Before Jet-setting: a little good advice for those of us who (to quote Woody Allen) do not tan but "stroke"

The five best--and worst--sunscreens

Four out of five name brand sunscreens offer inadequate protection, according to the Environmental Working Group's second annual sunscreen report, which was launched last year to fill a gap in federal quality and safety standards for sun protection products.

Leading brands were the worst offenders.

"None of the market leader Coppertone's 41 sunscreen products met EWG's criteria for safety and effectiveness, and only one of 103 products from Banana Boat and Neutrogena, the second-and third-largest manufacturers, are recommended by EWG,"

Here are the EWG's five most effective and safest sunscreens:

1. Keys Soap Solar Rx Therapeutic Sunblock
2. Trukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum
3. California Baby Sunblock Stick No Fragrance
4. Badger Sunscreen
5. Marie Veronique Skin Therapy Sun Serum

And the bottom five:

1. Coppertone Lotion Sunscreen
2. Zia Natural Skincare Daily Moisture Screen
3. Formula 405 Aha Day Face Cream
4. Gillette Complete Skincare Facial Moisturizer
5. Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Time Complex Moisture Cream
