrist after pulling popper mania

I wouldn't know about that, Lashdear. But, I wonder about the Whoopi Goldberg movie....it was taken over by the Hollywood Screams {or something like that} and I haven't been back in a while.

I wanted to post this link:
