I was just reading at MP that it seems Arrow has gone off the air and is currently replced by a station that's calling itself "Jack" and playing random assortment of music.
I for one won't miss Arrow. I had all but stopped listening to it. Over the past few years, their definition of both the word "classic" and the word "rock" had become SERIOUSLY skewed. Nevermind that somehow they simultaneously expanded the genres they covered while seemingly shortening their play list. So not only were they playing crappier and crappier music, they were playing it more often!

I listened to Jack radio a bit today out of curiosity.
"Pour some sugar on me"
"I just wanna fly"
"Legs"
Yeah, that was enough for me. They may play "whatever they want" but what they want to play does not interest me in the slightest.
Well, you all may find some comfort in knowing that Arrow 93 is in Heaven now ... and, uh, ... Yeh.
(Yawn.)
So how is everybody doing to-night?
Good?
Another Friday night out on the town, perhaps?
Good times?
Huh?
Well, that sounds fantastic!
(Yawn.)
Whelp, I am getting tired.
Hmmm?
You know, sleepy-like. Restful. It's time to hit the hay and then, I don't know, I guess I'll go to bed. Sorry to hear about Arrow 93. I've got about thirty of their bumper stickers plastered on my car, i don't know what I am going to do now. I feel dumb. I just put them all on yesterday, too. That's bad timing! I need to find a new favorite station that has some cool bumper stickers and quick.
Anyway, here I am rattling on and I need to get to bed! My sweet precious bed.

:( I had them programmed for whenever we traveled south of the Grapevine. It was nice because we have a station here that is also at 93.1, so I never had to change the radio, it would just change somewhere before Piramid Lake.

I went & checked it out. Can't believe it's gone & can't believe the new station is SO bad. They played Journey then an REO Speedwagon song. Sad.

Hmmm...We have a station here that has taken to calling itself 'Bob' within the last few days, and it's playing the same sort of 'classic' bilge. I suspect that it's all part of the same pre-recorded, corporate crap that is starting to take over the airwaves. I think we now have only two FM stations* that are live broadcasts, and one of them is only live part of the time. (For their morning show- the rest of the day is pre-recorded).
(*These are rock formatted shows- I wouldn't know about country or easy listening, as I try to deny their existence anyway.)

Which is why I'm getting satellite radio.

It's why I make my own mix CDs.
And listen to Indie 103.1.
Sadly, there really isn't a really good classic rock station, aside from my iPod.
KCRW is also good.
But not for classic rock.

There's an article in today's L.A. Times that confirms Arrow's been replaced by Jack.
The new station's motto is "We play what we want, and don't tell us what to play," and it made a point of saying it doesn't take listener requests.
Arrow was always my last resort if I was sick of CDs and NPR was having another pledge drive. I knew I was never going to hear Madonna if I was listening to them.
I still have my Working Stiff award (Major Stiffy) from Uncle Joe Benson sitting on my desk at work.

Journey, REO, Boston, Steppenwolf. Not to mension The Cure. The freaking Cure. Not that I don't love the Cure, but it is neither classic nor rock! I mean, they used to play those kinds of bands occasionally, in between the Zep, Floyd, Beattles, and Hendrix. But by the end, there was a better chance of hearing "Just like a white winged dove" than actual rock on Arrow at any point. I haven't listened to them in about a year, I think. Good riddance.
The new station is a standard in-between solution. They make themselves sound cool and edgy by saying, "We play whatever we want" when all they are really doing is playing a huge variety and seeing how many emails they get about each genre. Once they figure out who's listening, they'll zero in on that. I'm impressed that 103.1 broke that mold, but that's the rare exception. I have no high hopes about this one. Plus, even if they do break the mold and keep playing "what they want", I quite dislike what they've been playing, so I'm clearly not their audience.

I bet you're right. I was listening to it a few times this week, mainly b/c it's usually playing music while the other stations are on commercial breaks, and noticed that they're telling people, "We're playing what we want, and you can't do anything about it!" Then after the next song, they ask for people to call in and let them know what they think.
Sounds to me like Jack has some issues. Either that or he don't know Jack. :snap:

The switch was made at 5:00 pm Thursday. I only know this because we were listing to KROQ at about 4:30 and Jed mentioned that something weird was going on at 93.1. Naturally, I switched stations to check it out. For the last 20-25 minutes, they were playing nothing but these odd random sound bites (from movies, radio, songs, comedy bits, etc.). Quiet bizarre. Then at 5:00 they launched "Jack" and played Devo's "Whip It."
I listened for a few minutes and then turned Jack Off.
BTW: for a good dose of actual classic rock (with some new stuff mixed in), KLOS does an excellent job. While they are an ABC/Disney (read: corporate) station, they are very much not programmed that way. Rita Wilde has been doing an excellent job running the place and the selection of music the last year or so has been supreme.

Why did they name a bad station after my Big Orange Boy?
I didn't even know Arrow 93 was sick ...

I didn't even know Arrow 93 was sick ...It's been on a feeding tube for years. Bob Dylan wanted to remove it, claiming the station had expressed the desire to be terminated if it was ever in a state with more than one Stevie Nicks song in a day. However, the creators of the station sought and received an injunction, claiming that the station was still functioning, and that advances in the music industry would soon lead to new definitions of "classic" and "rock" that could restore the station's quality. It's been ugly.
